Footage of Brimstone anti-armour missiles being launched in Ukraine surfaced for the first time on 12 May but recent footage points to Ukraine now potentially deploying the Dual Mode Brimstone 2. In this video we look at what the missile is capable of, how they came to be in Ukraine and how they have been deployed.
For the update since our last video on Brimstone jump to 04:10.

I think it is a great idea to use standard trucks. It is so much simpler then using heavy and expensive military gear. The light trucks seem capable enough for where you'd want to go.

The only problem i see is that using civilian trucks carrying missiles can give russia more reasons to target civilian targets (hence why it is a war crime to disguise military equipment as civilian)

@@BS-vm5bt MBDA UK really are something special. Have you read about the MBDA UK Complex Weapons Team? They're the guys who have started making "Missile Modules" So, CAMM is the rocket body from ASRAAM, the seeker had from, er, I forget which active radar missile. And the guidance computer and hardware (including mid course correction Antennae) is common across all of them, just reprogrammed. Then you change the rocket body for: CAMM-ER (for ships) CAMM-MR (for the Polish) And the very latest block AIM-132 ASRAAM is all the CAMM modules but the seeker swapped out for the IR module. So _very_ close to missile Lego! 😂
@MostlyPennyCat
@MostlyPennyCat 7 ай бұрын
I cannot wait to see the economies of scale you get from this when all of Eastern Europe start buying the modules by the ship load. And have you seen how the modular nature extends to the Supacat/ASRAAM vehicle built for the Ukrainians it uses high off bore sight and lock on after launch with an extended targeting camera on the truck. As soon as it spots a target, it notifies the gunner and the missile. Gunner pulls the trigger and launches the missile straight up. It rolls over and it's given mid course fisher to the target. Next, it leverages HOBS and LOAL to lock into its target as the missile exchanges altitude for speed. Once locked, target is handed off to the missile and the truck goes back to looking for targets. The missile dives into the target, which we're told has included Ka-52s and we've seen it make Mach-3+ hours on Shahed drones.

Brimstone is insane. It basically has eyes that detect radar light on the front. Thing is, radar light goes through trees, buildings and only bounces off metal stuff. So the brimstone shoots out a flashlight of radar light and that bounces off metal shit. The eyes in the brimstone then can see what metal things are in the area and talk to the computer on which is best to kill and how to get there. Its basically missile AI with its own brain and eyes. Just tell it where you think something is and it will go hunting for you.

There were around 2,300 Brimstone 1 made in the first production run. c1,000 of these were converted into the original Dual Mode Brimstone missile for the Urgent Operational Requirement for a low collateral weapon for Iraq and Afghanistan. These were being introduced around the same time as the Libya intervention in 2011. All of these converted missiles have been expended in operations, training and testing. Only c60 Brimstone 1 were ever used in combat, all in Libya during the intervention with Dual Mode Brimstone being the preferred variant. Since then the UK has not had armoured vehicle targets to fire at or Rules of Engagement have required man in the loop guidance in order to engage. Consequently there were large numbers (probably just over 1,000) of Brimstone 1 in stockpile at the start of the Ukraine War. All would be life expired in the next 5-10 years. Since then the UK introduced Brimstone 2 in 2016 with longer range and removal of obsolescence and has now moved to Brimstone 3A, with 3B arriving this year, both with even greater range. These are all Dual Mode straight out of the factory, so have the MMW radar and SAL guidance, in addition to GPS/INS. Essentially the Brimstone 2 and 3 have greater range and capability so the RAF will be very happy to send the original missiles over as long as the Treasury funds direct replacements.... I suspect the reason for Brimstone 2 being sent to Ukraine is not due to the Brimstone 1 stockpile being exhausted but more due to a desire to also utilise laser guidance. There are none of the earlier generation Dual Mode Brimstone left to send as they were all used. Presumably Brimstone 1 will continue to be sent as well. I'm actually surprised that we haven't sent any of our Hellfire K as they must be in a similar position to the early Brimstone. Hopefully someone will work out how to get Hellfire L working in an improvised mount as well, otherwise they might never get the opportunity to kill a Russian tank...

