In 1977 my first concert was Queen with opening act Thin Lizzy. Just turned 14 and just started playing guitar. Other than Boys Are Back knew nothing else by Lizzy but was well aware of Queen. Our seats were about 8 rows back from the stage, on the left. Right in my line of vision is this man who absolutely torched not only Lizzys set but for me completely overshadowed anything Freddie and the boys did. That man was Gary Moore, filling in for Brian Robertson. He was then and is still now my main guitar inspiration. He could play a night full of mistakes and it would still be incredible. I had not seen this video but was aware of the cover. Folks,, this guy will never get the recognition he deserves because he wasn’t popular and not in MTV, but he was absolutely the best.. you pick the genre and he’d kill it. This video like others has that classic Gary element of sailing out into a calm ocean and then being caught in the chaos & fury of an ocean storm then brought gently back in and returned safely and awed by nature’s fury. Nobody did this better. He was a true master in every sense and played circles around all of his contemporaries. There’s something about that Irish rage and emotion that gives his music and Rory Gallaghers material the same sort of emotional element. He has left us but these performances are totally brilliant.

I actually cryed my eyes out for a while when I heard Gary had died, it was like a bareavement in my family. I grew up with Gary's music day in day out, watched him live several times, and tried to play his stuff. I still sorely miss wating to buy his latest release and hearing him melt my face of or move me to tears again. That was and still is the magic he had, he could take you through the full gamit of your emotions in a few minutes with just one song. "THESE ARE MY MEMORIES... COMING HOME." R.I.P.

@@paulkelcher824 sure the guitar has some unmistakable color, but it feels like a baseball bat. When Peter had it he would wrap it in clothes that were scattered around in the car boot (trunk in yank). Peter didn't have time or room for a suitcase or guitar case. The top hats came from Easterling Music in Vidalia Louisiana, they wouldn't fit the pot post on my Fender Music Master, when I saw the knobs needed to be replaced, I had them in my jacket pocket and said, these don't match, but they beat the ones you have. Peter replaced the worst one and tried to give back the other, after I assured him I had no use for it, he put it in his pocket. Peter had some very heavy guage strings on that LP that made the rest of us Ernie Ball Super-Slinky fans wince at the first touch. As I grew up and had a few LP's of my own I used 11's because of the 24&3/4" scale, but compared to what Peter was using on his 59 mine felt like light guage. Billy Bob Thornton told me that Gary Moore ended up with Pete's 59 and other than the knobs and neck pickup you couldn't tell it was the same guitar after Gary cleaned the years of sweat and funk off of it, crusty falls dismally short trying to describe how nasty that guitar was when Peter Green had it. It was nastier than any of the Roy Galeger or Rusty Burns guitars, and that's saying a lot. RIP Peter, Gary, Rusty, and Roy. (I never met Roy).

Saw Gary play this one on the Still Got The Blues tour at Newcastle City Hall. During those quiet sections, you could hear a pin drop. Even my girlfriend at the time (who went to the gig under protest, being a Stock Aitken Waterman fan) said afterwards... "I had no idea music could be that powerful... it's not just about catchy tunes is it?" My reply? "One more of us, one less of them!"

I heard quite a bit of Gary,playing,but this ,displays ,so many different sounds ,feels ,just a tour de force ,when he throws his head back, its just so visceral ,a real reminder of his versatility,and raw feel, it really does sound like a vocalist ,with such heart rending bends ,and blistering speed runs,if this doesnt affect you,check your pulse.

Your comment re how Moore was able ,with ease, to play at speed at then slam the brakes on and go into pure melodic Santanaesque mode playing slightly behind the beat and then capture your heart with a sustained vibrato note….100 % spot on. Amazing musician .

IMHO, Moore is faithful to the spirit of Roy's Opus (which had a bit more pitch harmonics), but does such a superb cover, I think he owns it now! Love Moore's phrasing, technique, emotional intensity, and sensitive dynamics!🙂

I read an article on Gary wherein he stated "one summer" he heard a Roy tune and decided to look into Buchanan more...and discover how he plays ("which isnt easy to play"..per Gary) so he spent that summer learning all he could....but played (as Roy constantly emphasized) "my way!".

