Thanksgiving has so many people traveling because it's really all about family & friends. I grew up in Wyoming, & Thanksgiving was when family would come in from other parts of the state, Colorado, & Washington state to be with each other. And no matter how annoying we might find each other through the year, Thanksgiving all of the family would just enjoy each other's company. Even today when so much of my family is spread around & there are some crazy people in the family, I'm truly thankful thaat I have them in my life.

This was a sad Thanksgiving. My mom passed last year and it is just sad on the holidays. This was my first Thanksgiving since my mom passed. I’ve been depressed because her birthday was last week. I decided to volunteer at a church that was serving Thanksgiving dinner to the needy. It helped lift my spirits to help others. Then I went to have a delicious dinner with friends. I feel grateful to know I have people who love me.

Thanksgiving usually does not have breakfast, the dinner is so big everyone waits to eat then most sleep the rest of the day after the meal :) I am not joking at all! Also, you literally get up around 4 am to start cooking and that is to have the meal ready by noon.

My late M-I-L used to cook an extra turkey (sans stuffing) just for leftovers. Late Hubs & I don't like turkey, altho we will eat it. The cats ate very well the next day!

We woke up early and baked some pies made some stuffing got ready packed everything up drove an hour and a half to my parents house in a whole other state had a big ginormous dinner with several of my siblings cousins my parents, my children, packed everything up after we visited and spent time together everyone picked the leftovers they wanted, and then we once again drove an hour and a half back home to our home state that we live in and that was our beautiful Thanksgiving.

Made me think of the growing tradition in the US of having supper (evening meal) on Christmas Day at Chinese restaurants. It began as a thing among Jews who weren't celebrating Christmas (and Chinese who weren't either) but now I know a lot of Christians who do it too (after the big Christmas meal in early afternoon, they go to a Chinese place in the evening). And some of these Chinese restaurants even provide entertainment like comedy shows for Christmas evening diners.

Just got back from Thanksgiving dinner with my hubby's sister and her hubby and their 2 kids. Our 3 kids all live pretty far, so we drove 6 hours. Yes we watched parade and watched several football games, heard about world cup. Ate a turkey, smoked salmon, green bean casserole, cheesy potatoes, creamed cucumbers, roasted brushless sprouts, assorted pickled and fresh veggies, and cheesecake and apple pie. FULL.. the next day visited with daughter and her family at wild life Animal park and had fun with grandkids and ate a lit and walked it all off. My knee hurts, my feet hurt, I don't have any desire to eat anything for a while after the 6 hour drive home. But all worth it to see family. It's all about family.

For decades in Los Angeles, KTLA TV would run Twilight Zone episodes, back to back, all Thanksgiving day, and it became a true and profound tradition, watching creepy and scary supernatural parables in half hour format, while socializing (ideally) with friends and family, and eating a dinner made of as many kinds of food as can be gathered together; and the cooking of which is thought to be of Christmas dinner-level importance. Thanksgiving is the biggest ravel holiday in the U.S.. It's always a four day weekend, which gives people time to travel across the country to visit family, whereas Christmas could be in the middle of the week, and only a one day holiday for many people, meaning they have to be at work the next morning. Which does not leave time to travel thousands of miles.

The stats on traveling are because everyone goes to family, as well as many ppl make multiple family visits, such as going to both sides of the family all on one day. We usually have more flexibility of driving to family during the longer Christmas break since kids usually get two weeks off, in lieu of everyone on the roads in a 48 hour time frame. It's not uncommon for some of us to drive 2-3 hours, eat, visit and nap, to drive 2-3 hours back home.

We have a Harvest Festival service in our village church annually. Our very small school only has 14 children but they play a big part of the service. Afterwards the farmers’ wives used to provide a ‘harvest supper’ in the village Hall but this tradition has sadly now died out.

In the states Thanksgiving is always on the Thursday and this is usually closed on the Friday as well. So it always makes for a long weekend giving the opportunity to travel more. Whereas Christmas is always the 25th of December and can fall on any day of the week

I think it's easier for working folks to travel on Thanksgiving because it's always on a Thursday. One would get to the destination in time for dinner and then spend Friday thru Sunday there because most businesses would also give Friday off without counting it as a vacation day. Well, except shops. The day after Thanksgiving is a mad house for stores as people are shopping on Friday for big sales as stores will offer them to attract them for Christmas shoppers and the stores know the people are not working.

