FYI, what he showed as a walk-in closet is not what most Americans consider a walk-in. That's just a normal closet. A proper walk-in closet should have at least enough floorspace to lay down and sleep whenever you're fighting with your spouse, haha.

Definitely top sheet! Not only for hygienic reasons, but it is awesome on those nights if you get a little too hot with the blanket/comforter on, you can kick the blanket off and still have some insulation from the sheet. It makes it perfect, not too hot, not too cold.

In most places in the U.S.A., you can't legally sell a room in a house as a bedroom, unless it has a built-in closet, a door, and a window large enough to use it to escape the house in the case of an emergency.

Here in the US we can purchase bedding as sets or separate pieces. For example for my queen size bed I buy a sheet set which includes a fitted sheet that has elastic on the corners to keep in place on the mattress, a flat sheet, and two pillowcases.

On amazon its getting easier to buy just the top or just the bottom sheet. I like buying just the bottom because the bottom wears out faster, and i used to have to throw out perfectly good top sheets and buy a whole new set. but before Amazon, I am pretty sure it was hard to find just a bottom sheet. Also - college dorm mattresses were narrower than twins, and I think longer - you had to either find a special fitted sheet or just wrap a flat sheet around it, if your college didnt provide sheets

There are 2 types of closets in the US, a "walk in" which you can actually walk in to, often has light fixtures in them. More common is the other type called a "reach in closet" which is not deep enough for anyone to walk in but deep enough to hang your clothes within reach. Both usually have doors. As suggested by others, a wardrobe in a room is someone's attempt to get around the law and call a den (smaller than a living room with a door on it) type room a bedroom.

Box Springs do not usually go all the way to the floor- there’s still room underneath. I use mine for storing oversized books (atlases mostly) and it’s where my cats usually run to when they get scared by the doorbell (or when they get scared by one of our hardly noticeable earthquakes).

As Laurence addressed in one of his later videos, one of the main reasons we use top sheets in the US is because it's so much warmer here. In most of the southern half of the US it's common for people to use only a top sheet (or perhaps a top sheet and a thin blanket) during summer months. This is why you also encounter top sheets in other warm areas, such as southern Europe.

We’ve always had a hot water bottle in the house, although it wasn’t to keep ourselves warm in bed at night. We’d use it for cramps - legs (“growing pains” we’d call them when we were young) and then our “monthly” cramps when we got a little older. Wrapping the hot water bottle up in a hand towel and resting it on the lower abdomen helped to relieve a lot of the pain for a while. Now, heating pads are the “thing” now, but we’ve always stuck with what we know works.

My house has 2 large walk in closets. One is large enough to actually be a bedroom itself. It is the standard here in the USA to have large closets in builds from the 1990's to present, and they continue to be built larger and larger. I have to say that it is nice to have such incredible room for storage. in areas (large cities) where space is a premium, you may not have large closets, but you will still have a built in closet.

1) I live in a typical 1950s, 3-bedroom, 1-bathroom ranch house (all on one floor, excluding the basement). The two smaller bedrooms have built-in closets about 120 cm wide and 60 cm. The larger bedroom has one twice the width. Except for houses which have undergone renovations, walk-in closets are typically found only in larger, more expensive homes. 2) I imagine hot water bottles were more common in the U.S. when homes were unevenly heated by fireplaces or stoves.

Hopefully, this helps explain a couple of the points in the video in more detail for you. 1. The hot water bottle was something used in the "old" days before central HVAC. But most homes in the USA are equipped with this now. My mom grew up poor on a farm in North Carolina with no A/C and a small oil container for heat, that had to last all winter. They occasionally used this method in the 60s when she was young, but even then it was outdated. 2. A lot of single people in the USA have the larger bed sizes...full, queen, king. (Yes, king for single people). Therefore, our comforters/duvets are much bigger, making it difficult to clean as easily as a smaller size quilt. So therefore, the need for the top sheet. I usually wash my king sheet weekly at home, and take my king comforter/duvet to the laundry monthly since they have much bigger clothing washers than my personal one at the house. So every 4x I wash my sheet, I wash my comforter once.

