Thank you for doing one on Dean. Frank was always a musical narcissist, but didn’t have the persona that Dean had naturally. I knew Jerry Lewis to a degree, and he stated that Frank thought he was the King of Las Vegas-but Dean actually was, and was the only person who could tell Frank “no”. Dean’s relaxed style of Singing was actually his true character. He would go into a recording session, joke around, kick back, and just sing. He never let himself get worked up over anything-including his famous TV shows. Thank you again for putting Dean out there who may be just a bit too young to appreciate him!!

When I was a kid the quirky way that Dean held that cigarette charmed me, little did I know it was the result of busted up hands from boxing as a youth. We forget what tough lives these men and women who lived very difficult lives in the years of the depression and World War II before fame and fortune kissed them.

The biggest ever difference between a talking voice and a singing voice is Jim Nabors. Dean has a difference but in my opinion it is no contest between him and Jim Nabors. Dean was an enormous fan of the group The Mills Brothers. He patterned his singing style after theirs, most specifically after Harry Mills. You might find them interesting as well as in their early recordings they would "play" their own instruments. What I mean is it would sound as if there was a trombone or a trumpet playing but in reality, it would be them making the sounds. Their harmonies are also something to be envied.

Fantastic Entertainer, incredible vocal, and one of the greatest natural senses of timing. He was a family man, a great golfer, and drinking was part of his act. Mostly he drink apple juice. Al Torrieri had a Vegas band called the Vagabonds, he worked with Jackie Gleason. AL bought 165 Acres for $20,000 in 1950 in the Sonoma Valley. Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Tony Bennett, Sammy Davis jr., and Patsy Cline used to all come to the house and sit by the swimming pool. There was one wall with photographs of all of them. And downstairs there was a music room with a collection of instruments. No matter what you played they had one, Reeds, trumpet, Coronet, French horn, oboe, guitars, A beautiful vintage harp, keyboard, flute, violin, dobro, dulcimer, stand up bass, you name it they had it. They would all hang out, make Italian food, drink, and take turns doing a number. Just like a bunch of old friends that like to have a good time and play music. When you looked at the photograph wall it was a collection of eight by tens of all these famous entertainers from Vegas. They were all ladies and gentlemen who enjoyed each other's company, and had an elegant sense of style and grace, that is now something of a bygone era. The lifestyle wasn't an act it was like an unwritten code of conduct. This guy was a class act.

Eric -- I want to give you a bone-crushing hug for providing this marvelous story. Yes, the unwritten code of conduct. I lived in Vegas in the early 70's, and it was already starting to change -- but I still was able to see some absolutely stellar shows. And, downtown was still fun and a bit trashy ... or more than a bit ... with the door hucksters, etc., and 50-cent shrimp cocktails at the Four Queens. Dang I miss so much of the old times. With gratitude, Lynn in Albuquerque

Dean Martin was so at ease, so likable. He definitely added something to the Rat Pack. He held his own with Sinatra and Sammy Davis Jr., and just seemed so natural, a star that didn't act like a star. His acting was good. He played well in a drama like The Young Lions and was just so natural in westerns with John Wayne. His voice was distinctive and set him apart from crooners of that era like Sinatra, Mel Torme, Tony Bennett, and lesser talents like Vic Damone, Andy Williams, Perry Como.

A friend of mine told me such a sweet experience she had with Dean Martin when she was a young child. She had a friend that belonged to country club and would take her along as a guest most days one summer, so they could go to the swimming pool. She did not have money to buy drinks or snacks, but loved playing in the pool. Dean Martin was a member there and noticed she couldn’t buy herself treats like the other kids did. He told her “I sure would like to have an ice cream but don’t want to eat alone; would you please join me for an ice cream and keep me company?” They sat at the counter enjoying their ice cream and visiting. She said he did it every day for the rest of the summer. I heard many stories of his kindness.

I was first introduced to Dean Martin when I was a child and my mother always , loved him and as watched him, I could see why. He was multi talented, handsome, great actor, wonderful voice, and funny! I still remember one time when he was getting ready to sing;; there piano and the piano accompaniest was sitting in front of the piano, and Dean jumped on top of the piano and he laid on his side and then SLID across the top and as he did that, the piano collapsed to the floor with him on it! Of course it was a collapseable piano!! But the look on his face was priceless! He stood up, brushed himself off and said "Why didn't someone warn me how dangerous these things are? Well, I'll never do THAT again!" Everyone (including my mom and I) nearly died of laughter!! That is my first memory of "Dino"; You could probably find his TV shows on YT along with the episode when he made an entrance at the beginning of a program when he decided to slide down that fire station pole too, which was posted in a previous comment! He would do just about anything for a laugh! I don't think it was the writers' idea..it was his!! He was brilliant! When he passed away they broke the mold, there will never be anyone like him ever...Loved him! Thank you ,Fil for reminding me of a wonderful treasure we had in him and thank you for discovering him at your young age and your compliments toward him which he has always deserved!!!!!And especially, Mr Martin, thanks for the memories....RIP! According to Dean, in an interview, the glass and/or cigarette were essentially props, used to disguise his hands, which he thought ugly and embarrassing. When boxing in his youth, he neglected to wrap his hands, and as a result, his fingers do look a bit gnarled and twisted, when not holding something. I loved Dean - but then, everybody did. Frankly, I thought he was funnier in his way than Jerry. Dean had a great sense of humor and didn't take himself So Seriously.