My mother passed this January and it wasnt quite the same but we started a couple of years ago renting out the local Church hall to have ours because we have between my kids and my 7 siblings around 70 grandchildren and great grandchildren as well as cousins and their children...I think last year there were around 100 of us...everyone brings some kind of dish or pie or desert and we have a couple of turkeys and a couple of hams and stuffing, mashed potatoes, gravey , green been casarole, sweet potatoes baked with marshmellows on top, seven layer salad, cranberry sauces of so many diferent kinds its hard to count, sweet corn, creamed peas, glazed carrots, hawaiian roles cornbread cassarole, maccaroni and cheese (always homemade-no box mixes allowed) beets, raw vegitable platters, cheese balls with crackers, and on and on and on...there is ALWAYS too much to eat and everyone takes home leftovers...my family all work at coal mines and they give Thursday and Friday off as holidays...so we basically have a four day weekend to recover. Its wonderful.

Typically, the reason families travel is to go visit either grandparents or elder aunts and uncles. Siblings really don't visit each other so much; they know they have to be at their parents' homes. And the rules are, you never ever ever quibble over who will host it next year, because you have to visit parents on both sides if you are married. When you finally get to host Thanksgiving, be ready for the invariable "Oh, this is her first turkey? God bless her heart. Did she buy a Butterball?" It is the one day you are judged on your ability to cook and cook big and cook much and store leftovers to eat the rest of the week, and your patience in doing all the 64,452 dishes and silverware and cooking pans yourself. Dad has one job and one job only, unless he is from Texas and deep fries the turkey, and that is to cut the turkey. Which he may only use the traditional knife and tong fork passed down 6 generations of men in his family. Grandpa is exclusively allowed on that day to sit and grumble about stock prices or cow prices or corn prices and how many times neighbor Joe has been ice fishing.

You brought-up a valid point about the number of viewers of your videos, versus the number of subscribers. I think the perception by many is that to be a subscriber to a channel, is the equivalent of a subscription to most anything else that has a cost associated with it. Like a subscription to a magazine, newspaper, etc. Subscribing to a KZbin channel is free, no cost involved. You can subscribe to "The Beesleys" free of charge, and decide if you want to be notified of new videos as they are posted. I had the same thought before I did some research and now subscribe to several channels that I enjoy. There is so much travel because this is a family holiday. For example, my mother had 3 brothers and 3 sisters. All but one was married and had two to three children each. When I was growing up in the 1960's and 70's, every Thanksgiving my mother and at least half of her siblings would get together at one of their houses. It changed from house to house each year. That would be our family (5), my Grandparents (2), plus at least 6 Aunts and Uncles and at least 7-8 cousins. The years that we all made it to the gathering, it would be 28 family plus some In-Laws, assorted High School friends, etc. It could be as many as 40 people. Considering the family was scattered from Ohio through North and South Carolina to Florida, it meant quite some travel, and all by car. They would start arriving in town on Wednesday before thanksgiving and it would last all weekend. There were never any quarrels and more love than you can imagine. The years it was held at my grandparents' house were the best. When I was in High School, they lived outside of Rutherfordton, NC on a small farm. My grandparents also owned the side of a small mountain up behind the farm. We had epic games of football or basketball and roamed the mountainside. We had more great food than you can imagine prepared by my mother, my grandmother, and my aunts who were all great cooks. The food was always served buffet style. This is why Thanksgiving means so much to so many in America. I know from talking to my friends and schoolmates that this type of Thanksgiving was had by many, many families, large and small. In fact, I still like Thanksgiving with family better than Christmas presents. You really should try to have a Thanksgiving like America one year.

Not in my family Thanksgiving and Christmas is about family. My family is so huge we get together for both holidays. In fact we have separate Thanksgivings during the week. This year one is on Thursday, and Saturday. Christmas it's the 23--Jan 7. Always something. Thanksgiving is a holiday the God said to celebrate. Giving thanks is a beautiful thing to celebrate.

Last year I had the best Thanksgiving leftover recipe. I chopped up the turkey, mixed in the dressing (cornbread, onion, celery, butter, sage and a bit of broth), green beans, and one leftover sweet potato (baked, not sweetened) chopped up and put it all in a pie crust poured the last of the gravy on it and put a second crust on top and baked. Best leftover meal ever. Cranberry sauce (berries and sugar cooked) on the side.

