It's strange that you say some of the answers given here might be considered distasteful in England. I always had the opposite impression. That people from the UK were less prudish than their Amercan cousins. Is it bc things are kept more proper on TV, but less so in general?

funny thing I said Tuck Driver before the guy did, and it definitely is high in actuality.... my brother's a trucker I've been over the road with him and the *parking lot lizards*(prostitutes) be knowing truckers are their main customers. Men who away from home for days at a time? their relationship status don't even matter cause if they single well they participating, and if they're not single they're away from their woman for days at a time the avg man isn't waiting. A little bit of logistics. Even though Washington D.C. is in the physical part of the U.S. it is not considered a US City. By its name part of DC, it is in the District of Columbia. However, I guess, since most people don't know this, they consider it as a US city and thus it appears on a list of answers.

That's not true. Yes, Washington is the name of the city located in the District of Columbia which is itself the territory designated as the federal seat of government for [& within,] the United States of America. It is not located within one of the states that are united to form the United States of America, but it is still a US city because "U.S." capitalized in that fashion it is an abbreviation for the name of the country. If it was meant literally as in a city within one of the united states that make up the US they probably wouldn't abbreviate those two words when meant like that, but if they did would have to lower-case.

The united states within the United States are the sub-national sovereigns & their associated territorial boundaries. That the nation was formed by the separate sovereign states uniting to become a singular national entity is the inspiration behind the name of the national government they chose. And no, San Juan, Puerto Rico & Charlotte Amalie, U.S. Virgin Islands are not US cities. However, they cities that are part of the colonial holdings of the US. But, as part of a colony it is not a part of the US itself, but it is ruled by the US. While the next bit isn't actually a part of the theoretical concept of whether Washington, D.C. is a US city or not [that is the stuff above & in my last comment,] it demonstrates that it is treated as such by the US government. So, if it wasn't a US city that would mean that the designated "seat of government" for the US is somehow not "in the US." Because that is what the District of Columbia is called in the legislation that created under the authority of the Constitution which gave Congress the power to create a "seat of government." Why would the US government designate their "seat of government" to be somewhere that wasn't actually a part of the US? It doesn't make sense. If it wasn't a US city why is anyone who is born there considered automatically to be a US citizen by birth? That only happens if someone is born within the US, or has had specific legislation passed which enacts a sort of collective naturalization on the people of a particular location [i.e. like Puerto Rico.] People born in Washington, D.C. have never needed explicit naturalization/citizenship granted in legislation to be US citizens. And finally, again, when it is capitalized "US" can only refer to the country called the United States of America. Now it is being shortened to just the US instead of USA, but it is still referencing the formal name of the nation. It *cannot* be referring to a description of the nation as the states which are united.

@@aaronhoy3410 Dude. United "States". 50 States. Washington D.C. is not a state. It is not part of the 50 states. So, to ME... the United States is ONLY the 50 states. Puerto Rico is not a state. Nor are the U.S. Virgin Islands. Nor is Washington D.C. They are U.S. protectorates, but not states. USA includes D.C., Puerto Rico, and the Virgin Islands. However, U.S. only means the 50 ---> STATES
