This song harkens back to the tumultuous 60s. Back when we protested injustices in the street, not on Twitter. I've always felt the 60s and into the mid to late 70s was the golden age of rock and roll music. Just SO much natural talent, without gimmicks, without autotune.

One of the best folk trios ever. Amazing blending of voices. Subtle instruments. Gentle dynamics. My first experience with them was a 45rpm record. Still one of my favorite songs of all time. Puff the Magic Dragon.

Doesn't get more real and authentic than this. No props or gimmicks. Three part harmony and two guitars. Doesn't matter what genre of music you like or identify with (Rush and Pink Floyd are my main cups of tea), this is pure talent and deserves the ultimate respect. Beautiful. Well, at the time, their version of Dylan's songs were considered, by serious music fans, as being far too sweet and nice. For example, listen to their cover of Bob's "The Times they are a Changin" where they really "softened" Bob's scathing attack on the older generation.

Some of the most iconic folk music ever recorded. This is a special era in music and the talent level is off the chart. Many have already commented eloquently and I feel exactly the same way about it. Fil is bringing many of these classics out of the closet and bringing it for new generations to discover and appreciate. Yet another brilliant analysis teaching us how sometimes less is more, and why.

I love your video,s .A 5 year old has no clue what contralto and tenor mean.The ability to interpret the meaning of the song is also still in its infancy.Yet somehow these 60,s songs carried so much weight ,so much beauty ,that for so many 60,s kids, it felt like it was a virtue to "want" to understand more about the songs that moved us.And we were seldom disappointed.The more we "knew" about a song,and its origins/meanings, the more special it became.54 years later Wings Of Pegasus comes along and adds his wonderful, professional perspective,along with some nice trivia to those songs .In a certain sense bringing these gems out of the closet ,down from the attic, for a new generation to enjoy..Thank you

My mother was good friends with Peter, Paul, and Mary when I was a young boy in the 60s and Seventys. These people would come two our home once in a while to attend private cookouts for them. I really didn't understand who they were untill my teenage years. They were nice to us childern, but then we were made to go play so that the adults could talk. Weird, but true.

The song was written by Peter Yarrow and Leonard Lipton, with their inspiration coming from the Ogden Nash poem entitled, “Really-O Truly-O Dragon.” The poem was said to be a “coming of age” story

I had Mary in my taxi, I think in the late 70s. I was taking her home. This was in Manhattan, New York City. Another time I saw her while my lady and I were waiting to go in to see a movie , in the lobby. She was with a little girl, who I later found out was her granddaughter , having seen her in a TV special called Peter, Paul and Mommy. The audience were mostly kids and their moms. Mary's granddaughter came out and Mary sang her a song. It's a wonderful show . PP&M were great .

My sweet dad took my little brother and me to see PP&M for our first real concert experience. It was right about this time and we loved every minute! They were not just sublime musically, they were VERY funny between songs. Paul Stookey used his voice to simulate a Volkswagen race! We laughed til we cried. I saw them live in the mid 1980s. I wasn't particularly a fan, but a friend invited me to go because he had a spare ticket. It was an absolutley amazing show. Peter and Paul both did solo segments. Peter Yarrow's set was perhaps the best solo performance I've ever seen live.

I heard them in concert in Atlanta when I was in high school, probably 1965. I remember their incredible voices and the blue, pink and purple lights bathing them that dazzled Mary's immaculate hair. They stayed on the stage after the concert and talked to anyone who came up (me!). It was a magical night!

Such beautiful harmonization and chemistry between the three of them. And yes, it must have been quite exciting to see Mary stroll by the salon! Such a great old classic, a beautiful melody and powerful lyrics. And the harmony is brilliant, Peter, Paul and Mary’s voices made magic together. It’s hard to avoid joining in and singing along. They are definitely iconic, both as folk singers and as activists....they used their music for both entertainment and for expressing their opinions on important issues. I would love to see folk music make a comeback. Thanks Fil for bringing back great memories.

As a fellow alto, I also loved to sing along with Peter, Paul and Mary (on the radio or records etc). Singing Alto in school choir almost always meant singing the harmonies, singing with Mary allowed me to enjoy the melody. To be clear, I value having learned to sing harmony as harmony gives music more depth and body… but sometimes you just want to be the voice/section that shines.