Are used to work at Minneapolis Saint Paul international Airport. I can absolutely attest that the busiest day is the Wednesday before Thanksgiving and the least busiest day in the year is Thanksgiving day itself. It is absolutely dead. I think the main reason why that’s the case with Thanksgiving instead of like with Christmas and stuff is because Thanksgiving really is the one day and people are traveling home to be with family for that one day and maybe for the weekend as well so they pretty much do go on Wednesday they’re not gonna fly in earlier than that. But with Christmas often people have more time off of work. Kids have two weeks off for Christmas so the holiday travel is a little bit more spread out and some might even dry because they have more time but if you’re going any significant distance for Thanksgiving you pretty much have to fly

I tried to buy some fresh herbs at the nearest grocery (20 miles), and they had stacks of MINT but nothing else. I drove to a nearby city (40 more miles) and found everything I needed except sage, I had to buy some bulk dried stuff instead. In addition to the herbs, I bought a lot of other produce for cooking (onions, garlic, etc) and some pies. Between all of that and the turkey itself, I am definitely in over $150 on the meal. Plus I have spent at least 3 hours doing prep cooking, and will spend all day tomorrow cooking before the family comes over at 5pm.

I live in new Jersey USA. Our Thanksgiving was yesterday. We had Turkey, mashed potatoes, homemade gravy, green beans casserole, homemade mac and cheese, stuffing, cranberry sauce ,corn and biscuits. Our coffee maker, toaster is black, little boring I know. No tea kettle, breadbox made of wood my dad made it he died in 1991. Thanksgiving, for my family anyway, is to give thanks that we're all together and to be grateful for what we have, and share a big nice meal together. Thanksgiving is NOT bigger than Christmas in the US. Christmas is definitely bigger, but Thanksgiving kicks off the holiday season.: Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year. It means Christmas is now coming! Black Friday, the day following Thanksgiving officially starts the Christmas season with deep discounts on all kinds of items to purchase for Christmas gifts. So, essentially, Thanksgiving stretches out the Christmas season. Some people actually have their Christmas trees up and decorated for Thanksgiving.

For most Americans, Thanksgiving is for extended family, and Christmas is usually immediately family. So that's why some people travel more for Thanksgiving than Christmas.

Getting lost in the pond can go both directions, James. By the way, I see that you really got a tight haircut, there; very clean-looking. Laurence left out corn 🌽, also indigenous to North America. Americans have traditionally, also, had mashed or whipped potatoes, as well as either turnips or rutabagas (either mashed or whipped), and we can't forget the apple 🍎 pie 🥧, and apple cider ( I know, that looks more like pumpkin.). It's funny that Chevrolet used to have a TV jingle in the '70s and '80s, which stated as American as "baseball, hotdogs, apple pie, and Chevrolet", even though the apple was not indigenous to North America. If people are more likely to travel for Thanksgiving, rather than Christmas, it's probably because gifts aren't involved - no hauling them there and home. Although, Christmas vacations leave more off-time for long-distance travel.

Thanksgiving, we travel to see family for a massive meal. This year I traveled 500+ miles (804+ km) just to see family on Thanksgiving. To be honest, Thanksgiving is really the start of the Holiday travel gauntlet, because then you have the Christmas season, which officially starts when Advent starts the Sunday after Thanksgiving. Usually, we also travel around Christmas too to celebrate, but never on christmas eve or christmas day. Those days are generally spent at home. But what ya'll would call Boxing day, we usually travel similar distances to see family again (usually to celebrate Christmas with family members we hadn't celebrated with yet) or to where ever we are celebrating New Years, that is if we have those days off of work (a lot of people don't). New Years, at least in the South, has another traditional feast similar to Thanksgiving, where the food symbolizes things you want to happen for you in the new year (Pork: staying healthy. Rice: finding love. Collard Greens or Spinach: getting/maintaining money/wealth. Black-eyed peas: general good luck. Cornbread: monetary good luck.)

We also travel so much for Thanksgiving vs Christmas, because the weather is still usually tolerable in the north. Xmas... much higher chance it could be an ice storm.