Leroy "Roy" Buchanan, an early guitar virtuoso, who wrote "The Messiah Will Come Again," could make that Fender Telecaster come alive with stunning pitch harmonics, and even produce a wah-wah sound through skillful manual volume control w/o need of a foot pedal effects device. Phenomenal guitarist. Too bad he was lost to the world under suspicious circumstances ... again, lost too early!

He is a wizard at playing his emotionally fuelled vibrato. The man had soul for the masses when he played, sorely missed. I think vibrato is the key which is not easy to master. He made me want to master my own vibrato skills, great memories.

I was lucky enough to meet him a few times in my home town of Belfast. He was a nice guy and very modest. His vibrato has to be one of the best of all time. I think his fast playing was so good because he knew when to do it (he got better as he got older in conveying emotion). Some players just shred all the time and it's very boring. Music is emotional and the best players know how to convey that. The one thing I love about Gary is his improvisational ability. No two live versions of a song were the same. I saw him live in a little bar in Belfast before he broke it worldwide and he was absolutely on fire that night. He would definitely change some of his runs depending on how he felt. Enjoyed watching you watch this one. Could tell you were really enjoying it.

There is every technique in this and yes we try and get near however we will never see another Gary. Passion. If you plugged that guitar into Gary's heart this is what you would hear. He pours his soul onto each note. I am a guitarist I will never be Gary. Respect.

God Roy Buchanan was the greatest guitarist 🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸 that ever lived. I love Zappa Beck and Jimmy Page. My three favorites...composers song writers Wizards. But ...the three of them combined could live 1000 years......and they'd NEVER equal Roy Buchanan as a Master Guitarist. Roy played from within his Soul. He was a tortured man who wasn't happy being here. Only his guitar playing brought him close to God. I think Roy was actually communicating with God on a higher level.....through his incredible playing. I will listen to him until my time here ends. And hope in the next life I'll meet him to thank him for sharing his greatness with us. Rest in Heaven Roy. You will never be forgotten

This playing sends a chill up the spine and brings tears to your eyes. I could almost loop this tune for hours. Gary was a criminally overlooked player here in the states. Such a contrast in styles between him and Buchanan. Lots of nods to Buchanan's style with a splash of Moore. Well, much more than a splash, really...

Watching Gary wail and letting the notes cry and then the scary fast climb around 312-ish and then he grabs another blue note and applies the good ol' BB King one note stinger... Classic Gary, what an amazing talent and gone too soon. RIP Gary! I'm really enjoying these video reviews and tend to agree with your take on them so far. Thanks for sharing your insights!

This is a video that I cannot see enough of. I like to listen to Buchanan's version (from Rock Palast) and Gary's back to back. Such different styles, but so much raw emotion. I think Roy would be blown away by Gary's interpretation of this tune. Lots of nods to Roys style in this.

To me this is the very best live guitar performance ever. I would rather hear it than any studio guitar track. wingsofpegasus in 1996 Rocky Athas handed me a CD where Gary was playing some type of Celtic/metal fusion I wasn't to exicited about the songs, but like always Gary's playing was top notch. I did hear some chops on the CD that Gary borrowed from Rocky in his lightening days, Thin Lizzy, wrote a song about Rocky named Cocky Rocky. Rocky was the First one of the Oak Cliff boys that got a deal, it was with Capricorn. They went over to cut their album and the creditors of Capricorn were stripping out everything but the shag carpet. In this business fate is one of the greatest foes anyone faces, you just have to spit some tobacco juice on the stings and double down, maybe fate will smile on your dedication and maybe it won't. Giving up is not an option. The world may never have a chance to know your potential, but the heavenly host is keeping track of every single note, so give it your best every time you have the chance, because music isn't like a car wash, it rings through eternity, and these stings, bumps, and bruises are temporal. Never give up, the wheel will find you, if you stay true to light you emanate.

Oh yeah, it helps if you are blessed with a head full of non-stop musical phrases rattling around in your noggin. As one comes your subconscious is working out the resolution, the higher quality the imput the greater the resolution will be. Most of the greatest musical talents I have encountered all have this special quality. LOL some are just thieves, we won't stroll down that rocky road. Protect your songs, and don't offer your services without a contract, a handshake isn't worth the paper it wasn't written on.

