No. 1 rule of hockey: Keep your head UP. That's why these hits look so brutal; they didn't see them coming. The body's not ready for the impact.
@jayjayjames2332

You're also less likely to get hit (depending on where you are at least). No one's going to line up for a hit on a guy who's paying attention with enough space to just make a move to avoid it. Playing defense is the better play than going for a hit in most of those cases.

Rules on hitting (checking): Player in control of the puck is eligible to be hit at any time. A player who has just played a puck (touched it or passed it) is also eligible to be hit, but there is a judgment call as far as whether the hit is late (generally speaking, you get a count of one-one-thousand/two-one-thousand between the puck being gone and the hit being delivered. This being because once a player is committed to his check, it is diffcult to stop or redirect his momentum). Hitting a player who does not have the puck, or hitting the player late results in an interference penalty (two minutes in the penalty box). As to HOW a check is to be delivered: You cannot make contact with the head or face, although this often happens incidentally as a result of contact, as when, for example, a shoulder-to-shoulder hit results in one player's shoulder riding up the other's, and then making contact with the head/face. The head/face can NEVER be the primary/principle point of contact. The player making the check must be in a glide when he makes contact; if he is still skating when he hits an opponent, it's a charging penalty (two minutes). Hits from behind are frowned upon, but often are allowed so long as the official does not believe the contact was overly-aggressive. Aggressive hitting from behind or deliberately smashing an opponent into the boards/glass while in stride -- as opposed to gliding -- is a penalty, "charging" or "boarding". Hits from behind on a defenseless player are punished severely with major penalties (5 minutes) and misconducts (10 minute penalties or ejection, or both), for ex: the receiving player has his face turned towards the boards and glass and cannot prepare for contact, hitting a player who is already down or obviously injured). In the "Old Days" players were allowed to "wrap up" (a short bear hug) someone rather than hit them from behind, but the rules were changed to avoid having the hugger hold on for too long. It used to be a courtesy between players to simply wrap each other up for second or two in that instance rather than drilling each other in the back. The league felt this was being abused to interfere with a player's ability to play a puck and changed the rules. We'd probably see a lot fewer concussions and head injuries in hockey if we changed this back. Nowadays, guys are told to deliberately turn their backs to protect the puck along the boards and glass, rather than take the check, because we're now more a "possession" game than a physical one (although there's still plenty of physical!). The checker's hands, elbows and stick must be kept down and clear, typically below the checkee's shoulders. Any hands, elbows or sticks to the face result in penalties (two minutes for high sticking, elbowing, or roughing, or harsher penalties, double minors (4 minutes) or major penalties -- 5 minutes, can be tossed from the game -- for egregious hits and cutting an opponent or drawing blood). You generally attempt to hit a player in the shoulders or in the chest, leading with your own shoulder, with elbows tucked into your sides. A Hip Check is delivered by running your hip into the opponent's hip/upper thigh and knocking him off balance, or pinning him to the boards. You can never go for the knees. P.S. a hockey player's typical "shift" on ice lasts 35-45 seconds. Two minutes is an extreme physical hardship.

I'm Canadian, and 65.93 yrs old. I played "full contact" ice hockey from about age 6 or 7 to about 12 or 13, in a local (very minor) league. We didn't have a lot of fights. I was quite good at body checking and digging the puck out in the corners. We didn't have rugby here then, developed it later, and loved it later. I was still a heavy hitter (good tackler) in rugby, but did not understand the game at the same level as hockey. Later in life (age 25 to 50) I played "non-contact" hockey and was disappointed at the lack of contact. I played Rugby union a in a local league for a few years in my late 30s and early 40s, but quit both when I started getting injured at age 50 or so, as I was playing as a total amateur and risking time and pay at work if injured. As long as you stay aware of your surroundings, and don't be stupid, you won't be injured in hockey or rugby.

