Yeah Napoleon’s invasion of Russia was a catastrophe and resulted in his ultimate defeat but people often think that it was his ego that was behind it. In actuality, Napoleon did not underestimate Russia for one second and he realized that he could never hold it. His objective was never to occupy Russia. His massive 650,000 man army was intended to intimidate not only Russia but anybody else that dared to defy his Continental System. Napoleon only wanted a few quick battles and a decisive victory at the Russian border to bring Russia into the negotiating table and renew their alliance. However, Napoleon NEVER anticipated that Russia would force him to chase them deeper and deeper into Russian territory and use scorched earth tactics on him. That had NEVER been done before. And Napoleon continued to chase the Russians hoping for that big decisive victory that never came. That’s when the size of his army became his biggest enemy as they had an unbelievably difficult time feeding such a massive host. It was only when they were deep enough into Russia and Moscow was within reach that his objective became to capture Moscow. He hoped THAT would be his elusive decisive victory and the solution to his supply problems. Often when Napoleon captured a major city (like Vienna for example which Napoleon basically made his preferred summer destination), he would make the officials of the captured city responsible for housing and feeding his army. He hoped to do that with Moscow. He never in his wildest dreams anticipated that Moscow would be burnt to the ground upon his arrival. His greatest mistake was waiting so long for Alexander’s reply when he should have turned his army around immediately ahead of winter.

Napoleon didn't learn from history very well. If he did, he would know the story of Hannibal Barca. Hannibal was also invincible early on due to his tactical genius and Rome had no answer. Until Scipio learned all of Hannibal's tactics, came up with counter measures and then improved some. Napoleon's military innovation gave him a huge advantage, but he should've realized that his enemies would copy him and negate his huge advantage later on in his life. On an even battle field, Napoleon would still be favored, but there's a big difference in being a huge favorite (which would allow you to take on 3+ enemies in any of the Coalition Wars) and a slight favorite (now you can take on 1-2 enemies at best).

@@arcadion448 To be fair, It's not easy to realize that and fix it. Whether he did realize it or not, it doesn't matter because he couldn't do otherwise. His innovations were his main weapons against the enemies, drop them and he would be quite vulnerable since the enemies always outnumbered him. With the exception of the invasion of Russia, I think he did the best that he could. About huge and slight favorite...well at least he still could take on two and actually won most of the times.

Later after Alexander did his thing the Persian emperor offered him piece and half the Persian empire to which Alexander replied "why would I give you half my empire?" It was asked in the video if any generals compared to Napoleon in his era. Napoleon's own generals were quite extraordinary in themselves. Marshals Davout, Jean-Lannes, and Suchet in particular never lost a battle. Marshals Massena and Soult had countless victories in their own right. Well consideing this is 18th and 19th Century and British Empire is climbing over the top over his colonial rivals like crumbling Spanish Empire (in Americas) , British trade monopoly on several meta items in high demand (like sugar which British control all supply in Caribbean) and they are slowly taking over India and rarely found Indian goods from textile to spices , combined with excellent credit record of Bank of England , domestic borrowing with treasury bonds and very well regulated taxation in home islands and colonies , it is not suprising British had all the money in the world in 19th Century

As far as Russians having a different attitude towards risk; you're completely correct. I have known a lot of Russians in my life. I grew up in a city with a huge Eastern European population and I went went to school with a lot of Russians. I also work with a few Russians. I am also internet friends with a number of Russians. I have discussed history, society, politics, and almost anything you can think of with Russians. I have known Russians with political beliefs ranging from liberal, conservative, libertarian, Fascist (yes, really), and Communist. They all have had one thing in common; they have a very high tolerance for suffering and sacrifice. Remember that Russia has experienced devastating invasion roughly every 50 years for centuries. Invasions that killed millions each time they occurred. It's also a country with a history of bloody revolts and authoritarian (if not outright tyrannical) leaders. Every social and political change has either been the result of bloodshed, resulted in bloodshed, or coincided with bloodshed. The Russian attitude is basically, "I understand that I may have to kill or die in order to see the changes I want to see. It's the way of the world and if you can't accept that; leave the politics to the adults."

Besides his good tactics, one of the advantages France had at the start of the conflict was the fact that they had large numbers. As Napoleon said to Metternich "You cannot stop me. I can spend 30,000 men per month." During the revolution they had started to mobilize their population for war. This is something other monarchs didn't want to do so they used relatively small, good quality professional armies. Only once the prussians started mobilizing their people as well they stood a chance.

But there's a long list of mistakes he made before his demise. For exemple : Trusting Bernadotte in Sweden. I dunno how a British Napoleon would have fared. He greatly benefited from the French Revolution's innovations (like the corps system), and France arguably already had the best land army in Europe before he took control. Having the largest population in Europe (with Russia) helped his war effort. Maybe his genius would have helped colonisation for Britain, but considering the focus Britain had on the navy (for good reasons) no real conquest in Europe would have happened probably. On a side note, I think Britain's most important commander at the time was Nelson not Wellington. His naval victories were more decisive, protecting Britain from invasion. I think aside from those two the remaining best commanders of the era would be the Austrian general Charles and the French Marshal Davout. Imho.

Contrary to myth many more soldiers died during the summer advance into Russia (from heat, typhus and dysentery) then were lost in the winter retreat. Though the retreat was very brutal too with temperatures reaching -37°C by the end. To simplify how devastating the invasion was, of every 12 men that marched into Russian only 2 returned alive

But it's quite hard to have a real view of him, because there is less documentation about him (for most of his battles, we don't know much except what the legend said, and it's not really a neutral point of view). In the Muslim world, people like Soliman or Saladin are more known, because we have more historical information about them. We don't even know how many fights he did. They said 100, historian find less than 20, and some of them were described not very realistically. To be better known, it would need a great historian researched expedition in the Arabic peninsula, but the region is not very peaceful and the Islamic states don't really like history. So sadly it is unlikely we will never know much about him.

the uk got its money from loads of places, it has massive stakes in india and across asia by this point, then there’s the international trade network which would’ve been worth an outrageous amount of money as the uk was in the full swing of industrialisation at this point, it’s industrial production would’ve been pretty much unmatched in the world by this point with lots of steel, cotton, wool, coal, weapons and armaments etc - cities like manchester, birmingham, sheffield, leeds etc would’ve been refining outrageous amounts of raw materials pulled from across britain and the world, with port cities like liverpool, bristol and glasgow exporting these refined products across the world.

Then the odds of the average person to make it all the way to Moscow and back to Warsaw was 9.4 to 1. Meaning out of every 9-10 soldiers only 1 would see through the capturing of Moscow to the escape at Warsaw

The interference of the British and French navies with neutral American merchant shipping was what caused US President James Madison to declare war on Britain in 1812. An American force invaded Upper Canada (Ontario today) and burned the capitol Newark (Toronto today) to the ground. In retaliation a British force invaded the US, marched to Washington DC, and burned it to the ground. The reason the President's residence the Executive Mansion is today referred to as the White House is because the stone exterior of the building is painted white to hide the smoke damage from the British setting the building on fire.
