Seriously, I love this thing. It's well made, windproof, warm but not too warm, and packed with features.

Waiting For The Fall: 1. The buttons are called "Canadian buttons". This is because the Canadians invented them and were the first to use them on combat clothing. The British Army later copied the Canadians in putting on the buttons on combat clothing, such as the combat smock. 2. The pockets are called "bellows pockets", because the pocket is capable of expanding to accommodate more kit held inside. This is far better than normal flat pockets, which have strict limits on pocket capacity. Regards, D.A. Stolovitch, CD Captain 2 Military Police Regiment / Canadian Forces Military Police (Retired)

In the early 1980's I had the original dpm windproof. To say it was part of my load bearing equipment is an understatement. It weighed several pounds with all the gear I had in it. I could lose my bergen, my webbing, everything, and still be able to sustain myself, navigate, and shelter with solely what I was able to pack in my smock.

Button hole pocket at the the front left chest pocket is for a silva compass, the. Button hole is to thread the compass cord through so as not to lose it.

I bought a par of the ripstop trousers which have a strange upside down pocket on the right leg with a hard plastic insert. Any ideas what it is designed for?

The newer SAS/Royal Marines smock (after pattern 95) is a superb piece of design! since I got my first one (Gen III DPM/MTP) from the Chilean Navy (the Royal Navy`s "sister navy") I have never used anything else. First I wore it with a polyester fleece underneath, but now I changed to a pure wool high collar sweater (a big quality difference, especially here in Patagonia). If it is very cold, I use a light down jacket over it and the smock on top (which is always waxed). For trekking through the woods or sitting by the fire (resistance against punctures and sparks), this cotton garment is a much better option than synthetics! The only thing I would change in the original design is the mesh lining, since it sticks to the velcro, and sharp things like pencils protrude through it.

You can pick these up now in Civvy colours. I know how much my friends across the pond love these. I'm in the states every couple of years and take a few of them over for my US mates.

Great review! FYI, there is a slightly newer model - 'Smock 2, Combat, Windproof, MTP, PCS, CU', which is very similar, but with a few improvements that make it better in the field, IMHO. You can also stitch BDU buttons into the inside if you want to make it compatible with an M65 liner in the colder months. All the best!

The problem with internal mesh pockets is that the mesh sticks to the velcro or gets caught in the zip and you end up with holes in the mesh. It's a great jacket, thanks for the video, very good.

I have gone through several military jackets that I have worn for many years. But this jacket/smock is my all time favorite! Perfect for the fall, winter and spring here in Vietnam. It's well worth the money and I think it is better than the US M65 and I have gone through 6 of the M65. I would highly recommend this garment! Sam Adler from Vietnam

It was part of the Soldier 2000 kit review and is now called PCS personal clothing system. They're excellent and if you're just civvy mooching around they wax really well to increase wind and water at the expense of breathability. The heavyweight Gore-tex jacket is excellent too. The pocket you think is missing a button is a compass pocket, the button hole is for lanyarding your compass. They also dye really well but take a couple of dye packs and 2lbs of salt. An OG overwash looks great and mutes the camouflage pattern.

@@waitingforthefall627 Yes it was during the Gulf war that the British military realised that the old uniform was not suitable for the new threat area. Before this we were ready for the cold war, so all the gear was for Northern Europe.

@@frogmaster83 necessity-driven innovation. I'd imagine the old desert color way of DPM would only be effective in wide, sandy deserts and much less so in more mountainous areas. I'm glad you guys never screwed around with digital camouflage. As far as I've seen, the Canadians and the Russians have been the only ones to get it right.

@@waitingforthefall627 The upside of the change was the was loads of the old gear going cheap. The desert DPM works well in winter if you wash it in a brown dye. I did this a few months ago. 👍 kzbin.info/www/bejne/jHKtmKycjLRpY9k

@@frogmaster83 if you carried a mil spec poncho (Helikon-Tex) as rain wear and also as bare minimum shelter, would you recommend a windproof smock to be worn under it as adequate rain wear in the colder months or would you recommend the goretex jacket to go over the windproof smock plus the poncho too? Or would the windproof smock be sufficient in the rain if worn under a poncho since only your lower sleeves would be exposed and if so is the windproof smock sufficiently water repellent to not soak water through to inner insulation layers or up your arms? Also I assume there is water proof spray that could be applied just to the sleeves? My concern with goretex jacket is that it would be very humid when moving and make inner insulation layers wet while also being excess/redundant weight if a poncho is also already being carried which is so much more versatile than a dedicated goretex jacket, the poncho even covers your pack, belt kit and breathes/vents much better than a goretex jacket? As a civilian I assume it’s fairly rare that a dedicated goretex jacket would be really needed? Most of the time it just rains lightly or you can wait under shelter for heavy driving rain to stop? 🤔

The ring tab as you call it is a rank slide. You put your rang epoulet there. It differs from the older smocks which had them on each shoulder.

Joe Kurtz i highly suggest getting the multicam/MTP. They've updated a lot of the features, and after comparing mine to the older S95 smocks the newer ones seem far better. Fleece in the pockets, better material, better fit. I still really like the old ones as well. I'll have to look into the pants!

The newer mk2 version has done away with the mesh inner and replaced it with a solid piece of material and includes zippers on the side hand warmer pockets allowing you to store gloves etc in them or just close them to prevent water ingress etc.

What’s the ideal size (I’m 184 height/95 chest size so the nearest exact size they make is 180/96 but assume that would be too tight fitting) if you want enough room under the smock to have enough room for thicker insulation winter layers while still allowing enough room to move? What size height/chest are you relative to any larger sized windproof jacket you bought? I would be buying online so need to get the size right. Thanks for any help
