Robben is one of those players you hear and think "that's not overly difficult to play" until you try, his phrasing and control is so spot on. I had jazz guitar lessons for years and always tried to achieve that level, of course I never did :)

What a wonderful performance. I first became aware of Robin Ford in the 80s when I worked for a large music distribution company. My first listens to him were very frustrating because of the production on the cds at that time did not seem to bring out the dynamics of him or his band . Fast forward to the late 90s, I watched him on a PBS program, it might have been Austin City Limits,I was pleasantly blown away. He is totally unique in whatever style he chooses. thanks for posting this masterpiece.

Robin is a remarkable player. He lived up in Ukiah California. So he would play The Mystic Theater in Petaluma California. You could stand 10 feet away from the guy and watch him work. And you're looking for him to use the major pentatonic or minor pentatonic, the box system. But that isn't always what he does, he chooses his path anywhere on the neck he wants that provides him the setup for what he's going to do next. Oh it's a chromatic descent from the 5th to the 1st with an arpeggio on a minor 7th. One time I was watching him and he was doing a pure instrumental, something he rarely does. When he finished the crowd was dead quiet. He looked out to the audience and he said "was I so good I left you speechless?" Well we all went crazy screaming and clapping because that's exactly what he did. He was so good that we were dropped mouth silent. He also teaches on KZbin. He plays well and tastefully, great to listen to, and an education to watch. Check out Larry Carlton

Nice story eric. I have family that lived north of Ukiah and on one trip back south got inspired and asked aguy at a fast food place if Ford Road was named after Robben's family, like Charles Ford. Guy laughed and said it went back to the 20's.

Nice explanation of tremolo and vibrato. Here’s my Robben Ford story. It’s 1993. I get tickets to see a show with Danny Gatton and some guy named Robben Ford who I’d never heard of. I figure this Ford guy would open the show for Danny Gatton. Nope. Gatton and his band open up. It’s mind blowing of course. They clear the stage and set up a very sparse staging of a drum set bookended by several guitar amps on one side and a bass setup on the other. Robben was playing as a power trio in those days with Tom Brechtlein on drums and Roscoe Beck on bass. When the band walked out Robben’s wearing an Armani suit. He plugs in, hooks his long hair behind his ears, and they proceed to power through Step On It, an as yet unreleased instrumental on his upcoming album. It gives me chills to this day. What a night. That tone, that band, I’ll remember that night till the day I die.

Also, Duane Allman, in a studio session, said something along the lines of, "I can't play on this. You didn't leave me any room." He can shred with the best of them, but his skills playing chords and using dynamics really sets him apart from other guitarists. Robben is a master for sure. Been listening to him since his days with Tom Scott and the LA Express from the late 70's. I used to play Robben's version of Talk to Your Daughter. One of the most tricky tunes I ever played live. No room for screw ups and you're playing over changes a good bit of the time. This stuff can be more of a challenge than some shred fest thing like the last poster mentioned. I can listen to Robben and Larry Carlton all day. They have a few great videos of those two sharing the stage. Might make a good video analysis ??

@knawl6 жыл бұрын
@@wingsofpegasus I understand why you wouldn't want to go into detail, but a simple way to explain syncopation would be to say it's playing off the beat in a rhythmic fashion. Of course you know your audience better than I do. Maybe somewhere down the line would be more appropriate, its just playing with time much as vibrato and tremolo do with pitch and volume

Just knew he was good (though he said he hated Rock :) First release i bought was Talk To Your Daughter when i wasn't playing much. Rediscovered this when i was and this album plus his later solo and Blue Line releases were jammed with for hours. The Brother is a great Blue Line track. Truth was the last release i bought. it's great, too. Nice Tele here. I believe a '67 (oops a '60) he found in SF (BMM) when gearing up for a Fillmore gig. There's a vid here devoted to it. btw,,,this tunes from Tiger Walk which i have as well.

Yeah, that vid that shows up for the '60 Tele from Guitarist Magazine is fairly recent. There was another that was better, though he didn't play it. Seems The Blue Line stopped by Black Market Music (late) in like '91 before the Fillmore gig to but strings, cables and stuff and off in the distance, Robben saw this blonde Tele. Funnily enough, he was never a 'fan' but this one spoke to him. I think he paid like $3700 for this which hard to believe was alot of money for this Tele then (ha). Its on the cover of Blue Moon, another great disc. reason to drag out my Fat Tele back in the day.

Dang that was smooth....Dang. This vid took me down a rabbit hole. I don't know anything about music. I looked up tremolo and vibrato and ended up in Khan Academy watching a course on the properties of sound. They never mentioned flashing the rock on/devil horns not even once. So I went back to Google and Eddie Van Halen's performance on Jimmy Kimmel kept popping up in the results for tremolo. kzbin.info/www/bejne/gJ6XnZh8Ys2NiM0, and just "BB King" for vibrato. It was hard for me to make out EVH's famous tremolo - he goes so fast, I'm not sure what I'm hearing -- but tremolo is that Chris Isaak, surf guitar, Angelo Badalamenti Twin Peaks sound, right?
@wingsofpegasus6 жыл бұрын
Tremolo is the same note just an increase and decrease in volume, like waves of volume. That's all. Vibrato is a change in the pitch of a note, it's nothing to do with volume ☺