Ice shifts are 30-45 seconds because its a sprint-based game on both offence and defence. After 60 seconds most people would die, and pros who do it at world-class level gradually become super slow until they're useless and may as well be dead (usually 2 minute mark). Coaches punish players who dont keep short shifts (they bench them for long period of time and do not allow them on the ice)
@lukasnorie
@lukasnorie 3 жыл бұрын
There are a lot of rules around tackling in hockey; You're only allowed to hit a player who is in possession of the puck, however, if someone is in possession and then passes the puck, they are still free play to hit for up to 2 seconds (this is up to each referee on their own, but the accepted time is 1.5-2 seconds after release of puck), otherwhise that's considered Interference. You're not allowed to hit someone directly in the head, this rule is relatively new, first in 2010 checking to the head became illegal only if it was from the "blind side", but in 2013 they made any checking to the head illegal. You're not allowed to "blind-side" someone, some of the hits in this video where blind-side hits meaning you come from an angle where they just can't see you, one of the ones in this video was delivered by Scott Stevens to Paul Kariya, but back then it was still legal. That hit I think was also to the head which is even worse, Kariya went in to the dressing room for 10 minutes, came out, scored a goal. There's also something called "charging" which basically means you're not allowed to "charge" in to hit someone. You're not allowed to tackle someone from behind in to the boards. You're not allowed to "crosscheck" someone (which is bringing up your stick with both hands in to a hit). You're not allowed to use your elbow as the main point of contact either. You're not allowed to put your hands up in the face of someone you're hitting either. You're not allowed to take someone out by the knees, hips are fine but not knees. There's a whole bunch of rules surrounding any kind of hit around the boards, basically if you fuck someone up real bad by being inconsiderate when going in to the boards you can get penalized and even suspended. Probably missed something, someone can fill out the rest.

I appreciate how you guys acknowledge that the players are huge and very fit, also the length of shifts and etc. A lot of people don't know that it takes a lot of endurance and strength to play this game. A suggestion, react to Best Shootout Goals. You see how vicious they are in hits, now look at how talented they are in terms of skill. also, yes you may only hit the puck carrier, if you hit someone who doesn't it can be assessed as an interference penalty. While you technically can hit the goalie in certain situations, its just one of those unwritten rules that you dont touch- or even BREATHE on the goalie lest you want to incur the wrath of his teammates.

I’m actually a hockey ref! And you’re mostly right about the rules; when in possession of the puck or if you’ve just passed it (within a second) you’re eligible to be checked. BUT headshots, blind-sides, and checks from behind (especially into the boards) are illegal. There is also a penalty for charging, where you must stop striding before a hit and glide into it, and you mustn’t leave your feet while making impact. Lots of times the force and speed means you will undoubtedly leave your feet after that hit, but you can’t “jump” into it. On a lighter note, hockey is also beautifully skilled and graceful. Watch highlights of Connor McDavid for an awesome mix of speed and skill, or Patrick Kane for dazzling stickhandling and deke-ing. Alex Ovechkin for raw shooting power (he’s pushing for the all-time goals record, which nobody thought would be even possible to reach after Gretzky set it.)

It used to be a hard man’s game, now, with very rare exception, it’s a bunch of pussies in visors who can’t wait for the game to be over so they can play XboX against each other. Some of the hits on this video are quite old. In the NHL for the past 5-6 years, the rules are quite severe for hits from behind or from the blind spots on the side. Also, any hit directly to the head is an automatic match misconduct penalty and the team plays short of a player for 5 minutes. The infractions I mentioned here are automatically reviewed by a committee and players can be suspended for many games, especially if they aren't at their first infraction to the rules.

There's a lot of nuances with the rules of hockey hits, like you're not allowed to leave your feet, etc...there's also sort of an unwritten code on the ice that the purpose is to stop momentum and protect each other rather than trying to injure each other... Back in the day you had enforcers on the ice as sort of an arms race of goons who kept the peace and if someone got out of line on the other team it was their job to set them straight, and teams would keep trying to find the toughest guys to sign with them in order to intimidate the other teams...essentially, if you saw that guy coming in for a shift on the ice, it was because he was there to send a message or to return a receipt from something that had happened to his team earlier in the game...if you headhunted one of the star players on the opposing team with intent to injure, it was a surefire way to put a bounty on your own head...these days that's pretty much all gone and the league has put extra rules in place to help protect players rather than players protecting each other...

