I am an American who has travel a lot overseas and lived there as well. You would not believe how many times I have met foreigners during my travels who thought Americans were morons. Some even sat in front of me and spoke horribly about Americans in their native language. They never even thought I could understand what they were saying. It wasn't until I began answering their questions in their native languages that they stopped badmouthing the US in my presence. This happen everywhere, but Europeans were the rudest--including some Brits.

Rudest people I encountered in Europe were in London. In Paris they were super nice but could have been saying annoying shit about us as I only know ""je m'appelle "Donna". The thing is my husband and I are super quiet and practically whisper at each other and I think that freaks them out, that we are american but not loud and are super polite and don't bother anyone around us.

Dude… America, Canada. New Zealand. Ireland and South Africa all call it Soccer. And notice how they’re ALL former “colonies” of the U.K.!? And American football is called that because it originated from rugby…where the ball is advanced by KICKING. Like, you didn’t know this? I live in Texas. I have never touched a gun in my life. (Okay, I had a sweet cap gun and many water guns when I was a kid...but not a real one.) My husband has never touched a real gun either. If people are walking around with guns, you rarely see it. They are concealing very well. I've only seen them on cops.

As a country we are far from perfect but no country is. We may be going through a rough patch right now but we will get through it and be stronger for it. Americans stick together. We are the dysfunctional family that doesn't always get along but in the end we are Americans ... And wouldn't have it any other way

Funny thing is, most Americans know more about the history of the country's they visit than the locals because we are taught world history and world events in every level of school after Kindergarten.

of all my friends and family, (I am 68 Years old ) I only have known a couple of people who carry a gun. It is rare to see a gun in public. And I outside of Detroit where we get a bad rap about guns. We go to the city all the time and i never see guns. I am also a gun owner but I never carry in public. I only use mine for sport.

in the south guns are more likely to be carried but not seen. I would say about 75 out of 100 in the south.

I don't understand how tourists visiting the US would have see any guns. Have lived here 60 years and never once saw a gun in the streets nor have I ever seen a gun being fired. Lived in NYC, California, North Carolina, Virginia, Florida, Maryland. People who have guns keep them locked away from children in their homes or take them to the bush to hunt. There are only perhaps half a dozen states where you can carry a weapon with you and for that need a carry permit. Now tourists may go to a shooting range to experience guns but they don't have to. I never have. My husband, son and son-in-law served in the military and all three were deployed to combat areas but they never brought Government weapons home.

Yeah I think they heard cars backfiring, not guns. Our cars are fucking obnoxious in this country. I have lived in Iowa, SF Bay Area, Miami, Seattle and Portland, OR and have only seen a gun once in 54 years.

Here in Florida, we can carry a gun concealed almost everywhere. I will bet the majority of the people over 21 are carrying a gun. I do not believe it is 85% but I do believe it is over 65%. Most of America is like Florida. NY, California, Illinois, Rhode Island and Massachusetts are the only states with lower gun ownership and lower number of armed people. Having said that, I must say that these states still have many armed people. Some states like Texas are open carry states, and that means the people do not need to conceal their guns at all. Many carry openly and many do not. Either way, most people will never have a problem in the US with guns as long as they are not criminals.

I’m in Florida. 25 out of a 100 carry a gun, including me, but not always “carry.” We leave it in the car, and strap the holster on when walking in certain places.

As an American, I can tell you that I don't know anyone who owns a gun. Nobody says Let me go to Target with my gun. I owned a gun briefly, but I always left it at home. I no longer have one. Out of 100 people, maybe one may have a gun(s). It also depends on where you live. In Texas more people own guns. Hunters own guns, some store owners may have guns, and more white men may own guns. Gun collectors have guns (and rifles). It is a historical reason, why people needed to own guns-way back then- in the old West. However, the laws were never updated to change for modern times. Therefore, the right to bear arms still remains.

We fly our flag because of what it represents. It represents every soldier who has died for that flag. We are taught young what our flag stands for. Nothing wrong with that at all. I come from a military family and was born and raised in an Army Base. Every male in my family has been Army. I will fly our flag until the day I die.

