The sad part is that new highways and interstates bypassed a lot of the towns and businesses on the original Route 66. This caused a lot of them to fail. Route 66 is 2448 miles (3939.674 kilometers). You can drive Route 66 in as little as 8 days if you drive every day and do not see any of the sights. If you do some exploring, it takes about two weeks.

I'm younger, but here in Texas we've had the same with US 59 from Houston to Texarkana. It used to hit through so many small towns and now most are avoided. Which you lose some culture. But also you don't have to slow down to 25 mph every town to avoid leech tickets so

Route 66 originally ran from Chicago, Illinois, through Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas, New Mexico, and Arizona before terminating in Santa Monica in Los Angeles County, California, covering a total of 2,448 miles (3,940 km). I believe Laurence travelled the Illinois section of the highway. I think it was in Springfield on this trip he purchased the t-shirt of Abraham Lincoln wearing red glasses. Road trips are the best way to see Americana as long as you stay off the interstate highways. I recommend it to you two when you come to the USA to visit, even if it is just a day trip.

Route 66, "The Mother Road", stretched for 2,400 miles from "Chicago to L.A.", as Nat King Cole would tell you. It is now de-certified as an official U.S. highway. Many parts of it still exist and have become tourist attractions. It's route has been taken over, starting in Los Angeles, by Interstates 10, 15, 40, 44, and 55, ending in Chicago. In many places along I-40 the road that used to be Route 66 can be seen running along side it. Back in it's day it was the major east-west highway in America. During the Great Depression thousands upon thousands of migrants traveled to California to escape the Dust Bowl of the Midwest.

One of my favorite drives! You have to be prepared for a leisurely drive though. It is not an interstate, or in many places more than what you would consider a street. You go through a lot of country, but also a lot of small towns, so there are places where you drive highway speeds, and places where you are driving 25 miles per hour through towns. I like traveling that way. After you get out of Illinois, there is much more open country and in many places, there are signs for Historic Rt 66, and Rt 66 so that if you are going all the way across country, you have some options to shorten the trip. It takes days. If you, like me, like to stop and see things along the way, it would take a week or more to go from Illinois at the start of the road, to Santa Monica, CA. It is easy to get lost. Sometimes, there are poorly placed road signs that are ease to miss, so give Laurence and his wife some slack in getting a bit lost. Good memories! Peace
@boba9253
@boba9253 Жыл бұрын
At 4:47 you mentioned Lawrence getting lost on the route...well yes, because it is actually no longer an actual road! It remains as segments of the historic route, sometimes on the actual pavement, sometimes along the original alignment. But US 66 was replaced by Interstate back in the 60s, 70s, and 80s, and officially ceased to exist in 1985. So yes, Lawrence could easily lose the route driving it.

Rachel worked for Bloomingdale's, who is the rival to Tiffany & Co. Its a high end fashion and jewelry store. However, Tiffany's is the oldest high end store in America. They started in 1835. Everyone with a one dollar bill in their wallet has a Tiffany design in their possession. The Presidential Seal was designed by Tiffany & Co in the early 1920's (I think). Also, the trophy for the NFL was designed by Tiffany's. We love Tiffany's more than we do Bloomindale's here in America.

I live along a section of Route 66 in Missouri. When Interstate I-44 was constructed, the section of Route 66 near me became the South Service Road that runs alongside I-44. Historic Route 66 cuts through each of the towns, while I-44 bypassed them. Some of the old business that were active back in the day are still eking out a living with tourist, but many are closed now. As you drive along today, you see a bunch of dinners, motels and attractions that date back to the 60s or earlier, while the more modern stuff is built closer to the Interstate.

Springfield Illinois is the location of the only home that Abraham Lincoln owned and where he was living when he was elected president. Lincoln is originally from Kentucky but he called Springfield Illinois his home town. He met and courted his wife in Springfield and he is buried, with his wife and three of their four sons, at Oak Ridge Cemetery.

Route 66 is full of landmarks that define it like carhenge (a bunch of old Cadillacs put nose first into the ground that people just spray paint to create their marks), the teepee hotel (a motel with buildings made of concrete teepees), random towns that time forgot, and unfortunately a lot abandoned places. Route 66 used to be very popular on a road trip going from Chicago to Santa Monica pier in LA. Unfortunately the interstate highway system has made Route 66 completely obsolete and pretty much every town that wasn’t close to the interstate died over the span of like 5 years. Abandoned buildings just dot the American west anywhere close to Route 66 and the few towns still survive that are on that route. It’s a challenge for those people that stayed and often people move out as soon as they can to find a decent job and get away from how life is.