Gentlemen, you are correct. Most of the hits in this video are indeed penalties. No, you can't hit the goalkeeper, unless he is handling the puck. But then teams tend to protect their goalkeepers, and a fight usually quickly ensues. If you were to rewatch that hit on the goalie, you will see a team-mate on his way to 'see' the guy that hit his goalie. An old Canadian saying, "I was at the fight and a hockey game broke out!" Yes, fighting is part of hockey, because if it weren't, there would be so many cheap shots that there would soon be no players left to play. With fighting, if anybody takes a cheap shot, he will be sicced on. And fighting is also a penalty, and the team that STARTS the fight gets an extra two minutes for instigating the fight and the other team gets a power play. Also remember, during the regular season most teams are playing 3 games a week! Not once a week like American football or European football (soccer) either. And the usual shift for a player is about 1 minute, if that.

Guys, alot of the added injury of the hit is when the players head hits the ice. that hard surface adds to the damage of the impact. So, you have to understand that as well. The floor, the ice...there is no bending...its all bounce, slap, smack, crack on the floor that is ice covered concrete. The unwritten rule of fighting now suggests, when your man is dropped by a punch, its over, you don't jump on him and keep pounding. In the old days...you kept punching no matter what...you beat your man. look at some of the old fights, create that segment, the brawls of the 60's, then see the fights of the 90's on up.

How many of my fellow Canadians laugh when you hear people say ice hockey? Cause to us it's just hockey 😂 also the football hockey comparison was off just a bit 😂 generally a perfect hockey shift is 20 seconds, 30 seconds usually, so 2 minutes is way too long, player runs out of gas and cramps up and are less efficient if they stay out too long, that's why coaches will call time out if his players get stuck on the ice to long and there is an icing call. Great video guys

As a Canadian, no we don’t just watch for massive hits, it’s all just a normal part of the game, of course it’s exciting, just as fights are, but it’s just all a part of the whole of the sport. It’s really just like any sport, it’s to see a good competition and declaring a winner. If you’re rooting for your hometown team it’s doesn’t mean piss if your team has all these great hits, and fights if they lose.

Gretzky was really good at avoiding hits. He knew where everyone was and where they were going to be. So, I saw (a live game on TV) Gretzky dipsy-doodling around a couple of pylons (defense men) and one reached out, grabbed Gretz by the back of his jersey and flipped him horizontal in the air, still in motion, and crashed him to the ice. Penalty of course, but Gretz was furious. He wasn't big.

There are a lot of rules around not hitting the goalie. He's supposed to be safe in the trapezoid behind the net. There are legal ways to hit the goalie, but it is a sure way to get the whole team finding ways to take as many shots at you as possible. It's pretty common to see everyone (except the goalies, goalies usually don't fight) on the ice to start fighting if a goalie gets hit.

And most of these lads in the NHL are 5'10" to 6'4" and about 200 to 240 pounds. Big boys with serious speed and skill. Brutal sport with incredible grace, speed and finesse. Much like the NFL, the NHL has implemented rules to keep hits away from the head and they have been pretty successful at curbing injuries. If the goal keeper is out of his crease (front of the net) he can be hit, but you will start a fight. No other player is going to allow their goal keeper to be hit without retribution.

@@Doorsofprcptn If the goalie wanders afield and plays the puck, he can be hit. A penalty might be called depending upon how he is hit but more likely, the teammates will seek immediate retribution. Although, on the rare occasion, the goalie can get the better of the one trying to check them and that usually leads to alot of laughs. I speak from experience for that last bit. I played high school hockey as a goalie. One instance, I came way out to play the puck as not playing it would have given an opposition player a break away so I had to act. I simply whacked it off the boards and out of the zone while the opponent just went after me. He was considerably shorter than me but threw himself at me for the easy hit. I knew it was coming so I prepared as best I could, made the play and took the hit. I cha-cha'd on my skates but never went down while he bounced off me and sailed on his ass almost to the boards. The howling on the ice and from the bench was glorious! Play continued so I had to quickly skate back to the crease so I didn't get to celebrate much but it was definitely an hilarious bit.