Any person who has never been to the U.S. does not have the space to comment on whether a stereotype is justified or not. Also, we are not the only country that refers to the game as "soccer." Research over rumors.

I am 55 and have lived in Louisiana, California, Alaska, North Carolina, Virginia, and Florida (my father was in the Marine Corps) and, excluding the police, the only time I ever saw a gun or heard one fired was the one and only time I went to a gun range with a group of coworkers for fun. I admit, I do know people that own guns and I have relatives that hunt, but I’ve never even seen their weapons.

I would love to see an average Britain identify and label all 50 US states! I can label and identify all Europeans countries, South American countries as well as most of Africa. I admit I don't do well with the Island nations, but hey, who does?

I lived in Chicago for 12 years. There is a neighborhood on the South side of the city that is full of gangs. They fight each other but they don’t harm the rest of the people in the area. And Chicago gets a bad rap for it.

What he should have said is "it isn't a crime to be patriotic, unless you are from America." And then BritPop is like 'no one else flies flags' after everyone accuses us of having no culture. THAT is part of our culture! So we have culture, but Europe doesn't like it, because Americans have America and they are stuck with Europe. I mean, all the best people immigrate to America. I think it is true.

You don’t pronounce your R in “hard”. You might think you do, but you’re using a non-rhotic R. This occurs usually after a vowel and toward the end of a word rather than the beginning. Part is paht, hard is hahd, over is ovah. His explanation of the origin of Soccer is correct. You can believe otherwise, but it doesn’t make it any less true. Many Europeans don’t like air conditioning. Italians and Germans in particular. Watch the Pasta Grammar channel’s recent video of the Italian parent’s first time in Costco.

Interesting and entertaining, but I think he missed the mark on several of them. Not sure where he got his information from. But I am American I lived in Germany for 5 years and traveled Europe. I also lived in South Korea for a year. I never heard anyone make fun of Americans over Air Conditioning. I teach concealed carry classes for licensing in the state of Florida. Many people do carry concealed firearms in the state, but most people I know do not. And BP1 I think you are spot on about the "over the top" description compared to England. I think generally speaking, the Brits are much more reserved, a bit more stoic and are more inclined to put emphasis on "proper or civilized" behavior than most Americans. Obviously, that's subjective and there are exceptions. That's just been my experience. Great reaction once again. Thanks for sharing.- Hawk

A lot of cars backfiring are mistaken for gun fire. A lot. I imagine that is what your friends are hearing in big cities. I never saw a gun until I was 52 and one was pointed at me by a kid (they caught him) but I don't feel unsafe where I live. I told someone it was like riding in cars for fifty years, event-free, and then there's an accident and you're like "never getting in a car again." I don't even think about what he did (he was interested in stealing my car and I wandered outside to feed some feral cats and he thought I was on to him, and my car was a fucking lemon and he could have had it, I hated it) when I go out to my yard. It was a fluke. Other than that, no I don't hear guns. Just super loud cars backfiring. And if the British citizens had had guns during WWII, that would have been a game changer. France... same deal. I'm not pro gun or anti gun, I'm "you can have a gun as long as you aren't a nut job and as long as it is kept in a safe place, oh yeah, and don't shoot people btw."

Most Americans don't carry guns on their person they can and do have them just like knives. Just like most Americans have lighters even though they don't smoke. Some don't carry cell phones they just don't want to be found or bothered.

Making fun of "DATA". How do you pronounce "DATA" from Star Trek? I have heat pumps which do A/C and heat. Maybe you don't see people carrying guns but many have a concealed and have many more than one. Soccer. Football they require you to use your feet called running with a ball down a field while trying to remain on your feet it is called Football because we use our feet to do so. We have Tackle, Flag, Soccer and Touch Football. Tackle is very abusive

I think your contentions with all of these are primarily self-referential. Every one of these myths have been said about America at one point or another. And yes, plenty of folks outside the US call it Soccer (notably from ex-UK colonies for some reason 🤔)