One more thing, if someone tries to act like they are doing you a favor, they're not. Practice and experience are not tangible results, because if you weren't at the stage where you could perform at the desired level, they wouldn't waste their time on you, they would be looking for someone else to vamp out of their years of practice and dedication, while siphoning off of their talents. Just make sure any deal you enter is as rewarding for you as it is for the people offering. Exposure has it's value, but if they are offering, how did they find you to start with? You can work on your stage presence at out of the way open mic nights, keep that to a minimum, make people pay for your art. With upwards of 7 billion people on this planet, you'll find your niche.

Glad you liked my suggestion, told you it was good! What did you think of the other one I suggested, The Prophet? His best version of that is the album version. So full of emotion. Apparently, the reason for his amazing vibrato was that he was a lefty that played right-handed, it gave him that extra strength to ring the notes out of every thing he played.

How cool was it that Peter Green traded this 59 with the famous out of phase configured pickups for one of Gary's SG's. They were great friends & that tone they both achieved with their own styles & approaches was true rock & blues history. No one will make that Les Paul wail like Gary did. It never mattered to him whether it was Blues or all out hard rock or a mellow tune he always put that 110% all out drive & passion into it as if it were the last song he would ever play . We all will miss him very much.

After you have seen GARY MOORE....it's like all the other great guitarists are no longer exciting anymore. GM has set the bar so high here, it is unlikely any guitarist past, present or future can accomplish what he did here. With respect to Mr Buchanan, Mr Bonamassa, Mr Stevie Ray Vaughan (one of Gary's insperations), Mr Clapton, Mr Satriani, Mr Van Halen, Mr Santana... and all those I have no time to list (you get my point) this is the greatest example of electric guitar mastery ever caught on tape. Whether it’s single note, rhythm, string bending, vibrato, hammering, arpeggio, tone, scale, pentatonics, proper diatonics, finger picking, or power chords.. this is the epitome of mastery of the guitar. I doubt you can find a guitar player that would disagree. It disappeared for about a year or more on KZbin and I’m glad it’s back. It should be shared with anyone you can get to listen. The world should remember Gary Moore.!!

Gary Moore was a gentleman, he helped Buddy Whittington when John Mayall went with Rocky Athas and Greg Rabb in his newer lineup. Buddy held that spot for 15 years, that's longer than George Harrison was a Beatle. Gary was a big help when it came to Buddy landing on his feet, Gary Moore was already my favorite Guitarist, but my opinion of him as a man went way up considering his dealings with Buddy. RIP Gary

Beautiful track, Gary put so much into everything he did, it was emotional but so aggressive too. The attack of a guitar is fierce and those who knew him said his anger in his playing came from the attack that left him scarred. He was somewhat underrated but will be sadly missed. RIP Gary 🙏

We all shake hands. But certain days we shake hands more or less differently. This song...Roy's identifier played by Gary, I think exemplifies what Gary hears IN Roys playing and uses volume swells to power forward the music on concert stage...meanwhile our private Master plays same song as uf he is IN a church..quietly leading you along the music of the pray until an explosion of the feeling you just knew was coming and finally did. Artist can do this w songs...put their own emotional power into it

My all time favourite number - I listened to this so many times already and never get tired of it. The sounds he produces are beyond words. Anyone out there I have a question, I used to listen to Santana albums (on Vinyl) for hours and there was a guitar solo that I just can't recall what it was called - starts with the sound of the sea washing up on a beach and is really a beautiful piece?

That's Gary at his best. Flawless bends and awesome vibrato. And those dynamics, of course. The guitar was truly an extension of his soul. Now that I think about it, a modern player who uses dynamics a lot is Paul Gilbert. Have you done a video of Michael Schenker yet?

Thinking about the emotional content behind a piece played by two of the top players....made me think of the difference emoted by the two versions..... Roy's version to me was an internal prayer drawing you in....Gary's version is an exuberant call to a prayer's declaration

That said, it qualifies if you ever want to break apart and anyluze all the pieces of this master performance in its entirety, which I believe, is unparalleled in history. There I said it. One of my greatest disappointments was never seeing THE MAN in person. The best compliment I ever got was when someone said, “You play like Gary Moore.” Not that I was anywhere even remotely as good, I just naturally play with a lot of bending and vibrato.

This is great. All the greats mouth sync the notes as they play. Fil I just got thru watching Peter Frampton acoustic version of Black hole sun. When you climb to the top of ROCK mountain you'll find Peter, Gary,Roy. Should make list who you think the greats were go as far back as you want. See what every one comes up with. Dig your show
