I'm sorry for any offence I caused with this video - it was only intended for people who are interested in the British accent (modern RP). I'm not trying to say that Indian English is 'wrong' or you have to change your accent. Indian English is a commonly recognised standard of English, and I even like the way Shraddha speaks :-)

I remember my mom was teaching this British boy how to pronounce the 'p' sound in Arabic (for those curious; he wanted to read the Quran) , and it took him months, and still he couldn't pronounce the sound plainly without the 'h' element. But you definitely did a fantastic job, kudos!!
@fbcork2003 Жыл бұрын
There is no letter P in Arabic (this is why most Arabs will say things like Bebsi and Baris instead of Pepsi and Paris! The Qur'an which is in Arabic does NOT contain the 'p' sound that you mention. There is a 'b' sound - it is the second letter in the Arabic alphabet. Maybe you're referring to Urdu?

It’s a mistake if I call Malvika as Malbhika. Because in some Indian languages V is pronounced “Bh”. So same with English. Any language spoken by its native speakers is considered as “correct” otherwise it’s mistake.
@Trollcat694203 жыл бұрын
It definitely is a mistake because most Indians can't even pronounce English sounds such as 'th', 'v','f' correctly. It's not that they can't, it's just that many don't want to learn. You will definitely sound incorrect if you pronounce tee'th' as tee't'. Learning to pronounce consonants will definitely not change your accent that much.

In India we learn English primarily to be able to communicate with people from other states considering the fact that we have 29 states and 22 languages. Speaking English in a British accent would merely result in a majority of people not being able to comprehend my speech thus defeating my purpose of learning the language. No shade though, I love what you do! I just feel that your videos would be more useful for Indians moving to the UK or US where the British accent is better understood than the Indian accent. Peace ✌️

Of course speaking British accent is not an easy task for indians cz English is not our mother tongue. But, we do survive well with more than 3 languages on an average which I believe is not so common in other places..... Actually, that was really quite helpful! I'm still struggling to pronounce "thank you" properly though xD I think we should all make an effort in trying to learn the correct pronunciation of things. Ofcourse different regions have different accents and that's all the more reason to learn about those different accents. Like American English is so difficult from British English and then there's Indian English. Learning the correct pronunciation will ensure a common ground and to those who call me a "wannabe" for wanting to learn a language correctly, I say they can go screw themselves.

@Sagar Laxman So, according to ur logic, if Indians speak in British accent, then we would be making fun of Brits? XD You can't have a native accent but surely by learning you can have a clear English accent.
@kruz29193 жыл бұрын
@Sagar Laxman Well, we all are proud to be Indian and the problem is we are not taught English with the correct pronunciation in schools, institutions and that's one of the main reason why people have an accent. Yeah, it's not quite possible to have a complete British or American accent but since we follow British English, at least we can have a clear accent with correct pronunciation so that people from any region can understand us clearly. If you wanna learn a language then learn it in the correct way with correct pronunciation and intonation. The thing is to speak clearly and correctly. Many people follow American and British accent in tandem so they tend to speak some words in a British way and some in American which is totally fine imo since there are 5 main accents of English and non-native English speakers can follow any of them. The main thing here is accent reduction and not just imitating an accent. I guess you get it now.

It is very handy for Russian speakers as well. I have not even realised that I say "time" with the [d] sound. But now I hear that my "time" is more like [dime].
@samyoghoshal7716 Жыл бұрын
The problem is that the languages of the subcontinent have a lot more divisions between different consonant sounds than the European languages and the set of vowels have a separate section altogether... so much so, that I have seen most native Indian sounds are impossible for the Europeans to pronounce correctly. For example, the θ version of 'th' is the second letter of the five different subdivisions of the 't' sound - ta, tha, da, dha, (r)na. The sounds have been divided in 5 different types based on how far the sound is originated in the throat from the tongue. And so it goes with all the different consonants.

For the people leaving unnecessary hate comments on this: the purpose of this video is to teach people about the difference between British English pronunciation and Indian English pronunciation. It's not to tell you that something is wrong or right, it's an educational video, particularily useful for people who want to lose their Indian accents. This is useful for actors, or people in the UK that want to develop local intonation to be able to fit in at their jobs. So stop the hate. If you dislike the video, that means that this video is probably not meant for you in the first place, as it is useful to people who see a different purpose in it. Great video.
