For those who have a doubt : Yes the Polish lancers fought at Waterloo. They were one hundred. The one hundred who followed the emperor during his exile and his return. I respect that. My best regards to the Polish people ! (A French.)

To Adam Eva : the video referred to a single encounter, not to a war. In a war of course the British would have a great advantage, but this is a skirmish that is part of a battle. I find your reasoning to be paltry in what you commented. Also everyone knows that the Polish have always been very brave soldiers, sometimes suicidaly brave , whether Britain is a more powerful country or not

Polish Lancers, along with their famed light horse, were just about the finest and most fearsome cavalry forces on Earth for close to three centuries (middle 1500's till the Battle of Waterloo). The best of the best, and those indomitable Polish mounted warriors provided Napoleon with his most determined, loyal, tenacious, most fearless and most die hard troops, those who would rather perish than surrender. Amazing!!

@@ScottA2345 Yes and no, Cezary mistook a year 1815 for 1806 when Napoleon won a war against Prussia and took over Berlin, while Waterloo took place nine years after in 1815. In 1806 Napoleon was able to easily recreate Poland after it got robbed and partitioned by Prussia, Russia and Austria in 1795. With support of recreated Poland, the largest country of Europe Napoleon needed to fear no one, but instead he hesitated and decided to create an artificial "Duchy of Warsaw" a small state covering just 1/5 of Poland territory, as a result many Poles backed tsar of Russia Alexander I who was more pro Poland than Napoleon. In 1815 it was too late for Napoleon, he regretted his wrong decision in regard to Poland until his death at St Helena island, he called it greatest error of his lifetime.

@@Lechoslaw8546 He hesitated to create a polish state beacuse he didnt want to risk his alliance with Russia. And as everyone can se it was a big error to trust tsar Alexander and russia. To go the Middle road and create a doutchy of warsaw made no one happy. And as everyone now knows Russia were always going to backstab him in the end. The polish proved Napoleons most steadfast and relayable allies and a polish state as a extra buffer between France and Russia would have made him untouchable.
@Lechoslaw8546
@Lechoslaw8546 3 жыл бұрын
@@napoleon7107 We can see it in a broader perspective. Contrary to a common knowledge Russia was not a sovereign state, but for a long time an undeclared colony, yes a colony, of The Muscovy company based in London. Russia's rulers dependence of British masters date back to middle XVI century when this country got invaded by series of expeditions originated in London, first in 1555, landing in Archangelsk at the White Sea and infiltraiting into Moscow from the north. They were able so subject Russia's rulers to their power and made them docile puppets, who were murdered by their agents in case of disobedience. This subservience of Russia's rulers to their masters in London dated back from Ivan the Terrible until Stalin and was broken for a short time when Russians elected a Polish king's son Władysław as tsar to their throne in 1610, but lasted only 2 years and failed due to a blunder of his father. So, Napoleon should have rather help tsar Alexander liberate himself from dependence from the British web that costed his father Paul death being murdered by British agents and later in 1825 the same fate happened to Alexander. Tsar Paul tried to switch dependence from Britain into alliance with France and recreate large Poland allied with Russia and for that he got assasined, five years after Polish king Stanisław Poniatowski got poisoned in St.Petersburg by British/Prussian agents. .

To nic. To historia prawdziwa.

The lack of historical and military knowledge in these comments is shocking, waterloo wasn't British vs French, but a European coalition of the German states, Prussians, dutch and belgians against Napoleon, wellington was given overall command, the charge of the British heavy cavalry union brigade comprising 3 regiments, 1000 men, one regiment had battle experience, the other 2 did not, the charge was to disrupt the main French infantry attack, this it did successfully, mainly because the French didn't train to deploy into squares, 5 French infantry divisions were destroyed, over 4000 casualties and 2000 prisoners and 2 eagles captured, 2 British cavalry regiments started to withdraw but one, the least experienced, tried to continue the attack on the French infantry and artillery positions, this led to them becoming cut off from the rest of the brigade, they were then attacked by Bro's 4th lancers which included one squadron of the polish legion, about 225 men, the Scots greys received heavy casualties but managed to withdraw, the heavy cavalry were able to charge a further 5 times that day, the main French infantry assault was stopped.

