British Columbia Aviation Museum Vickers Viscount Things to see Part 13

Colin Bowley has written a short history and description of the Vickers Viscount, the first turboprop aircraft to see commercial service. Designed in 1948, the initial production aircraft flew in 1950, powered by four 1,990 hp Rolls-Royce Dart 525 turboprop engines. 445 Viscounts were built.
Trans Canada Airlines got its first Viscount on Dec. 6, 1954, and was the first airline in North America to use turboprops. By 1958, TCA had a fleet of 51 Viscounts, flying them for almost 20 years.
The museum’s Viscount came from Vancouver International Airport, delivered by barge to the Pat Bay seaplane base. As part of the restoration, the seats were reupholstered. To pay for this, the museum sold a seat to anyone willing pay $300, the cost per seat. When you go into the passenger cabin, look for the plaques with the names of the people who own the seats.
The Vickers Viscount is a four-engine medium-range turboprop airliner with a capacity of up to 74 passengers produced by the British manufacturer Vickers-Armstrongs.
The first and main production version Viscount Type 700 had a capacity of 32 passengers. The improved and stretched (+3ft 10in / 1,20m) variant Viscount Type 800 was able to carry 53 -70 passengers.
