“Farnborough International Airshow” is presented by Airbus
British Airways is using a mototok to push back airplanes. Using this new electric robot has resulted in a 54% reduction in delays at Heathrow Airport. It has also reduced emissions and is surprisingly easy to maneuver.

The next stage has to be taking the aircraft to the end of the runway ready for takeoff, but then the mototok would have to safely get back to the Air Bridge.Although this could be done autonomously, it could present a hazard on the Taxiway, or even the runway. When motors become smaller and lighter, driven front wheels might become feasible. Powered entirely by the APU, needing no batteries, they could even provide some extra drive during takeoff and re-gen braking during landing. They could take the aircraft to the runway (or to the point where the main engines are powered up) for takeoff and taxiing to the terminal after landing. The Pilot would have control. The technology we await (and is around the corner), is motors where the stator windings comprise new lightweight carbon nanotube based conductors. The rotors would be permanent magnets and thus comprise a so called "Brushless DC" motor. These motors would have to be compact and lightweight and have sufficient torque and power range to not require gearing. Certification costs would probably make this too costly as a retrofit but I see no reason why new aircraft could not use this when the technology is ready. With little extra weight, the fuel savings would be huge. Maybe the best use will be on the First Electric airliners. ps. I am not advocating pre-spinning the wheels on landing, this could be unsafe.

Impressive, but the logic escapes me. The delay reduction was because they have one of these at every gate. They still need a person to drive it. So why didn't they just put one of the regular tugs at every gate? They don't look cheaper than a regular tug.

We have this at our airport and it’s a piece of crap... 1) You need to walk with it. 2) You can’t do towing with it. 3) If it runs out of battery halfway during pushback, good luck to you. 4) You can’t operate it in heavy rain or at night due to safety concerns If regular airtug can come and pushback on time, I don’t see how this thing can reduce delays.

Airports should have conveyour-style taxiways. Get this: an underground system of conveyour hubs which while the plane is in neutral, or off, a series of tow-hubs "catch" the aircraft's tires, pushing or pulling the plane to controlled areas. The system will be like a car-wash. With the plane's engines off or idle, the system will be economical for both airlines and airports. Of course fail-safe systems will be integraded to ensure safety and use of gas-powered tugs will be there for occasions of manual actions. This is just an idea. In no way is it going to be ideal to RC tugs. Also as just an idea, will not comment more on the mechanics or suitable use. Hmmmm......????

this video has one minor fault, it sase no C02(Carbon Dioxide) emmisions, when you breath it oxegen its comes out as Carbon Dioxide, Carbon because the oxygen picks up carbon molecule when it goes through your lungs, di(as in 2)oxide(as in oxygen), C02, what they realy mean is carbon monoxide, wich is toxic to inhale, and is produced (i dont know the actuely definition) when you burn fuel in a car/vehicle, so basicly what comes out of a car exhaust, most people probably now this, but for people that does, you learned something new today, im 12 btw lol

u r butthurt, that is part of the definition of a robot and "programmable' is a dead giveaway that it means it still controlled by a human by a new set of data controls hence why many robots are still puppets such as this for example. from Wikipedia - A robot is a machine-especially one programmable by a computer- capable of carrying out a complex series of actions automatically. *Robots can be guided by an external control device or the control may be embedded within.* Robots may be constructed to take on human form but most robots are machines designed to perform a task with no regard to how they look.

chowdery1234 I think it’s honestly gonna make jobs. The tugs that pull planes have to move around and switch between multiple gates with a group of which I believe is one or two people. This however has one or two people working at every gate, so if you had two people controlling and switching between three gates they’d lose time but now you could have one or two people pulling planes immediately as they need to be so three gates could house 3 or 6 people.