Napoleon's bodyguard, composed of the Polish cavalry, are descendants of the Winged Hussaria, the best military formation in the 16th-17th centuries. The mercenaries, who signed contracts in the 17th century, promised themselves that they would fight against all but not the Polish hussars. The Battle of Kircholm in 1605 in which the Hussars under the command of Hetman Jan Karol Chodkiewicz, The Battle of Little Cannons, taught at the US West Point Military Academy as an example of a cavalry master maneuver. This battle, together with the 5 years later battle of Kluszyn (1610) and the no less legendary commander, Stanisław Żółkiewski, opened the way for Poland to capture Moscow and settle the Russian King as the Tsar of Russia. Tsar Szujski offered obeisances to the Polish King, and Jan Matejko immortalized it in the famous Polish painting - "Homage from Russia". That is why the Russian tsak hate Poland to this day. No less famous unit of cavalry, light cavalry, were the so-called Lisowczyki, it was the Polish SAS, Delta Force, Navy Seals and GROM on horses

Thanks Brother. This was not the first time Poles met British, or rather English on battlefield. During 1390-1393 Poles repelled several invasions from England combined with Teutonic Order. One was led by later king of England Henry the Lancaster. As they were not able to overpower Poland directly, they attacked Lithuania, as a weaker link first, here they met Polish knights and warriors who came to assist Lithuania. In a series of bloody battles England and Teutons lost 40 thousand of their own killed and pulled out emptyhanded. +

@@Lechoslaw8546 A link between our two countries, Henry was actually the brother of the portuguese queen Philippa of Lancaster, and his father John of Gaunt played a crucial role on the portuguese crisis of 1383-85 which culminated in the victory of the anglo-portuguese army over the franco-castilian army at the battle of Aljubarrota, another major defeat of the french cavalry following Poitiers and Crecy.

@@heldercosta515 -Thanks for an interesting remark. Henry IVth the Lancaster shows up as a very immoral person, a criminal and a puppet of London financiers, ready to commit any crime in order to gain the trone. He was involved in arrest and subsequent murder by starvation of his cousin and childhood playmate Richard II, who was a king of England. He participated in two invasions, by some called crusades, against Lithuania. First in 1390 and second 1392-1394, the second lasted two years. Both of them failed. The true purpose of these crusades were to colonize vast land of Lithuania, then largest country of Europe, as it encompassed present Lithuania, part of Latvia, whole Belarus, whole Ukraine and a part of Russia.The purpose of it was to turn inhabitants of these countries slaves, exploit them and plunder, all under a pretext of "christianization", this pretext was obviously a lie, as 90% of them were christians of the Eastern rite These lands were weakened by a period of Mongol invasion, from which they were just liberated, but England rulers together with Teutonic Order were bent on putting a new yoke on them. Luckily Poles came to rescue them just in time and voided this scenario.Croniclers estimate the combined forces of Teutonic Order, English invaders and local traitors at 70 thousand of which 40 thousand got killed by Poles and Lithuanians. Wikipedia is deliberately downplaying the scale of invasion, does not mention they 200 ships sailed from England with knights to Bay of Gdańsk and to Konigsberg. During a siege of Wilno a brother of king of Poland got killed, but the castle and fortress got defended. Had them failed there likely be no Poland today, also no Lithuania and no Russia. What made these aggressors mad was prince of Lithuania Władysław married Queen Jadwiga in 1386, which substantially consolidated these two countries strength. After battle of Grunwald 1410, a crushing defeat of western invaders, they dropped for good all plans to put their foot in there, instead 250 years later they started to colonize Muscovy /now Russia/ beginning with 1555. This brutal, undercover colonization, diguised behind many cover ups lasts until now.

@@swetoniuszkorda5737 ???

The Polish lancers and Napoleon's Polish legion, joined him to rebel against the Polish government, when he was on the March to Warsaw. After they helped him take the city, they marched back into line with the rest of the troops after they set ready for parade, to reorganise after the Battle. They had pledged their loyalty, and it would not waver, just because Warsaw had been liberated. Napoleon never forgot that. During his exile, many went with him, because they refused otherwise. They may have been a slightly rowdy bunch off the battlefield. But Napoleon noted, they would withstand, shelling, musket fire, anything, and then still charge at the enemy and get stuck in. His Polish legion would hold any position they were tasked with and they would have done so to a last man if asked. I should technicaly be biased, as an Irishman, saying that his Irish legion were the best. But not even they pledged such a strong loyalty.