Its interesting because in the US, a room needs to have a closet in order for it to count as a "bedroom" when selling/renting a property. In my state in the US, you can’t advertise a room as a “bedroom” if it doesn’t have a closet. My walk in closet is 4x larger than the one the video you are reacting to, and is considered small. A U.S. twin is also called a “single” here. It is also super unusual to see a super queen. We use heating pads or electric blankets instead of hot water bottles! A box spring is a “foundation” that is supposed to keep your mattress good for longer. I dislike a top sheet, and I love a duvet!

Only middle-class US homes built after about 1980 regularly had walk-in closets, and then only in the master bedroom. Regular middle class homes all do have closets in every bedroom, but they are the reach-in kind. 1950s homes I have lived in had 4 to 6 foot long closets with a single small door. Our 1970s house has two 6 ft long ones in the master bedroom, and all of the closets have larger, bi-fold doors. Upper middle class homes and mansions had walk-in closets much earlier. Some apartment buildings have nice walk-in closets in the master bedroom, but since there is no other place for storage, you may have to keep other belongings besides your clothing there. Real estate rules for listing a room as a bedroom usually stipulate that a bedroom must have both a window and a closet to qualify as a bedroom. Older homes, especially in historical districts, can get away with not having a closet, but they were standard here by the 1950s

It's very rare in the US to find a bedroom without at least one closet. Many realtors won't list a room as a bedroom if it doesn't have one. You could fit 2 people in a twin bed, but they're usually kid's beds and there were two in a bedroom, so they were called "twin" beds. I can't imagine not having what we call the "flat" sheet. They come in sets, flat, fitted and pillow cases. Sheets are just smoother, lighter and better feeling than blankets. Besides, sometimes it's too hot for a blanket or quilt, so you've got the sheet. A couple differences I learned about when my daughter was dating a guy from England were wallpaper. She said every house the went to while she was there had wallpaper. Fortunately, not many still do here. She also was amazed at how small kitchen appliances were and that the washer and dryer were in the kitchen! Parking was another difference. Her boyfriend had to park several streets away and walk home. She said bathrooms were very different there too. And her boyfriend couldn't believe I live alone in a 2,323 sq. ft. house and wish it was bigger.

My personal reason for top sheet is temperature control. Sometimes the quilt/blanket/comforter is just too warm, but nothing is too cool, so... you toss back the comforter and still have the top sheet to ward off a chill with the cool night breezes.

Top sheets are actually super comfy & not tight at all. The feeling of being between two sheets regardless of whatever blanket is on top feels really good. You will have to experience it for yourself lol. It also serves as a breathable, light blanket for when it's too hott for one.

Yes you can get 2 people in a twin bed. My daughter had a super single waterbed in the 90's which is just between a twin and a full size/double bed and slightly longer than a twin size. Having a top sheet is also preferred during the summer in places like here in Texas when it's hotter than Hades over a comforter, blanket or duvet because it's cooler if you want to be covered.

American here...Most children sleep on a twin size bed, my college dorm room had a twin xl size bed, but I since have a queen bed like most adults. A very tall, large guy or couple with a large bedroom might want a king size bed. King size bed is considered the best of course. My household and every household I know uses sheet sets; two pillow cases, bottom fitted sheet and top sheet. These are topped with a comforter, quilt or blanket(s). My household also has an electric blanket for each bed used during the winter...so bottom sheet, then top sheet, then electric blanket and topped with comforter. Sheet sets get washed each week, electric blanket never gets washed and comforter or blankets gets washed once a season or sooner as needed. Perfectly normal to have 2 sheet sets per bed; one on bed and one spare. It's also perfectly normal to give sheet sets as a gift to a new home owner or as a wedding gift.

