just a quick update. L&D is no longer at maxwell food center. They've opened up a bistro instead an the prices are close to 2x the price you see in this video and the serving is smaller. They no longer have any wow or worth factor that made them popular back in the days.

Thanks for the update! I guess I won't be heading down then. Sounds like they have become like one of the many gastro pubs out there.

Kindly note that they have ceased operations at Maxwell and are in the midst of moving to 7 Tanjong Pagar Plaza #01-108. They will be operating a modern British gastropub serving proper comfort food & proper cold beer.

All the sodium and grease from the English fry-up platter makes the dish look so-so...cant think of any occasion i'd ever pick it up, though the beef stew looks like a steal. Thank you for taking the bullet for us and giving the insightful analysis!

Why does food in Singapore taste so much better at hawker centers than food sold in shopping malls? Why does food in Singaporean shopping malls taste so bad?
@GregoryLeow
@GregoryLeow 6 жыл бұрын
Well not all shopping mall food is bad (in Food courts that is) but yes by and large, they are subpar. A big reason is because of rents. The rents are significantly higher than at Hawker centres so they can’t offer the same sort of value. The food court Operators are also by and large employed by food corporations so there’s no incentive to invest and build on it versus a Hawker stall where you are your own boss and you dictate your terms

Normally in an English breakfast, the English prefer unsmoked or smoked back bacon, which is thick-cut, and not too crispy. Streaky bacon is OK, but more for sandwiches I think. It would be nice with some black pudding as well, but that's more of a Northern English/Scottish thing-Singaporeans probably wouldn't like it.
@Your.Uncle.AngMoh
@Your.Uncle.AngMoh 5 жыл бұрын
Full English. Black pudding not got! This looks really interesting and will be a great change for most Singaporeans, or ang moh backpackers that may want a change from eating “Asian” food and don’t want to spend a day’s food budget on one meal in a pub-themed restaurant.

I kinda like your review.. You seems introducing the place with adequate information on its history and what they are known for which I couldn't find in most of review channel nowadays. Most channel do just jump into food and comment the taste & price, blah2.. I also realized in one of your video earlier where you did the review undercover day before reveal your present which impress me on your dedication and motivation doing honest food review. This channel should receive more followers. Good job. Keep up the good work.

Wow! Didn't realize that this still exists. I tend to avoid hawker western food... Looks quite British to me... Only difference would be portions and presentation in Britain would be fairly bigger... Yorkshire looks really nice... Actually, the rough mash is better imho... Too smooth and it will be a little like processed KFC mash. Usually the brits would cut this with as much as 30% butter by weight. I have eaten a version with about 50%... Like crack cocaine, I tell you... Luckily butter is so expensive now. :) Bacon is a little subjective... Actual bacon is quite salty. Preserved food after all. Traditionally, I think they do soak the bacon before slicing to get rid of most of the salt. I guess the proprietor used it straight from the pack as it is already pre-sliced. Maybe a 5 min soak would bring down the salt level. I noticed that the bacon looks different from the supermarket stuff though.... The way the edges are burnt.... I may be wrong, but the bacon looks to be better quality than the supermarket type.
@GregoryLeow
@GregoryLeow 6 жыл бұрын
Dunno lah, whenever I eat bacon in Australia or uk, it always tastes nicer due to lower salt levels. Yes soaking it would probably make it much tastier!

The bacon is probably so salty due to the way it is cooked. In UK, bacon is either grilled or pan fried, no salt is added during cooking. But glad you enjoyed the rest. As an ex pommie I would tend to keep away from such food in Singapore, except on special occasions.
@GregoryLeow
@GregoryLeow 6 жыл бұрын
Actually it isn’t. It’s fried with no added salt. It’s just that singapore has quite strict hygiene laws which means that cured meats have to be free of bacteria etc etc that’s why the salt level is so high (I am told)

Thanks - I just wondered about Smith's; I went past the one at Tanjong Katong a couple of years ago but was on my way elsewhere so didn't look closely. I was intrigued enough to look on the net at their menu - they were advertising a steak and guinness pie for somewhere around $20!! Hell, That's most of a whole day's food budget for me over there!
