Interesting fact. The USA women's football team raised an action against their Association about pay. It was all over the media in most western countries. Their claim, they were more successful than their male counterparts but would have earned more if they had the same contract conditions as the men. Unfortunately, the truth came to light that they turned down the same contract as the men for better guaranteed payments. Like, payments when injured. In other words they didn't need to play to be paid. They actually earned a higher percentage of the World Cup pot than the men would have, if they had won... the pot was just 100 times less. All due to revenue created. This is a non issue...

This all started with the U.S. Women's National Soccer Team. They had a choice between two contracts. One that gave them guaranteed money up front, healthcare, dental, and a host of goodies but very little in the way of performance bonuses. The other had no up front money, no healthcare, no goodies at all and was based solely on the team's performance. The women chose the former, the men's team chose the latter. The men ended up making more money. The women basically got paid whether they played or not and whether they won or not. The men only got paid if when they played and if they won. The women felt shafted and sued in federal court. They demanded to keep their contract and it's up front guaranteed money and all the bennies AND demanded that they be paid performance money and bonuses the way the men were. Our federal court system moves at a glacial pace, but this federal judge may have set a record for speed when he dismissed their case and basically told them to live with the decision they made and to get the hell out of his court.

There were 99% of facts in his speech and 1% jokes. Women just can't find a way to cooperate, not the way the men do. I find that fascinating. It probably has something to do with men being hunters and women gatherers and house/cave keepers in the far past. Men hunted together, they learned how to defend each other how to trust each other. Women probably envied each other for the amount of berries they were able to pick or having the best cave/home in the area, or probably even jealous of one's longer hair or bigger boobs or whatever - that probably made women less cooperative with each other. I don't know, perhaps an anthropologist/archaeologist could shed some more light on probable human behavior in prehistoric era.

I can’t comment about the WNBA since the only time I pay any attention to basketball, men or women, is maybe briefly during the Olympics, but the story when it comes to American soccer is much more complex and weird. The women’s National soccer team actually DID bring in slightly more revenue and thanks to having a different contract terms than the men (plus with how badly the US Men have been doing) they got paid more (both per game and overall) when you factor in the non-monetary benefits they negotiated for (they turned down the deal offered to the men in exchange for things like guaranteed salaries instead of performance based pay, medical insurance benefits, etc. - for good reasons at the time and in hindsight it turned out to be a good decision when COVID shut everything down). But yet rather than turning their great competitive results into a negotiating position for an even better contract next time, they instead sued the federation for gender based pay discrimination when they were getting compensated more! They also complained about World Cup prize money, but that is set by FIFA, not the federation, so apparently they sued the wrong group. The judge rightfully tossed their case. But they waged a media campaign alleging pay discrimination (where there was none) and got the federation to bow to the public backlash. In the resulting agreement one of the few things the women gave up was the subsides from the federation to the women’s league so it wouldn’t surprise me one bit if it now collapses in the next few years. I’ve been a fan of the USWNT for years, but I’m finding it hard to watch them now after all this. Instead of building the women’s game they are tearing down its future. Meanwhile the US men’s team continues to be awful on the pitch. At the club level the league structures continue to let us down (there’s currently a third relaunched incarnation of my “sorta local” team, this time at the third division, that are not doing good in their inaugural season and it’s hard to get behind after how the previous incarnations were squashed by off the field stuff). So as a longtime American soccer fan I’m basically disappointed in everything right now.
@mage14392 жыл бұрын
As I recall, when they complained, whoever sets the pay decided to pay them based on the same rules that govern how they pay the men, and that turned out to be less than they were already making.
@gregweatherup95962 жыл бұрын
@@mage1439 They were originally offered what was essentially* the same contract as the men (*= some slight unavoidable differences due to the different competition schedules, but in any aspects that mattered it was the same contract). During negotiations they turned it down and negotiated for a different contract terms. One of the issues I remember was medical insurance (the men get medical coverage from their various club team contracts whereas few, if any, of the women had medical insurance through their club contracts- I think only the ones who played abroad did). Another big issue was they negotiated for a guaranteed base salary instead of the men’s play for pay (akin to being salaried instead of working on commission). Along with various other smaller issues and substantial payments to the womens league. Those negotiations went amicably by all accounts I read at the time and it seemed like a good deal all around. During the contract covered period the women vastly outperformed the men. Then the lawsuit and public “equal pay” campaign started. Problem was when you look at total compensation (not just salary) the women got more (both overall and on a per game basis) and they complained about having a different contract when they had been offered the same contract as the men and turned it down, and they complained about prize money potential (which is set by FIFA not by USSF, but yet they were suing USSF not FIFA). It gets even worse when you compare the situation during COVID when the men got nothing from USSF and the women still had their base salary and full benefits. Their lawsuit was rightfully tossed but they were waging the battle in the court of public opinion rather than the courtroom were slogans and pressure are more important than facts. Even this new supposedly “equal” joint CBA for the men and women isn’t equal as the women still get some minor benefits that the men do not. The men did gain some things they weren’t even asking for, but they give up cash, and potentially a lot of cash. I’m still not sure the details of how the prize money splitting is going to work given the different timing of the mens and womens competitions (are the players in the off-year cycle of one team getting a share of the on-years team’s winnings or will they holdback, calculate, and distribute everything after the conclusion of both teams respective cycles?) but the only way the men don’t end up sending a lot of cash to the women is if the men don’t qualify for the World Cup- and guess when the 2 cycle contract was signed: just after the men qualified for the next WC, and the WC after that the US men qualify automatically as co-hosts. Meanwhile if the women continue to do good, yes, they’ll be sending some money to the men, but far less than they are getting from the men’s side. As I said, had they turned their on field performance into a strong negotiating position when negotiating their next CBA, I would be all for it. Instead they jumped straight into a lawsuit and then a misleading publicity campaign. And, back on topic, I don’t see how the womens league can survive this loss of subsidies from the federation so I think it’s going to hurt the future of the womens game in the US at just the time when womens leagues are growing in a few other countries (ie see the recent success of the English Womens team thanks in large part to the growth of the womens leagues in England and the rest of Europe). The US had a head start in womens sports thanks to Title IX and the like. While many other countries still put no support behind their womens teams, the few that do are going to quickly surpass our head start if we’re not building the support at the league level.