In America, if it doesn't have a closet, it isn't a bedroom. We usually turn those into an office or spare room (game room, toy room, sewing room, craft room, etc). Even poor houses have closets in the bedrooms (surprisingly large closets in some cases). Perhaps the larger beds are due to the obesity issue in America? I hear we've got an issue with that compare to other countries. I do use a top sheet but only in the warmer months. It keeps the temperature cooler and keeps me from having to wash the comforter/duvet as often. In the winter, I use two blankets. One blanket is thick and padded (quilted comforter) and the other is a heavy top blanket to keep the padded blanket laying down. Less gaps for the cold air to get under the covers. I'm in the northern states though. We have hot summers and cold winters. Great video reaction! Love watching you both! ❤

Built in closets are seen in most NEW or newer houses. But many older houses do not have them. There are "singles" in beds in the US as well. As for top sheet.... always. Here is another great use of them.... in the times of the year where the temperature may be questionable, you can simply push the blanket/quilt/comforter/ etc. to the side and still have something covering you... but if you get cold, pull it back over you. We also often change the cloth used in the sheets. Silk or satin are great in the summer, but slippery.... cotton of various weights are standard all year round.... but we often use flannel sheets in the winter. They are super cozy and warm.

I've never heard it called a "top" sheet. We've always called it a flat sheet, as opposed to the fitted sheet. Comforters are a recent thing. Traditionally you would have a blanket and/or a quilt. You need a top sheet to keep from soiling your quilt. You wouldn't want to wash the quilt your grandmother made for you would you? That makes the fabric pucker up and look funny.

They don't sell box springs anymore because there are springs in the mattress. The box underneath is just air in order to bring the bed up to the level that would fit right using a traditional bed frame. When box springs were used they were even open and the mattress had no springs, as in having a deep depression in the mattress. Open springs were not good if you have a pet. You can't buy box springs anymore.

Such a fun reaction. Regarding built-in closets in the US - some states define a bedroom as a room that has a built-in closet. If it doesn’t have one (in those states) when you sell the house you cannot legally advertise that room as a bedroom. For example if you have 2 bedrooms with closets and one bedroom with no closet, that 3rd room will be advertised in sale/property tax documents as a “bonus room” or an “office”.

Grew up with a top sheet and have only recently abandoned it. Will use if have the duvet on the bed (no cover). But depending on the season, we may use a quilt or a throw as a blanket. It’s becoming popular, especially with young people, to share a bed but not the covers. Each person has their own blanket so you are not fighting for covers all night. We moved to a King size bed 15 years ago and I’ll never go down in size. You have so much personal space. You can also squeeze a small child in the middle in needed no problem. Can squeeze 2 in fact lol. His closet is SO small compared to others. Not all American closets are walk-ins. My house has 2 small walk ins, while one bedroom has a huge closet that is hidden with bi-fold doors.

In the US for Real Estate classification purposes a 'bedroom' must have these three things: 1. A physicals door 2. A window 3. A closet OR standalone wardrobe. Some regions go a step further saying the room must be at least a minimum square footage. If any of the above three are missing (usually #3) the room is not counted as a bedroom, but rather a "Den" or "Study" (no door).

Since we are talking bedrooms, bed sizes, I have this thought to interject .....(stay with me now) you find an empty Conestoga wagon (aka prairie schooner) along the Oregon Trail. Since this is something you have not seen before, you examine it. What becomes startling to find, with all the stories of all the things a family went west with, carried inside this wagon, is the size of the box of the wagon. The internal size of the box was ...equal to a queen size mattress!!! Imagine that!! The box capacity was "the queen size mattress and box spring, plus 2 feet of siding above that". That is the space to accommodate everything you are bringing and your sleeping space, too!! Your bed for the new place, all your belongings, all your food for the trip west, your cookware, your weapons to defend yourself, and powder and shot, your tools to build your new place (no realty companies yet), all of that, in that Conestoga box frame.

Have an American King bed because I'm American. Top sheet is used so our blankets and quilts or comforters don't need washing as much. I have to drive my comforter to a commercial laundry because of the size. My home washing machine isn't big enough to handle an over stuffed comforter Some people take their comforters to cleaners and have them cleaned. Personally I want to wash and dry it myself. Many Americans also have hand made quilts passed down from grandmothers and great grandmothers. Over washing would wear out old delicate fabric. In the summer it is refreshing to slide between the cool smooth sheets.
