Driving from Stockholm to Luleå takes about 12 hours. Sweden is the fifth largest country in Europe. So much bigger than most realize. It’s massive. And, since it’s all stretched out vertically, it touches a lot of different climate zones. Driving south-to-north in Sweden is quite the experience.

agreed, and most don't realise that we can have snow in Kiruna on midsummer's eve and green lawns in Malmö on new year's eve, so climate is very different depending on exactly where you are in Sweden

The shovel is foldable and is part of your kit, you can also use it as frying pan if need be. It often has saw side of the spade too, it is a multi tool.

He actually said it was the first female pilot they got to THAT BASE (F21). He didn't allude to how many female pilots they had in total (in the country), just that they've been bad at recruiting them. But I'm just at the beginning of the video.

As it was said in one of the previous episodes. If you succeed you will learn one thing, how to do it correctly. If you fail you will learn two things, how not to do it and how to do it correctly. A good mindset during training.

It's not like a shovel blade like this takes up much volume or weight, it's just a piece of thin material. The usefulness for digging into snow to create real estate with a temperature of +4°C is priceless for staying alive.

My parents is from that area of Sweden. Stockholm to Luleå is about 900 km. The airport they are at is Kallax which is a mixed civilian and military airport and is Swedens 5th largest civilian airport. The base used to be Swedens largest with threw viggen sqadrons and a squadron of armed SK60B light attack aircraft.

You take it easy if it takes 11 hrs. I kike to get it over quick so it usually take an hour per 100km you eat at mcdonalds in Söderhamb and Max in Skellefteå.

Instructor here that's been up there with them for many years doing this. We let them use shovel in the end of there digging period thus reducing there risk of injuring hands, arms etc that could occur because of digging with their seat, quit challenging.

Stockholm to Luleå is about 900km by car, as a comparison, the distance from Stockholm to Berlin is 1000km, so it's a long drive for sure.

a simple "shovel" is part of the seat kit together with the one man life raft (they used them as sleds here) and parachute (the 11m in dameter piece of cloth and 220m of line becomes a very good resource in a survival situation, blanket, extra insulation, foot wrap, tent...). Back to the snow, snow is more or less only way to get shelter from the elements in the mountain region during winter, the snow can be over 2m deep in places, laghest "tree" will be arctic birch or willow, scraggy things twisted by the environment into crooked dwarves usually under 2.5m tall... so shelter=snow in some form. only heat source is twigs sticking up through the snow, so you use as little fuel as possible or burn combustible stuff from plane/vehicle... if possible. arctic survival is a very high risk thing, no real second chance in -30c...

Surpricing that they don't seem to be using equipment from Blizzard Survival for keeping warm, those kits are perfect to keep in survival packs that are stashed away long periods of time.

Free space, sure, but F21 chares the same place with the civilian airport Luleå Airport. so maybe on takeoff it's not that free space :) But the area they can practice in is huge.