Dean Martin and Elvis Presley had the most beautiful voices I've ever heard! I read that Dean didn't want a weekly TV show and kept turning them down. They finally asked him what it would take for him to do it. He told them he would not rehearse, he wanted to be spontaneous, he wanted to drink and smoke during the show, he wanted his guest to be a surprise to him, he wanted to be paid a lot of money, and other things I can't remember. They agreed and he had the best show at that time. I was a teen but I watched his show every week! I also watched Johnny Carson when I knew Dean would be on there. Also when Johnathan Winters was on.

That's the first thing I noticed. You couldn't expect that his talking voice, which wasn't a pleasant one on stage, could change so drastically when he sang. I think he did it on purpose to surprise you for his great singing quality, because in movies, his talking voice, sounds natural and pleasant.

Because I love goofy trivia..."Everybody Loves Somebody Sometime" with lyrics by Irving Taylor, who also wrote the lyrics to "Kookie, Kookie, Lend Me Your Comb" (performed by Edd Byrnes and Connie Stevens), which was featured on the TV detective show, '77 Sunset Strip'. The (fictional) address on Hollywood's Sunset Strip was next door to the real Dino's Lodge restaurant, owned by Dean Martin and partner Maury Samuels. 'Dino's Lodge' lasted for 20 years and was a backdrop for '77 Sunset Strip', with Dean occasionally appearing to greet Kookie and the detectives. Sorry, I can't help myself!

When I as a kid I bought the 45 thinking it would have the Mack-Livingston theme song but noo... 77 was a weird show - Kookie went on strike for more money - then he became a detective; they did an episode with no dialog and a Twilight Zone deserted town one..the last season was downright Sci Fi - everybody was gone except Efrem Zimbalist and it was a dark noir series, very strange no Dinos no nothing. 🎬

@Charles Taylor Exactly, I was about to make that same comment, but you beat me to it. It knocked A Hard Days Night out of the number one spot when it was released. It must have been very gratifying for Dino to get a number one record in the middle of the British Invasion/ Rock and Roll era Sinatra, a few years later, had a number one record when he teamed up with his daughter Nancy to record Something Stupid After having recorded all those great songs over the years it was actually Frank's only number one record But I love it all, Sinatra, Martin, and Rock and Roll

Oh man. My old Mom (90 years young) loves Deano. As a consequence I have a big ol' collection of Dean and the Rat Pack. Her Alexa wakes her in the morning to Dean Martin. Thanks for covering him. He really was a great performer, beyond his singing. My Dad may have been a Jazzman, but it was Dean Martin that Mom pined for. Thanks Fil. A great hit as usual.

Dean was also a barber. His father was a barber and owned a shop in Stubenville OH. He taught Dean to cut hair before he started his singing career. His Dad, always practical, told him that if his singing didn't pan out, he would still have a career because everyone needed their hair cut. Dean's son Ricci even said that growing up, Dean would give him and his older brother haircuts, and that his dad was quite good at it.

Elvis was massively influenced by Dean Martin- before he was a recording artist himself when he did those recordings for his mother that led him to being "discovered" at Sun Records by Marion Keisker who suggested that Sam Phillips checked him out. Elvis described Dean as "The King of Cool."

According to his biography, his daughter Deanna stated that he liked to eat with the family. Then he'd go to bed and have a drink or two while watching a movie on tv. He always went to bed early so he could go golfing early in the morning. And by the way, when Dean had his variety show, he only worked one day. He did not like to rehearse. So that one day, he would tape the show and spend the other 6 days on the golf course, and spending the rest of the day with the family.

Lovely research you've done on the inimitable Dean Martin, Fil - compliments. I share same June 7th birthday as he (36 year difference) and was told that my "Memories are made of this" kareoke effort was the best. If I may disagree: he's talking and singing voices are pretty much similar. But otherwise, loved your presentation.

Listening to Dean Martin makes you happy. You can hear his sense of of fun and love of life in his tone. Listening to Sinatra...not so much. He sounds much more aggressive and sings more matter-of-factly. Sinatra never seems to be enjoying himself. He sounds tense. Dean Martin is always at ease and poised, rolling with it. I would have loved to see Dino perform live.

I still love their voices to this day. Dean had such an easy, relaxed style on stage...and not afraid to laugh at himself...endearing. 🙂🧡
