Like that I found you. I am a Londoner who now lives in the US. My son was #27 on defense ( in your picture) for GT. Had 10 family members from London join us in Dublin for the game. By the end of the game, they had a better understanding of it. They loved the passion and spectacle of the game.

Rankings in week zero (even for the first few weeks of the season) don’t mean much. They are based on prior year results plus consideration for players lost and new recruits/transfers. At this point in the season, it’s more useful for seeing which teams are expected to have playoff expectations. Also, due to the new 12-team playoff format this year, a single loss is not nearly as detrimental. Before, as little as one loss (or even zero losses depending on the quality of your wins as we saw with Florida State last year) could knock you out of contention. Now there’s more room for error. There will likely be 2 and maybe even 3-loss teams in the playoffs this year.

Next Saturday is the official start of college football so they cal it "week one". A couple of teams usually play a special celebratory game the week before like this game. Since it is before week one, they call week zero. That's all.

Week 0 is the week before all the teams start their season, but on that week 0 Saturday a few games are played, usually none of them are very good but today was the exception. So next week will be week one and way more teams will play

It’s become a college football tradition over the last decade that the very first game of the season in week zero is played in Ireland. No other game is even scheduled domestically on TV until the expected conclusion time of the Ireland game. Ireland is a big rugby country so they view American football as something that could be a big draw there and it has been successful. It’s part of the way to grow college football internationally. They don’t play a ton of international games like the NFL does… This is the only one. Typically on week zero no big name team plays, usually the Ireland game has one or two bigger name teams but very rare that any top 25 ranked team plays on week zero. Usually those big ranked matchups take the spotlight away from the smaller teams during the regular season so they schedule about five or six games on week zero and usually try to give the smaller teams some TV time so that way they can get some recognition before the big teams take the spotlight away.

That coach was the Florida State head coach. The team with the gold numbers is Georgia Tech. Florida State colors are garnet and gold. Georgia Tech colors are white and gold.

Week 0 is a limited number of teams playing like one game per time slot basically as opposed to once week 1 comes and everyone is playing someone. Rankings in week 0 through 3 are pretty meaningless as it's mostly based on last year's results plus some consideration of players leaving vs recruited, also teams tend to prefer to schedule weaker than their typical conference schedule non conference games in the first few weeks of the season to be used to playing by the time actual conference games start. Once people start playing conference games and also tough non conference games are typically scheduled later in the season you start to see the rankings change as people in the ranks start to lose games.

When you run successfully in football, there is little need for an arm. Just once in a while to keep them honest. The ranking are pretty good most times. But they don't measure will to win among other things. You should probably pick a few teams to follow. Some large highly ranked teams & some smaller no-name schools. Depending on what your college football package allows.

With the expanded playoffs this year, being undefeated at the end of the year isn't as important as it once was, from here on out its predicted that certain teams with an impressive schedule and season with 2 or 3 losses will get in the playoffs.

This was a pretty big upset, Florida State was favored by around 10 points, and they finished last year undefeated (until their bowl game) and are favorites to win the ACC again, and Georgia Tech is a average team, so this wasn't expected at all.

I think it's Week 0 because a long time ago they decided that Labor Day Weekend was the start of the season, then they changed their minds and let some games take place a week earlier. Considering that most colleges and universities in the US are already in session, I guess it makes sense. I still think a game in Ireland should feature the Fighting Irish though.

Upsets like this are fairly common when it’s a teams first game for two reasons: rankings don’t really mean much yet, they’re pretty much just guesses, and also there’s no preseason or exhibitions, so this is truly each teams first time playing another. This allows for more upsets

The rankings in week zero, week one, and a little bit and weak to aren’t necessarily the most accurate. I mean they never are the most accurate because they are always subjective because how do you rank the top 25 teams among 134 teams when most of them never play each other… But they’re even more subjective this time of year. However it still holds weight for the postseason seating. if you are a team and lose to an unranked team it’s still going to be a hit on your resume. With the playoffs expanding to 12 teams having a loss at any point in the season isn’t as damaging as it was before… It’s no longer a death sentence. That being said all of the rank teams are still typically significantly better than the unranked teams, whether it’s week zero or a week 11. So if an unranked team is beating a ranked opponent it still relatively significant in terms of the expected quality of the two teams.

It’s week 0 because no college is playing this weekend except for this one game. So for the vast majority of teams week 1 starts either on Thursday, Friday, or Saturday of this week. NFL doesn’t start for another two weeks.

Brother, you should really get your eyes checked because the Florida State Seminoles' colors are red, gold, and white, and Georgia Tech's colors are blue, gold, and white. Of course, part of the charm is that you’re from England and don’t know anything about American football, but you could at least take the time to Google Team Colors because being colorblind isn’t funny.

This is a pretty big deal because Georgia Tech usually sucks anually, whereas Florida State is usually pretty good and it's a lopsided rivalry. No matter how early that this is in the season, this could very well take Florida State out of the playoff picture depending on how Tech does the rest of the year compared to other teams that are in contention.
