Color blind ppl usually have gradations of color values, not just black and white, some even have hints of muted colors. They memorize over their lifetime what gradients tend to be what colors. When they put the glasses on, it truly is a different world for them. They didn't know what they were missing until they see through those lenses. It's a powerful experience.

I tried them as a colorblind person and they didn't work for me.

Right. Like a muted, greyish red to them is still red and they can distinguish the differences with other colors in comparison.

Fun Fact: People with a certain type of colorblindness (Red-Green) were used during WWII because they could more easily see things that were camouflaged. Upon my on research just now as I typed this... it appears to be true that people (typically men) with R/G colorblindness have a much greater ability to see things that would otherwise be "camouflaged".

I was fortunate to grow up with a blind grandfather. He was a piano tuner by trade and owned a music store. He was also a published author and poet. When I was very young we had a talk about colors because I was painting a poster for school. He said that he could remember colors but not very well as he was only 5 or 6 when he lost his sight. So I said I would teach him colors if he would teach me blind. So every time I was there I would bring him a color. Red was vibrant and hot like chili peppers that my dad loved. So he would taste it and remember. Then he would put a blindfold on me and have me count the steps to the sofa and not bump into anything on my way. Green was mint. 21 steps to the upstairs landing. Yellow was hot buttered corn on the cob. 11 steps from the door to the porch swing. And so it went till we moved away. To this day I can move through my house without any light at all and know where everything is.

EnChroma glasses are a real thing for colorblindness. There are hundreds of videos on youtube with people seeing color for the first time. The reason we know what they are seeing is real is because people are generally either green/red colorblind or blue/yellow. So they see other colors almost normally but red/green is muted (looks like brown tones) because they don't have adequate cones in the eye for red/green colors. So colors that have green or red in them are also muted, i.e., orange which is red and yellow looks new and purple which is red and blue look new with these glasses. These glasses amplify the red/green waves so they don't see red/green as a muted brown any longer, but more as their true nature. You can go down a rabbit hole watching videos of people putting on EnChroma glasses for the first time. These are life changing glasses and most everyone cries like a kid. The glasses are costly.

Think they just chose random color as an example. A person who has never seen any color wouldn't know what anything should be colored as, only what people would say it is. Obviously they would know some colors and what is and isn't the color, but for most it's been told to them all their life.

These colorblind glasses don't always work. There are various diseases associated with color blindness. I would also like to point out that people have brains and can use memory. Remember what color an object/thing is. You don't have to see something, you just need to know what color it is. All you have to do is learn that the grass is green even though you can't see the color green.

Hey, can I ask about Shakespeare? We read Shakespeare in high school. This was brought up with a French girl not understanding Old or Middle English at Mid-Evil Times over here. Forks are French, so Henry VIII ate with his hands, and spoons were for soup or watery foods. The Baird Poet is rich and and dripping with our shared language that teaches so much. Shakespeare translated is not helpful to anyone trying to understand English. It is still a beautiful story and well written play, but it isn’t English.

Since you asked…people with color blindness see colors, they are just distorted, in various ways. They know trees are green because they have heard it all their life, so when they see the real green, they can identify it.
