Anti-Tank Weapons for Ukraine: Bring up the NLAW

On Monday [17 Jan 2022] it was announced that the UK would send Ukraine several shipments of light anti-armour weapons. The weapons were taken from the British Army's stock of NLAW or Next Generation Anti-Tank Weapon. In this video we'll take a look at the situation that led to the shipments and at the weapon itself and how it works.

During my military service I was lucky enough to shoot this bad boy but also the unlucky one who had to carry it. Tecnically the max range for the weapon is 1000 meters. Our anti-tank team even managed to hit targets up to 800 meters in the simulation world. However I propably wouldn't risk wasting the missile past the effective range of 400-600 meters in the real world. The weapon has almost zero backblast making it posible to shoot safely at indoors. Very handy feature in urban warfare and real nightmare for tankers.

Probably not the most accurate, as predictive systems can't account for evasive actions like changing speed or direction unless they added some other cool feature to account for that. Still should be perfect for Ukraine as they don't have the time or resources to field something like a javalin in large numbers.

@@Ashitaka255 Yeah but as a short to medium range weapon system with a reasonably short time to target it minimises the need to account for errors in accuracy or changing data. With engagement time of approx. 5 seconds there is only around 2 seconds within which deviation of the target movement could impact accuracy and tanks just aren't that agile. Would be significantly more of a problem if engaging targets out to 1-3+Km like some anti-tank systems can do.

What support ? Watch the video Ivan, this thing is being used on targets like stationary helicopters & Tanks without ERA, which greatly mitigates damage from HE contact. The top of a Russian T-90 tank is covered with such armor defense, so even if this thing came flying directly a top, it most likely wouldn't knockout the tank. Maybe just disable the turret or injure the crew

I’ve heard somewhere between 1100 and 2200 have been sent, there is photos of multiple planes full of them being unloaded in Ukraine. They also have more penetration than javelins so it will do some serious damage if they are used. The UK initially bought 20,000 with more after so the ones sent would likely be some of those initial 20,000

The NLAW is brilliant! As it flies, it keeps it's shaped charge pointed towards the target, so that it detonates downwards from above where the armour is weakest. Like a million crows pooping on you at once, if the crows shat molten copper!

The UK also paid SAAB for the development and refinement of the entire system, a 100 Mil Sterling. Sweden ( as of now ) hasn't sent any offensive military weapons to Ukraine and whatever is there is sent by other Nations or paid for by Ukraine when Ukraine was not in War.

I feel like we're given the wrong impression from video games of anti-tank weapons or explosives in general. We expect there to be a massive explosion and complete destruction of the target. In reality, these weapons are designed to disable and put the tank out of commission, not complete destruction.

Absolutely, video games typically show massive Cook offs of stored ammunition and while that's very possible (depending on tank and where you hit the vehicle) it isn't always the case. It's less common now given most light AT weapons are HEAT rather than HESH based too.

They also gloss the horror of bodies being pulled out of penetrator jet holes when over pressure occurs. Any shaped charge designed to off a tank will mortally wound crewmen inside usually graphically. A nice plus for infantry witnessing the track kill. Also high temp molten jets will burn all inside to some degree.

Remember the NLAW is built in Britain - Northern Ireland to be exact. Thales owned now but basically the Shorts missile factory. Famous for the Blowpipe etc. A joint Swedish/British effort.

@@Dettdu During the Battle of the Bulge, the goal was to reach Amsterdam and cut the flow of supplies to the Allies. One of the milestones of that German thrust was to reach an Allied fuel dump where they could refuel and continue. They didn't make it.

Although the United Kingdom seems to be not trying to get permission. Germany tried, and trying to block the transfer of defensive weapons to Ukraine. The Algorithm to this PLOS system is one of the most guarded inside of that missiles had akin to chip version of a DRM if someone tampers it will erased the missiles software code.

No one wanted to give those Syrian anti air missiles because a lot of them were jihadis. If not, war would still be raging in Syria. I'm impressed. The U.S. should send a large amount of AT-4 antitank rocket launchers to Ukraine. While the NLAW is clearly more advanced and lethal, the AT-4 still works, admittedly by shooting the latest Russian tanks from the sides and the rear. But the AT-4 is effective against thinner skin armored vehicles. It's cheaper and easily taught to use. While it's great to send all kinds of anti-tank weapon systems to Ukraine, the downside is too many different systems to teach to the Ukrainian soldiers. The more effective the latest anti-tank weapon, the more complicated it seems. It appears a mix of complicated but effective anti-tank weapons backed up by a larger quantity of easy-to-learn-and-use, older anti-tank weapons might be a good idea. It would be a psychological blow to the Russian operators of tanks and armored vehicles, knowing that almost every Ukrainian soldier is carrying some kind of anti-tank weapon. Indeed, even an old system like the LAW would be a threat to the Russians.