In 1807, Napoleon created the 1st Cavalry Lancer Regiment of the Imperial Guard composed of Polish lancers. These lancers were not part of the troops of the Duchy of Warsaw, but were directly subordinate to the French command. After Napoleon's first fall, some of them voluntarily decided to go into exile with him to the island of Elba, creating the so-called "Squadron of Elba" under the command of Paweł Jerzmanowski. After Napoleon's return to France, the "Squadron of Elba", due to the disbandment of the 1st Regiment, was incorporated into the Dutch 2nd Light Cavalry Lancer Regiment of the Imperial Guard as the last Polish unit fighting alongside Napoleon. On June 18, 1815, during the Battle of Waterloo, the English, in order to stop the attack of the French, threw their elite Guards cavalry units into battle, the 1st "Household" brigade of General Edward Somerset (11 squadrons - a total of 1,319 men) and the 2nd "Union" brigade (9 squadrons - 1332 people) General William Ponsonby. General Somerset's brigade in a destructive charge crashed the French cuirassiers, while General Ponsonby's brigade attacked the 1st French Corps, scattering three divisions one by one and taking about 3,000 prisoners. At this point, Napoleon launched the Polish-Dutch 2nd Regiment of Light Cavalry Lancers of the Guard which swept the British dragoons brigades from the surface. Unfortunately for the Polish lancers, this did not mean victory in the battle. Interestingly, only a few Poles died near Waterloo - Łukasz Biernacki, Jan Nowak, Karol Pawłowski, Ignacy Rużyczko and Sylwester Zeleski, and Paweł Jerzmanowski himself was injured.

The Scots Greys did not face Polish lancers at Waterloo... and the battle itself resulted in a victory for the Allied forces that would herald an era of unchallenged British hegemonic dominance for over a century.

You'll never know because it never happened. British cavalry in one on one encounters throughout the Peninsular War had routinely defeated French cavalry but they were not as disciplined as French cavalry in pitched multi-faceted battles. Once they charged they basically kept charging and that was it. Such is what happened to the Scots Greys when they rampaged their way through a ton of French infantry and cavalry only to become totally exhausted and retreat in complete disorder.
@faeyrie4747
@faeyrie4747 7 жыл бұрын
Yes as you said will never know, after all the 1st Polish Light Cavalry Regiment of the Imperial Guard were only active between the years 1807 - 1814, so were not at Waterloo, unless of course you are thinking of the Red Lancers (2nd Regiment of Light Cavalry Lancers of the Imperial Guard) who were active between 1810-1815 and did feature at Waterloo, or maybe the Chevau-léger?
@doug6500
@doug6500 7 жыл бұрын
As far as I'm aware once the Scots Greys were in a complete disorder having made their charge they were harried back to the Anglo-Allied lines by French Cuirassiers and Lancers; there is never any explicit mention anywhere in either primary or historiographical text that the lancers were Polish. The title of this video is misleading and clearly made to to antagonise and galvanise some kind of patriotic fervour amongst Polish KZbinrs. I resent this given how many Polish people have made lives for themselves in Britain.
@faeyrie4747
@faeyrie4747 7 жыл бұрын
Actually I think that you will find the Polish lancers saw action in the Peninsular War (Vistula Legion) as well as in Waterloo (Second Light Cavalry Regiment of the Imperial Guard / Red Lancers, and throughout the Napoleonic wars.

I mean, I don’t know what they were expecting, if someone has a longer weapon then you, they’ll obviously have the reach advantage, lancers can beat any cavalry that don’t use firearms
@wizardapprenticeIV
@wizardapprenticeIV 2 жыл бұрын
a lance is only pointy at the end, if you can get past the shaft you are almost certain to beat him if you are using a sabre. Granted the lancers also had a sword but by the time they have dropped their lance and drawn their sabre they are likely to have been ran through with the guy who had the sword from the start. Lancers are great in a charge but not good in prolonged melee.

Unlike the Poles , the British didn't roll over and surrender within a few weeks of Hitler declaring war on them. Funny how England has won many wars, never been conquered for overa thousand years and Poland lost many wars and was conquered many times.
