Ah your comment about the 58 pattern pouch jogged my memory, I was still in basic training in the build up to the gulf war. I do remember now having our water bottle pouches taken away to be used in Saudi /Kuwait. Ended up keeping my bottle in a kidney pouch instead. Not sure how widespread it was but this definitely happened at junior leaders regiment Royal Engineers in Dover

I was issued with 58 patterned and PLCE upto 2002. Like 58 pattern when PLCE came in we adapted it to what we liked . I used a drop belt and got my hands on extra utility pouches. To make up my belt rig with a few other additions an issue MoD machete for example. We would also cut a bit of our sleeping mat off to line the inside of the belt to prevent friction burns. The belt hoops on the rear of the yolk would be used to hold a dand bag. The initial issue didn't last long as it shone like a beacon when illuminated under IR light. The detachable side pouches on the bergen where basically useless that's why the "day sack" slowly replaced them.

Yes, having left in 1988 with 58 Pattern Webbing, these three videos have been an eye opener especially when buying Military Surplus pouches and yokes as I now know what fits where and how. Thank you.

You can actually get four shitbins on the yoke, One clip per rocket at the top, the two middle ones get one clip each at the bottom and your stability strap goes through the lower tabs on the inside. Loading is of course heavily dependant on weight distribution. I use that setup as a running pack which mounts above a lower rack of four rockets on a longback bergen. Got to love plce's modularity :-D Oh, and if you hack up a couple of spare yokes you can make removable extra padding for the shoulder straps, transfer to Bergen when wearing that, I also use them as treeprotectors when hammocking.

I left the army just as this was coming in, would be interesting to hear from veterans who were issued both this and 58 pattern, great vid as ever

Not sure if it was used this way by soldiers, but the loops and buckles at the bottom of the side pouches can also be used to carry a rolled poncho/ waterproof gear/ nbc suit, when the rocket pack was not being used in conjunction with webbing

Good point, where was the NBC suit/kit stored with this equipment?

you can also attach the douple side pouch directly to the main yoke, attaching through the center grab handle and 2 side slots next to it, then attaching the clips at the bottom to the belt or a pouch

I’ve seen a lot of the side pouch yokes lying around in surplus stores but never seen them built up or described in this detail. Thanks.

I have a British version of the large tri fold e tool, dated 1977.it has a nylon carrier,I've never been able to find anything out about it,it may be for the 75patt,but none of the books show it.

Can you use the side pouch yoke to replace the main yoke by directly clipping the ammunition and utility pouches into the buckles?

Oh, forgot to say the rolled up straps was usually done by rear eshelon types thinking it made them look jacked up,

Odd that, I saw loose straps rolled up and taped on 58 and PLCE through my 24 years by all arms and services- so much more sensible than flapping loose straps getting in the way or slipping loose

Whatever your waistline,yoú needed a large belt to make this set work,or you'd end up with the buckle under your arm.and the short back Bergen unless you were 6ft tall or over.

I've seen photos of soldiers doing a similarly non-official method of attaching commercial Berghaus side pouches to the yoke of '58 pattern webbing before, usually involving bungies. Which is probably what inspired the whole concept on PLCE.

The berghaus side pouches came with utility type straps to make them into a day sack as I recall.

@@haroldvonschwartzenstien3581 Yeah, different design to the PLCE ones though, it's basically just shoulder straps that attach to buckles, no yoke or anything

Think they made the connection method for bergen side pockets to the yoke over complicated they could have stuck with the design for the berghaus crusader side pockets.
@chaz8758

May depend on the era of Crusader and Roc - as our own purchased ones (83) were terrible really, could not be used anywhere else. The zip on to the sides of the bergan then zip together to make a (basic) patrol pack with the harness was good (until we actually got daysacks/patrol sacks in the 2000's - less said about the combat bra the better - but the assault vest was good)

its a bergen not rucksack. before doing your little programs you really need to consult veterans, the people that were on the ground, rather than just look at photos of the period. your lack of military experience is highlighted when you miss the minutia details.the taping up of tabs and straps is to make it more tactical not just to be tidy. bungee'ing kit is about it not rattling about and making noise over just keeping it tight to the body...all good fieldcraft techniques. soldiers preferred the 35l munro field pack or similar, it was far sturdier and could carry the clansman better. you want to play soldiers but you need to think like a soldier. being in the 'cadets' once, having a youtube channel and lots of funds to throw at your collecting does not make you a historian if you don't do your homework/research first. will you ever talk about hippo pads..?

The nomenclature used in the 90 patt fitting guide does in fact use the term rucksack, see pg 5 here: assets.publishing.service.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/423293/20150420-FOI2015_03859_PLCE_enclosure1.pdf Tho of course most serving personnel and veterans would call it a bergen

1. Photos of the period are literally of the people that were 'on the ground' so I don't really see any issue at all 2. Not everyone did it your way

The depth of information on all these videos is excellent. The people who invented webbing of all eras never carried the stuff for mile after effing mile,so someone explaining its design and some, maybe not all ways it was worn is welcome. Never saw a standard webbing set-up apart from basic, when nobody knew how to use it,so you thinking like a soldier comment is really irrelevant. My 58 pattern had foreign pouches . It's not history,it's info. The word Rucksack literally translates as Back bag. No Bergen's seen here.