The UK also has a stockpile of AT4 CS that were required as an interim weapon to cover the gap of LAW 80's removal from service and the arrival of NLAW. Quite a few were expended in Afghanistan as an anti-structure weapon, but I'm surprised, given their age, that the UK hasn't (as far as we're aware) taken the opportunity of offloading their stockpile to the Ukraine.

The LAW 80 might be obsolescent but it's still effective against thinner-armored personnel carriers, armored cars, trucks, enemy jeeps, so forth. Even against tanks it could still be effective against the rear and portions of the side upper and lower side armor. Having the LAW 80 around would add to the anti-armor effectiveness of the Ukrainian solders. The idea right now is to soak the Ukrainian Army with defensive anti-armor rocket and bomb dispenser individual weapons, making self-defense more possible, preventing "tank panic" among the Ukrainian soldiers and bolstering morale. If one out of three Ukrainian soldiers are carrying an anti-armor weapon, it would make invading Russians a lot more hesitant and cautious.

Because i have, and one thing is strikingly obvious: Where are the tanks?? We see rows and rows of trucks, APCs, and IFVs. But only a dozen MBTs. What kind of invasion force is this, if it has no tanks? I´ll tell you what it is, it is a quick reaction force, not an invasion force. And it is there to guard from possible ukranian advances on Donbass! But the west likes to always paint Russia as the aggressor. There´s no mention anywhere, that this buildup only began after talk about Ukraine joining NATO, after thousands of american military "advisors" landed in Ukraine, and after many cargo aircraft delivered tons of advanced weaponry! Instead of talking down the flames, the West is pouring gasoline into the fire. And then they expect us to believe the russians are the belligerent ones! The hypocrisy is just staggering! We in the west are always quick to advocate for a minority´s self rule, but only when it suits us! In Kosovo, we went to war to give them their own country. But when the Basques tried to secede from Spain, we were quick to say no! We said yes when Georgia broke away, we said yes to a dozen others to break away from the USSR/Russia, but we say no to Donbass and South Ossetia! It´s such a hypocrisy!! And lets not forget how it all started, how the EU and the US interfered with a legitimate government, and caused its downfall in favor of extreme right wing ultra nationalists! We provoked a coup! And yet, the russians are the "evil" ones??

The NLAW piqued my interest after I tried to figure out its weird guidance system in Arma. If I understand correctly, it's not so much that it's guided as the missile is programmed to follow a curved path that will cause it to maintain the apparent degrees per second the firer observed the target moving across his field of view.

It was developed and trialled in the 80s by Hunting Engineering, the clever bit is not the tracking but the recovery of the track after the missile wobbles on launch. All burn on launch systems like LAW 80 generate insane amounts of thrust, albeit for milliseconds. More than Tornado on reheat as I recall. Even the slightest problem with the motor results in the operator having his head removed, which is exactly what happened to some American soldiers. Once you get beyond a certain calibre it just isn't realistic to engineer a safe ABOL motor that works over a wide temperature range after being stored for years, so you are obliged to push the missile out relatively gently then light the motor when it is at a safe distance. It also enables them to be fired from inside buildings which is otherwise not possible. Even Carl Gustav was not suitable for firing from inside buildings. The problem is that the slow launch causes the missile to wobble on its ballistic path so you need a guidance system to maintain a heading during the main motor burn phase. Gyroscopes are inherently sensitivity to linear acceleration so you need a very robust, low cost, sensor that can stand the acceleration but doesn't introduce too many errors. We used a hot wire Wheatstone net with an air jet that differentially cooled the elements of the net when the body rotated, when we conducted trials for the MOD in the 80s. I see that the NLAW gyroscopes were made in Plymouth, which used to be the place that made sensors like that, so my guess is that is the sensor they eventually adopted, although there are other types that will do the job. A lot of work was done on that type of guidance system as result of various programmes aimed at adding guidance to artillery shells.

The Russian airforce is going to decimate the front line. Not to mention their artillery. Anti tank weapons are virtually useless in modern warfare as the Russian guns can pound from 3 kilometres, that antitank weapon is only effective at half a kilometre.

Somehow I came across your channel and in all honesty its fantastic, slowly working through your podcasts. This video was so informative loved it. Please do more research on modern weapons. I'm very much intersetd the cold war period because it was a period of massive developement to keep Russia at a distance. I own a working Chieftain Tank Mk10 and amazed with the IFCS for its time, with a 98% accuracy on the move. L60 Leyand engine let the the tank down in early design but came good in the 13a/14a engines> Anyway looking forward to more of your research.