Brimstone outdoes the 114, but JAGM (AGM-179) is moving to full rate production now and includes many of the same capabilities. It's pretty likely that over time US production capabilities will outpace the UK's and JAGM will become the cheaper, and the go to that the 114 has been in the past, especially with how ubiquitous US aerial systems are across NATO in comparison to UK systems. For example, even the UK has chosen the JAGM to arm their AH-64E fleet.

They configuration of the kill box is defined (thin and long or short and fat) its grid and the size of the salvo is fed to each missile. The priority of target is set, ie air defence, tank, apc, artillery and the salvo is then fired. Each missile will scan the the kill box and determine what type of targets are detected, it then use a algorithm to decided its own target, because each missile knows its launch order ( which is one of the reasons they fire one at a time) it can ensure 2 missiles don't target the same vehicle. For example if the salvo of 3 scans the kill box and detects a Sam, tank and then and apc, missile 1 will go for the sam, 2 the tank and 3 the Apc.

Thats around $100,000. GMLRS M30A1 is around $100,000 as well at the latest price (2021, US miitary spent $1.1bn on 9,000 M30A1 and 2,000 reduced range practice rounds). There are two types of MMW radar seeker, active and passive. They are sometimes refereed to as thermal radar. The passive ones are really just like an imaging infrated sensor but at a slightly lower freqency. Active MMW radar would scan in an image but imagine that each pixel has range information as well so that it is effectively 3D radar. I know that the German SMArt 155 round uses both ative and passive MMW radar to target a tank after being slowed by a parachute. I suspect Brimestone uses both as well but would be higher resolution and range than SMArt 155. MMW sensors are used on self driving cars and cruise controls as well.

I guess mounting them on a Truck safes cost's and weight if you would use them instead in a armored vehicle. If that is a 4x4 truck it should be good enough to go offroad, at least good enough to hide it in a forest or something like that. With the Range of the missiles i think there is no need for armor you probably stay far from the frontline anyways. The Ukrainian military's watermark would have been just where the right of the missile in the shot (as far as I remember, the original shot was in portrait aspect). 1:05 Is it weird to be an American that a kilometer as a distance makes more visual sense than a mile? It's 1000 m16a2s, or it's basically an American football field(yes yards to meters does cause a bit of a loss of distance, I'm aware) but it's so much easier... I'm not saying the whole metric system, I like ounces and such just because of how easily they divide, but for distance... I can't picture a mile.. I can at best picture the quarter mile track I'd have to run four times, but that was round, not straight, so even a quarter mile is hard to judge... So I've got my Google maps set to KM, (even if Im used to driving speed limits in mph) Anyone else a crazy yank like me? I guess being in the "south Detroit/north Windsor"(look at a map of the joke isn't obvious) area also has got me accustomed to it since Canada is a bridge away(though I feel sorry for anyone there losing their firearms... It's depressing to see my bridge away brethren lose their firearms) All that aside, anyone from here or anywhere else in the u.s. find kilometers easier to visualize? If only from American football?

