The ball drop is more exciting to us Americans because it’s sentimental tradition, dating back to 1907 (I had to look that one up!). I’m sure back then electric lights were quite novel! I’ve celebrated a handful of New Year’s Eves without watching the Ball drop, but it’s not quite the same. There’s just something about the atmosphere, starting the year off with Auld Land Syne and New York, New York.

I attended the ball drop shown in this video! It wasn't actually that bad temperature wise last year (around 1 degree C), and I'm really glad it wasn't crowded. As others have said, there are tons of performances all night but the trick is you cannot get there after 5 PM if you want to see anything really (especially in a normal year). I was lucky because of covid there was room in the little pens they put you in to sit down (which you usually cannot do). It's an experience for sure, but not one for the faint of heart. It's exhausting but the midnight moment is absolutely magical. Do it if you can by all means, but do your research first or you'll regret it.

I've never done this, but talking with some people from New York, this experience isn't worth it. You're packed in super tight, and once you're in the fenced in area, you're not allowed to leave, and then come back. You would have more fun just having a get together with family and friends at someone's house.

In Raleigh, North Carolina, they drop a brass acorn for their “First Night Raleigh” celebration. They had 80,000 attendees one year, and it’s believed they surpassed that this year. Last year’s drop had limited attendees but it was cool because they had like a 7 minute firework show

I'm sure bathrooms are difficult too especially if you've got a spot picked out. You have to go pretty early to get a good spot.

Happy ( nearly) New Year to you both, that video was just a small example of what goes on there... All the major tv networks, and several others have their own broadcast with celebrities and musicians/bands. Also there are major fireworks, but they are set off nearer to Central Park and are difficult to see from Times Square proper. The confetti is dropped from many of the higher buildings in the 'square', many of the broadcasts do televise for an hour or more after midnight and show just how fast the crowd disperses afterwards and how fast the clean up begins, it is pretty amazing to see... I have only once attempted to see it in person back in the early '90's, we made it to Broadway but about 7 or 8 blocks North of famous intersection, but still saw more people than ever before in my life... As soon as it turned 12:00 we could see the fireworks further North and we headed elsewhere. Still, something everyone should try to experience at least once. Best wishes in the New Year!!

Happy New Year! Every city has its own special way to celebrate, but we all look to New York and the Ball Drop to mark the beginning of the New Year, then most people turn to focusing on their own New Year. The ball used to be much bigger, and, as I recall from my childhood, used to come all the way down to the ground. Now it is just that smaller ball dropping from above the clock. I usually watch the CNN party. Anderson Cooper hosts, and it is, I think, a much more fun experience that whatever network that was. Still, I am glad you got to see it. Blessings for a wonderful New Year!

The "ball" was the polygonal sphere that descended the pole while lit up during the countdown. The ball drop in Times Square (NYC) is probably the most well known New Year celebration in the US. It gets televised nationwide, time delayed west of the Eastern time zone. Frank Sinatra's "New York, New York" is the signature song. Because of COVID, the crowd was much smaller in 2021. In previous years, it was standing room only for the locals and tourists. Many people have it as a "bucket list" activity. I haven't gone to NYC for this, but a friend of mine did. He spoke of how early you needed to arrive (Noon or earlier) to get a good spot. Other major cities in the US have their own ways of marking the end of the year and beginning of the new year. Las Vegas is reputed to have quite the display for New Year. Seattle has lights and fireworks from the Space Needle.

Can't do fireworks in the middle of Times Square because of all the buildings surrounding the area. The Confetti is coming from the buildings that surround Times Square. The Building that holds the ball is One Times Square. The Ball has been dropped there since the 20s. The only time they didnt do it was 1944-45 because of WWII and they had blackouts during the war. If you want to experience it. YOU NEED TO BE THERE at like the Crack of Dawn. Once 10am est hits. The gates open up to the area and GO FIND THAT SPOT. Once your in that spot, YOU CAN NOT LEAVE until after 12am on the New Year. So good luck on getting a bathroom break and grabbing food

That is the old New York Times newspaper building. Currently completely unoccupied but turned into a massive advertising space on the outside. The New York Times building is actually on newspaper row in the lower east side far away from there. Just time and rents change so they moved. The ball drops at a certain rate and is replaced every few years but mostly the panels are changed every year to replace the LED panels and put in real crystals that shimmer. The angle is so that when that ball taps bottom on the pole it disappears from view but it’s still there just it sits there for another year and fixed up again the next year. The building is checked a few months before to make sure it can handle weight. And the usual happens. Tradition you know.

This year 2022 its 50 about 20 miles outside NYC for me, for overcast, drizzling.. the Confetti comes from ppl in the buildings surrounding, and made by the city so its easily disappears with rain and such. the ball is an expensive ball, and drops from the top of the times square building.. Have just under an hour for me for new year! the times square/NYC ball drop seems so simple when seeing all the other countries/major cities celebrations! You have to get there early, no alcohol and no chairs, no umbrellas, no large bags, if you leave to go pee, you might not be able to be let back in.not worth it, TV makes it seems so much more special, and if you are there, I doubt you can see anything the TV is doing.