Imagine watching soccer played by toddlers. That's what the WNBA is to basketball.

The only thing that matters is putting asses in seats. If you don't put asses in seats, you don't get paid.

One of the reasons that men are paid more is that the NBA has been around for 50 more years than WNBA. Another is because more people watch mens games.

did you know the wnba has not turned a single profitable year in 25 years of existence? it is subsidized by the NBA as a tax write off. that is why they are not paid was much as the men, they dont generate a profit.

The WNBA has never made I profit. The NBA subsidizes the WNBA and pays for the league, both the salaries and the operations. They lose between $10,000,000 to $25,000,000 a year. So far they have lost almost $300,000,000 to date. On the other hand, the NBA makes between $4 billion to $8 billion in profit a year. That's somewhere between $112 billion - $224 billion in profit, for the men in the NBA, as opposed to the $300 million loss for the WNBA during the same period. By the way, no rules are preventing w♪men from playing in the NBA. All they have to do is go to one of the open tryouts when the teams have them.

My great niece played High School Basketball and until she played Varsity/Jr Varsity in 9th grade, the boys team outdrew the girls attendance. She changed that for next four years with sellouts almost every game home and away. You see she could play every position on the court. It was clear it was her the people came to see play because the team was a couple wins a season team without her. Until her senior year when she was joined by the coach’s daughter 6’3” guard that year they went 21-1 regular season and my great niece was playing with a ruptured lower disk in great pain. They still played before sellout crowds! Their final game a two point loss in the playoffs to an undefeated different county future champs! She shut out their Player Of the Year, high scoring guard even tho she was in great pain. That game was not only a sellout one hour before the game they turn away over 400 people at the door! After HS she went to a D1 college in NY and played for less people than her HS boys team played for(hundreds)!😳🏀

The thing about HS sports is that boys go to watch the girls play if they are hot :) It was very common in my HS for the girls to out sell to boys, we also had really hot chicks playing and our guys were not that good. People go to see HS sports if there is nothing else to see, or if they have a friend or relative to see.

Here's a decent analogy, I enjoy Gold Rush do those guys get paid as much as the Kardashians? No, because the views are less and there are far less cross marketing abilities. Do guys complain about it, no because it makes sense.

I think it's called meritocracy yeah that's what it's called you get paid for what you earn and it is a big conversation here in the United States like we don't have enough problems to worry about
