Mine in the 1970’s had leather wear patches front and back on the inside; large pieces of leather put on in manufacture……Our straps and buckle end were made of leather too.

Speaking of “often misnamed” the video title says ‘aklets.’

Blanco anklets when i joined. After depot, joined the Btn where they were polished black. Then, as mentioned, we moved to puttees until boots combat high.

It was quite interesting to note that on the post-war anklets at the end, the leather reinforcing patch has been placed with the smoother 'shiny side' towards the boot.. As shown here the lower edge of the anklet was susceptible to damage/wear but I have also noticed that, especially when wet, the lower edge of the anklet often scrubs at the finish of the leather on the issue Ammunition boots (especially at the front over the laces) and this can occur even with the ww2 dated anklets which have the leather reinforcements placed with the 'rough side' towards the boots. This could just be something particular to a specific manufacturer of course but it could also be an attempt to stop the rubbing wear to both the anklets and the boots where the two items meet..

The white ones worn for ceremonial purposes in the Royal Navy were always called 'gaiters'; I never heard them called 'anklets'.

"Leggings, Mens" is the new nomanclature of the Royal Navy anklets and come in a sort of off white canvas (so still need whitened) but come complete with canvas tabs (negative metal fittings), white metal buckles and a strip of canvas and two half circles of leather to reinforce underneath. That being said these are the pattern the come from stores (the set I use being 2007 dated), there are all sorts of surplus and mix match patterns in use, my last Sea Cadet unit had an example of most shown in the video, as they aren't used very much now they just seem to keep on going 😊

We wore anklets with WW2 style battle dress at school in the CCF in the 1970s.

We had these in the Army cadets in 1975, used with working dress but used black boot polish to make them black. They were just called gaiters. Most of us got our own putties, as they fitted better and we're what the Regular army was using at the time.

Yuk….we had them until 1976 and were then issued puttees…….until combat highs were issued to us in 1984…..

We wore black polished anklets well into the 80's. Our DMI said that black polish preserved the material wheras Blanco was damp & aided rotting in the tropics

Was it someone's Army number on the first ones, maybe this could be linked to an individual soldier. Was T.A. from 78 till 81,then Regular Army, but never seen these. Not much support for ankles probably.

Wonder if the leather trim ones were officers version, didn't they have to pay for some of their own uniform.

Excellent video as always but was it intentional to not give info on sizing? How many sizes were there and was size 1 smallest or largest?

Unless I'm going mad one, usually right, looks noticeably larger than the other. Even when right on top of one another you fan see it so it isn't a perspective thing There a reason for this ?

Interestingly they went back to Putties when I was in the army in the 80s Can’t see why they did , cost maybe ?. I found the Combat high boots very uncomfortable and heavy 😊