US 66 and US 40 were the main routes across America from the 30's until the 60's when the Interstates began nearing completion. They ran from town to town connecting the towns instead of bypassing them, so many small businesses thrived. Hello Interstates, Goodbye roadside attractions. I've been lucky enough to traverse long sections of both Routes. Eye opening what was once.

I live just a couple blocks from U.S. 30 in Cheyenne, WY but remember driving much of route 66 on vacations as a child. U.S. 30 better known as the Lincoln Highway was the first trans-continental highway built in the U.S. I have also been on U.S. 34 from Chicago, IL to Grandby, CO, and beyond, it is the highest continuous highway in the U.S. meaning that at the summit of Trail Ridge road in Rocky Mountian National Park the highway reaches an elevation of close to 13,000 feet above sea level.

It takes 2-3 weeks to travel the entire Route 66. It depends on how much you stop to look at things. The Lincoln attractions (home, museum, and tomb) in Springfield are very much worth taking time to visit. And a fun bit of trivia: the town of Lincoln, IL (founded in 1853) is the only place in the US named for Lincoln before he became President. He was a lawyer at the time and handled the legalities of founding the town. He had full knowledge of it being named after him and cooperated with the founders. He also christened the town with the juice if a watermelon.

route 66 was one of the most iconic roads in America, in the 50’s and 60’s, it was a huge following of vacationers and staying at hotels and visiting many interesting places of interest, such at largest ball of yarn, and many other places to vacation on, it was replaced later by highway 40, and most of the hotels, and vacation resorts have gone away. I also am now currently a huge fan of the tv series route 66, which starred Martin Milner and George Maharis, two very great looking young men, traveling in a chevrolete Corvette, going on many adventures along the way.

The reason The Simpsons is set in Springfield is that there is a Springfield in every state (or maybe almost every state). While it was based partly on Springfield, Oregon, the show deliberately obscures what state it’s in and it’s geography is not consistent across episodes. So it’s not specifically Illinois or any other state.

There's not much of it left. Most has been bypassed or just left ignored. It used to be called America's Main Street. It was built in a time before the interstate highway system was built. It was all two lane road that ran through every small town along the road. There are still small highways that run coast to coast. Route 20 starts in Maine and runs across the northern part of the country to Washington state. None of it is part of the interstate highway system. There are others but rt 30 runs just a few miles north of where I live.

The wife and I divided the trip down 66 into two trips. First we went halfway seeing all that was to see and we took as much of the old route as we could, going thru the old route and most of it was bypassed by 4 laners and Interstates but most of it was intact. The next year we did the other half we flew to Vegas, rented a car, went south to Oakman and drove the rest of the way. We live in Virginia, and when we got home, our neighbor took the car back to Vegas as a vacation trip for his family. We had all this planned out and it worked well. If you stop for all the sights, it will take a good week for each half at least, back then. There is a lot to see and our kids (3 boys, 17, 13, and 9) enjoyed the trips. That was years ago and the 9 year old is now in his 50's so I guess a lot of what we saw is now gone. The wife and I are now in our 80's and plan to make the trip again next year. It is a trip well worth taking although it can be a drag if you just try to drive straight through and don't rest. Whatever you do, if you take the trip, be sure to see Oatman, Arizona, it is near the end and it is a blast.

UK, if you choose to take normal two lane roads tip to tip of UK it be 19 hr 23 min (934 miles), but lets not forget you drive on to the euro tunnel on to the train or boat 40 mins and end up in France and could continue to drive turkey or a lot longer away. so from a drive you can get very rugged northern colder climate to the salt flats in turkey or if brave or mad enough drive to Singapore from uk or the other side Russia / china. At Eurotunnel we can only allow you to travel in a vehicle - be that your own or as part of a coach trip. so in theory you do not leave your car to get across water so uk road trip can be extended in to Europe or a lot more miles away so uk we are not restricted if we wanted a very long road trip we can. example a 35 min train ride you do not leave your car you could do this from Wild Orchid Guest House, Durine, Durness very north of uk to Soran, Iraq 67 hr (3,781 miles) well thats as far google will allow a route to be made, could add 1000's more miles to that

I was in the US Navy, I've driven across USA twice as I live in Virginia and was transferring to my first duty station after training. I had bought a used Rav4. I was on leave at home to see my folks. This was before I had GPS so I planned my route online, printed the route and drove with the help of an atlas road map. Each road would have signs with the logos for gas stations, motel, and hotels and how many miles to them. It took me five days to get to LA before taking a flight to Hawaii. These signs are paid by state and federal governments. The signs would also have signs for rest stops. The rest stops are free and have public rest rooms so you can spend the night. They were built to prevent accidents for tired drivers. After three and half years, I came back to land in LA instead of VA. It was more convenient to have the car carried to a port in Los Angeles rather than all the way to Virginia as I live in the western part of Virginia far from the ocean. This time it was during the winter with an approaching snow storm that could close down roads so I drove almost non-stop to get ahead of a coming snow storm. It took me almost two days.

