I have one of the German army pocketknives and it does not look like because it does not have a hook or beak on the end, but it will open cans if you use it as you would normally use a Swiss Army Knife can opener. Sharpening the bevel on that lower front end (screwdriver) of what you think is only a bottle opener.

Some additional info. The German army outsourced their GAk to several companies, with a variety of quality as a result. The victorinox versions are usually considered the best. That British army knife is actually the Belgium army knife with the ABL marks but is otherwise identical in design and quality. The stainless version was first issued as the Burma/jungle knife for humid climates without the fid/marlin spike, and later stainless versions both with and without the spike were adopted as the new army clasp knife. All of this info is unreliably dredged from memory, so don’t take it as fact

MIL-TEC is a german company that makes replicas of things. They also do cheap German replicas, as the German surplus knives are generally in a rough condition. German military issued knives, but nothing to oil them or sharpen them with. They were constantly re-issued, until they pretty much were as useful as a rock.

After watching another video on British army clasp knives, yours may actually be Belgian. You have a raised level on the handle and ABL mark indicates Belgian origin. I saw a video on KZbin by Rifleman Moore.

The saw below the spanner is for fish flaking also. The little hole is used to bend wire and its used to hold the knife if your hunting small prey or fishing with it. You would put a cord (you used to get 4 days for not having cord in your kit) through it and close that blade and open the cutting blade , you then would attach the knife to a stick then you would use the cord winding it around the stick and knife and tie it to the ring at the end of the knife giving you a little spear to try to catch small fish, rodents etc.

The “nail puller thing ” you Called on the Spanish knife is actually for starting a fire with the flint rod,so know it won’t pull nails out.

Got lucky with the German knife, got the Victorinox made one and all that was wrong with it was the blade was (very) dull. Sharpened it in seconds and it's brilliant. As regards the years they were made, Victorinox was "84 to "86 and I'm lead to believe CCM was when Victorinox stopped making them but I'm not sure when to.

Thanks for that. Still thinking about a Victorinox one, but earlier German knife has had a lot of use recently and has been great. I still want a Victorinox....

Tin openers were invented a few years after tins were. They used to use chisels, that would be even messier!