Pains me to say the Metric system makes far more sense... In the UK we use a mix of Metric and Imperial. We buy milk in litres, building materials in kg, measure lengths in cm....but buy beer in pints, speed limits in MPH and measure distances in miles...
@JaykPuten
@JaykPuten Жыл бұрын
@@dogsnads5634 I knew you guys used a mix of both... But it sounds like in some cases you use the worst choices... Like be honest, what unit of weight measurement do you like, the kilogram, the pound, or the stone? (And there's 2 right answers, and it's because everyone *should* love a bush song) I'm kidding, but man a pound being 16 oz makes it easy to split with people, since 16 is a compound number (shout-out to numberphile and stand-up maths) So while you(the British) can have the best of both worlds, sounds like you *sometimes* pick the worst of the two... That said a pint is 100% the best unit of measurement when it comes to beer, hands down, the only thing I want in a liter is my Pedialyte (suero oral if you live in Mexico or have a Mexican town near you like me, or whatever the British equivalent of electrolyte drink is for hangovers, or after playing fútbal with friends to stay hydrated) and that's just because a liter makes more sense... Even if it fits in 0 cupholders Though to be honest I was aware that Britain used a mix of both, I just felt like helping co-miserate with you... And wishing the world would come up with a metric/"imperial" hybrid... Because I get the world needs a universal standard, but some things aren't so great in metric, foods, weights, anything you intend to split evenly with people, the "imperial" system and it's easier with compound numbers than to bring out a calculator and get weird fractions... Plus then countries couldn't make the stupid mistake of having one team use metric distances, and another use "imperial" to cause a probe to crash into Mars *COUGH* NASA Though I could be wrong... I often am wrong... But 10000% still believe kilometers make the most sense as a standard of distance as even us yanks know them even if no one's pointed out the American football connection

Speed in MPH Distance in miles Petrol (Gas)/Diesel sold in litres Ships in tons Vegetable in kilos Marijuana in ounces.. Height for people in Feet and Inches Weight in stones and lbs Unless you're dealing with the medical profession who use metric... It goes on and on... @@dogsnads5634 ah marijuana is dictated in oz...(I don't smoke myself) But yet another example of where compound numbers work better.. since you can divide 16 by, 2, 4, 8, and 16... Instead of being like "ok I got a pound of this, that's 1.1 kilos, so let's figure out how to divide that between the 4 of us"... Again not against the metric system.. But I think hybridization between the two could really work wonders, esp in parts of the world where there isn't amazing education systems... Also buying petrol (I'm an internet user, so let's be honest, there's no need to assume most of us don't know what petrol is) in Liters sounds... Annoying... Then again that's probably because from what I've heard it's expensive over there... Over here(in my particular part of the U.S. and living near a refinery, in Detroit) a gallon was like $3.09 Though drive 1.6km away and it's instantly already $3.39... Not to brag, as I'm really not trying to... But man where the game civilization starts you... And where you're born shouldn't have such insane advantages and disadvantages... If I was born a few km east, I'd have socialized healthcare... But, with my luck I was born where I was... Which being 2ish weeks out of the hospital... Makes me wanna go back for the stress when I get the full bill(even though I have insurance)... I probably didn't need to reply to you, but also did for that sweet engagement KZbin likes... That Irish engineer did a pretty funny video on this one, can highly recommend it (cannot think of the channel name right now). I always wonder, did they name it Brimstone because us Americans called ours the Hellfire? I mean the Hellfire was originally an 'acronym' for heliborne laser, fire and forget missile, so what does Brimstone entail? Besides that, is the US gonna send our AGM114Ls and/or JASMs? Also, I think the ability to mount these weapons in a box truck van is far more terrifying than on some tracked vehicle. From satellite or even drone footage, it could be impossible to tell this vehicle is carrying a fuck ton of millimeter wave guidance weapons until it unleashes a whole barrage of them.
@Benjd0
@Benjd0 Жыл бұрын
Brimstone was developed based on the Hellfire missile, it's essentially a big upgrade to it. So the name is likely a reference to that.
@DarkFenix2k5
@DarkFenix2k5 Жыл бұрын
The initial concept of the Brimstone was nothing more than a British-made iteration on the Hellfire, replacing the laser guidance with mmW radar, hence the very close rename. It evolved from that initial design to upgrade pretty much every aspect of the Hellfire, making it a new missile entirely. Looking at the timeline of events, its initial concept was probably rendered obsolete by the 114L, so they went back to the drawing board and gave it a much more comprehensive upgrade.