Over the years I've traveled over lots of Route 66 from Missouri to California. There are a lot of things to see along the route, but also a lot of stops that made Route 66 memorable are gone. But it's totally worth the effort to search out the parts of the old routes (there are actually more than one old route in several places) as many of these places are very touristy. And there are a lot of books that are well worth reading about on people traveling Route 66 over the decades.

I used to drive across the USA 6 times a year. Coast to coast, & border to border. I was an avid 66'er. I used to pick it up in St. Louis area & go out to the west coast. If you drive 8hrs. a day, it'll take you a week to go from east coast to west coast, & that's by INTERSTATE/ FREEWAY. HIGHWAY, which Rt.66 is will take you longer. Thanks for sharing a great video.

Historic Route US-66 starts in downtown Chicago, IL and ends at the Santa Monica pier in California. You need around two or three weeks to complete Route 66 (If you want to spend time at attractions and not feel rushed (Two weeks is driving 175 miles per day or 282 kilometers per day, 3 weeks is 116 miles per day or 186 kilometers per day)). There is no perfect time to travel along Route 66. Due to its sheer size (It stretches 2,448 miles (3939.7 Kilometers) across two-thirds of the USA.), you will likely to experience some adverse weather conditions, whatever the month. Speed limits vary across Route 66 from 35mph (56kp) to 65mph (104kph), But is mostly limited to 55mph (88kph). Unfortunately, you can't drive the "entire" original Route 66, but you can still drive the sections that have been preserved, to which there are quite a few! Route 66 was decertified on June 27, 1985 and no longer exists as a funded U.S. Highway.

Driving distance from Chicago to Los Angeles California is 1965 miles, as a long haul truck driver, for us it takes about 3 days to get from Chicago to LA. That’s average speed of 57.8 miles per hour. Of course if you’re driving a small car with an average speed of 65 miles per hour then it’s faster.

As someone who has lived in central Illinois and knows Illinois history. I would definitely suggest the presidential museum of Lincoln, New Salem, and Dickson mound museum. In Lincoln, IL there is also a house you can visit that hosted president Lincoln when he came to Lincoln,IL. New Salem was a village in ye olden days. The site has many houses built with the same techniques and many ruins of old houses. Often it plays a venue for many people who recreate the old ways of living. Blacksmiths and candle makers are the ones I can think of off the top of my head. Also, has great a great gift shop. Dickson mound is a museum and archeological dig site. It shows the life Native Americans would have lived in the Illinois river valley. The presidential museum is a museum dedicated to the life of president Lincoln and the legacy he left behind. It's called Abraham Lincoln's presidential library and museum. There are often many events happening that are interesting if you are into history. There are plenty of gems outside the big cities if you look and ask around. If you're looking for a national park in Illinois look no further than the Shawnee national park. Absolutely gorgeous! Sorry for the long comment. I heard Laurence say New Salem and I immediately went back to my visits there and of the other places I had to go to learn the states history. Since, Laurence did not get to visit new Salem I thought I should give it a good description. Love the vids!❤

When I drove to Las Vegas from the state of Florida. It took me 25hrs straight without sleeping. It was when I got to the state of Arizona and onto route 666...The Devils Highway. It's now Route 66. Is when the fear of driving came upon me. The sign on the road said as I was entering the Arizona mountains read..."Now entering the Devils Loop." For about one and a half hours on the (Devils loop). All I kept doing was driving higher and higher into the Arizona mountains. There were no railings, and the ravines were 200ft deep and deeper. I was in a cold sweat and driving very slowly. The highways were slick, and the West just gone through a deep freeze and the conditions were slippery. It was the worst driving experience of my life. One I will never do again unless it's during the summer months.

Old historic Route 66 stretches from Chicago Illinois to Santa Monica in LA. It's not necessarily a direct route anymore. Due to modernization of new roads, highways, towns, etc. you may have to divert in some part to find it. Just look to the signs that mark it, Historic Route 66. It would take 28 hrs driving nonstop if you were a robot. lol
