Hey guys, thought I'd share something I thought was interesting about BANANA FLAVORED THINGS. In actuality, the flavoring used for banana candy or gum is REALLY accurate. But here's the caveat: it's an accurate representation of the flavor of a variant of bananas that no longer exists because of a fungus. The current version of bananas, the Cavendish variety, is resistant to that fungus BUT the flavor is more muted. In fact, all (or the vast, vast, VAST majority) currently grown bananas are genetically identical because they all came from a single plant. The problem is that if there's a fungus or a blight, it will threaten all bananas. Love the videos. Happy Christmas!

And here’s a bit of extra factoids, the original banana is NOT extinct! It is just no longer imported. To those wanting to try, it’s native to Southeast Asia though quite a bit more expensive compared to other native bananas. It’s called pisang ambon in Indonesia and the Philippines, pisang embun in Malaysia, and chek ambuong in Cambodia (I believe it’s grown in other SEA countries as well but don’t know the local names of it.)