For instance, that violinist in the song "Isis" made the song so good, but without that violin, the feel of the song is something else entirely. There are so many other examples of this.

Do-wop music was done by kids in school or on the corner. Country was born of the same DNA. Those and this genre came from social interaction. Humans are the only organisms that perceive music emotionally, in terms of cadence, harmony, rhythm, timbre, ambience, etc. We perceive the entirety of it. It lights our brains up like christmas trees . It plays us. We are blessed by it. You guys and gals are great.

Back when I was in the 8th grade in our music class we were given an assignment to create a slideshow from a song we picked from a list. I chose this one for my group and it was an excellent choice it turns out. The slides we had access to depicted everything they were singing about. The teacher wound up showing it to the whole school. I love the folk music of that era.

Take a look at a song they did called "Bird on the Wire". There are so many of theirs that "speak". Paul Stookey recorded an exceptional solo albumn (not sure it's title) that's pure comedic/tongue in cheek genius. Just a side note I've been a fan since first hearing them when I was 6yo, when we first got fb my daughter looked up Mary's page and sent her a letter for me and herself. Mary replied promptly with a beautiful response and gratitude, this was 4 weeks before she passed on so sick as she was she held her Grace and Love for others

I got to meet Peter Yarrow at a NAEYC conference where he was showcasing Don’t Laugh at Me, his (free) anti bullying curriculum. We all sang along with him on Puff the Magic Dragon. He hugged and gave a kiss on the cheek to everyone who wanted to meet him after. Absolutely engaging as a speaker too. One of my most tender memories.

Heard Bob's version first, which was earth-shattering to my ears. Peter, Paul and Mary, however put their own spin to anything they sang, the harmonic blend of their voices perfect as you described Fil. The 60's exploded with so many genres of music. That some AM radio stations had room for all of it at the same time was astounding! imagine a time when you had to have talent and ability to be played on the radio. and yes i know that there are many talented musicians out there playing every night but it seems more and more that the SHOW and the BUSINESS is more important than the music. As for Peter Paul and Mary, two things always come to mind. One is listening to Puff the Magic Dragon on the radio as a kid long before we owned a TV (and no its not a drug song, Paul can be found in enough interviews talking about the inspiration for the song) and the second is the story behind Paul writing the Wedding Song and to this day not taking a cent of royalties ... he believes that the song was given to him by divine inspiration and therefore not his and so has donated every cent to a public foundation to help those in need.

An incredible performance, made all the more incredible because it was done live. What two-guitars, three-voices group could match this? Peter, Paul, and Mary were a one-time-and-only-one-time phenomenon. A century from now that will still be true. They still get my eyes a little misty and they still make me think that there is hope. I saw them sing this in concert. They introduced it by saying, "The next song asks several questions," and the audience started cheering. In the studio they were perfectionists, which did not always sit well with some folk music fans who preferred a more spontaneous, casual sound. Yet Dylan liked them, as he should, since they popularized his music. I met Noel Paul Stookey in NH and he is a very friendly guy, no surprise. The unsung hero of the group was their bass player. You're absolutely right about the "tiny details", which are well-thought-out.

We are so lucky to have grown up with the most inventive music ever made and Peter Paul and Mary were a prelude of what we were about to be bombarded with. These three were responsible for all of us to appreciate what talent was about to fill our entire lives. The journey is often more the adventure then the destination and that holds to for this wonderful trio we were so blessed to have in our lives.

Peter Paul and Mary were my first favorite group when I was a young kid. Folk groups and singers got me to enjoy music. Other groups were The Limelighters, New Christy Minstrels, The Kingston Trio. Another group you should analyses are The Seekers.

A studio engineer friend of mine who does a lot of digital remixes of older songs and who is on a first name basis with many of the biggest names in rock, folk and jazz, (he's well known, if not famous,) invited me to sit and listen while he remixed an old Peter, Paul, and Mary live concert. He did it in his studio through a 5 speaker system worth as much as a house, so it sounded spooky good. As I sat very still and quietly, (he did NOT usually invite anyone in while he was working,) I actually got goose-bumps more than once. About all my friend said during the entire remix and digitization process was, "My God, they were good. They were mixing this at the microphones."

I heard them live at the end of their career (in Melbourne) and they were really beautiful singers. Lovely lovely tone. Quite a similar "vibe" to The Seekers with the gorgeous Judith Durham.
