6:14 CONTEXT: During the 2nd round of the 2021 playoffs, Jake Evans of the Montréal Canadiens scored on the empty net to win Game 1 for the Habs... Mark Scheifele of the Winnipeg Jets came from the other side of the ice, saw Evans, and delivered this hit. When the rest of the Habs came to confront him (and rightfully so), he had this dumbfounded look on his face as if he thought what he did was somehow legal 🙄. Anyways, Scheifele had a hearing with the Department of Player Safety after the game and explained that he was trying to "negate a goal". Some Jets fans say this hit is "clean" but IF Scheifele really wanted to negate the goal, he could've reached out with his stick and knock the puck away from the next, but instead was completely fixated on Evans and made the head the main point of contact. It's difficult to see in real-time but Scheifele even stops skating for a moment to line up his hit on Evans. What made it even WORSE was that the game was on Evans' 25th birthday and although MTL won, he was stretchered off and did not return to play until the next round of the playoffs... Scheifele was subsequently suspended 4 games and MTL swept WPG to move on to the next round (luckily for Scheifele, he no longer had a target on his back after his team was eliminated).

We just lost a player last night to a high skate, Adam Johnson. Big hit, skate flew in the air, slit the poor guys throat. Very young guy. He played for Nottingham, and they were going against sheffield. Tragic

You’re not allowed to leave your feet or target the head when hitting a player. A lot of the highlights shown here resulted in penalties and suspensions.
@coreyrees840
@coreyrees840 Жыл бұрын
Targeting the head is a more recent rule though. Head down man down is what we used to be taught. Responsibility was on the puck carrier to have his head up and on a swivel otherwise a Scott Stevens type was putting his shoulder on your chin and completely legal. Elbows of course have always been a different story

Hockey players are amazing. They are not wimps. There was a player on the Boston Bruins who ended up breaking his leg but still went finished playing his shift. There is a long history of players who have broken ankles and legs but still continue playing. Hockey players look at athletes in other sports as babies who don’t know how to play through injuries.

The legal checks are the hip check and the shoulder check and you can only target the opponent between his neck and hip. Leaving the ice by jumping up into the player is illegal, targeting the head is illegal. There are other illegal checks and they require a penalty for the offending player.

There will be a push for kevlar neck guards now. I don't think that they have to be bulky, it really could just be a Kevlar sleeve. This incident with Adam Johnson is a tradegy. I am a Pens fan and remember him. Everyone said that he was a good guy as well. He played alot for the Scranton-Wilkes Barre Pens (one step below NHL).

The basic rule to remember on hockey hits is they need to be delivered with the trunk of the body (from shoulders to hips) to the trunk of your opponents body. If you use anything outside the trunk, like an elbow, or if you hit anywhere outside the trunk, like the head or the knees. It's probably illegal.

At 1:22, that hit from 2006 was Brian Campbell on R.J. Umberger. Some fan produced an image of a can of "Campbell's Cream of Umberger soup." The hit at 6:05 was a dirty play by Mark Scheifele ("SHIFE-lee"), who is not generally regarded as a dirty player. He was frustrated that his team had allowed an empty-net goal, and he was suspended for it. When the gloves go flying like at 9:28, that is sometimes called "confetti gloves."

Hockey world just lost a player in the EIHL 🇬🇧. Adam Johnson of the Nottingham Panthers died after getting his throat cut by a skate blade in a game against the Sheffield Steelers. Johnson had previously played in Augsberger (DEL 🇩🇪), Malmö (SHL 🇸🇪), Lehigh Valley, Ontario, and Wilkes-Barre/Scranton (AHL 🇺🇸🇨🇦). He also appeared in 13 NHL games for the Pittsburgh Penguins, scoring one goal and three assists. This will definitely get a discussion going about added safety for vulnerable points, such as the neck area and wrists. RIP Adam. It was supposed to be just like any other game.

A lot of these hits were penalized, for example one of them (wilson's hit on sundqvist) resulted in a 20 game suspension (reduced eventually to 14), but the general rule is shoulder to shoulder or a hip check are legal, no intentional contact to the head, don't leave your feet and don't charge into the hit.

Thing about the feet flying is so true. The EIHL saw a terrible tragedy yesterday during a game to former NHL player Adam Johnson, RIP, and it's atrocious how non hockey fans are calling it deliberate murder when in hockey unfortunately when you take a hit or lose your balance from a collision your feet can go flying and you lose control of them. Skate cuts aren't rare in hockey but they aren't super common. However deaths in general are quite rare when it comes to hockey, having a lower death rate than soccer/football.

Just to put things in perspective. The average NHL player id 6 foot 1 and weighs 200lbs. They skate at about 23 mph so when two players are skating at each other the collision happens at betwenn 40 and 50 mph. Thats a lot of kinetic energy !!!!

Players do get sliced by skates from time to time. BUT the scariest was when the goalie for Buffalo in the late 80’s got his jugular vein sliced in his neck !!! The only reason he didn’t die was because the trainer was a medic in Vietnam I believe & so he had experience with traumatic neck injuries.

Hockey hits i believe hurt more than a football hit, i think a study did the amount of force and impact and what obviously also adds the pain is the cold ass ice on the ground. It's just that hits like this is hockey aren't as common as in football. You could go shifts without getting hit like this

The rules for hitting are relatively simple. Anyone who ia touching the puck or is within a half second or so of having touched it is fair game. You must use the trunck of the body and you cannot hit the opponents head first. You also not.allowed to leave your feet while delivering the hit. Now if you leave your feet on the follow through of your hit then its leagal. If you hit the head of your opponent on the follow through then once again ita legal.
