There was a famous tough guy that played rugby at the highest level. He tried out for an NFL team and said he had never been hit so hard.

In that black and white footage depending on the exact year it could be anything goes. there was a spearhead formation that was made illegal because entire defensive lines could be trampled and a lot of players died. that was circa de 30s so im not sure when that shit was made illegal. close line was 60s or 70s when that became illegal i think.

One thing to understand about American football is it was invented right after the American Civil War as a 'war game' and violence was basically the whole point. Many football players were psychopaths and surviving a game was half the battle. Most plays were designed to bludgeon the opposing team, and it was common to see players kicking opposing players in the head on the ground which resulted in several deaths. The game has been redesigned over and over and 90% of the core rules were made to protect players from themselves and to keep legislators from banning it. And the rules have continued to be tweaked seemingly every year for decades to attempt to make it safer and more commercially viable. Every single generation of football players has bemoaned how 'soft' the game became with the subsequent generation, but violence has always been considered 'necessary'

Usually any above the shoulder pads could be targeting. Any helmet to helmet hits is an automatic penalty
@helgar791
@helgar791 Жыл бұрын
In pro football it's perfectly legal to tackle from the ankles to the shoulders. You cannot target the head, you cannot have head to head contact, you cannot grab the scruff of the pads behind the neck, and you cannot target what the refs feel is a defenseless receiver. If a QB is sliding and giving up his forward progress you cannot hit him while he is sliding, and you cannot grab the face mask. There are other rules for excessiveness such as hitting a player when out of bounds and such. Otherwise, shoulder charge all you want. When the player is clotheslined at 2:33 that was legal at the time and has since been made illegal. In blocking any offensive player that is on his line of scrimmage and inside the zone at the snap may block below the waist, clip, or block in the back. An illegal crackback block penalty occurs when an offensive player comes from more than two yards outside the offensive tackle or from the backfield and makes contact below the waist, above the neck, from a blind side, or from behind.

You can’t target someone’s helmet. You can’t lead with the crown(top) of your own helmet. You can’t grab someone by the collar, name plate, or face mask. You can’t roll up on the back of someone’s legs. You can’t tackle someone of they’re already out of bounds. Tackling below the waist is very legal and is encouraged when smaller players are trying to bring down larger players.

The most common injury, on any team I played on, was fingers. Especially defensive players. The numbers of time you grab a jersey and have your fingers wrapped up in it, only for both of you to go different directions is crazy. That, or getting your hands up on a rush and getting your hand caught between helmets. Or stepped on by those cleats. Freezing weather was the worst. Magnified the finger smashes immensely.

I like how you mentioned the natural reaction to slow down before a collision. It something that takes a lot of time to train out of a person. If you watch little kids play. You can see the slight hesitation before impact. But as they get older. Around 12, 13, 14. They start to get past that natural instinct to slow down. And start using their bodies as a weapon instead. Not everyone gets there though. Seen plenty of 18 year old's who were still scared to get hit after years of playing.

Your allowed to hit below the waist you just can hit them near the head to neck area or pull the neck area of the jersey or grab the helmets face mask
@shanestevens5352
@shanestevens5352 Жыл бұрын
You are allowed to close line someone but you can’t go after the “head or neck area”. This wasn’t always the case and in older games you’ll see guys leading a tackle with their helmet into the other guy’s helmet. That was banned in recent years due to obvious concussions. If you lead with your shoulder into someone’s chest that is perfectly fine

I recon the "Best Jukes" video is what you're looking for. It's not about running the length of the field per se, rather it's a display of pure athleticism and agility. Running the length of the field is fun, but not nearly as entertaining as breaking somebody's ankles, imo.

Just so you know, the average NFL career is 3 1/2 years. Much to do with injuries. So, if you see a player that has been playing for 5, 6 or 10 years, they are usually the overachievers with unheard-of work and physical workout ethics.

One thing most first time viewers don't realize is that pretty much all pro players are north of 200lbs and the majority closer to 300lbs. That kind of mass moving at those speeds is amazing.

3:25. Think about all the soccer/football "flops" in the UK and around the world for hurt ankles. Americans NEVER take that crap seriously! On average, an NFL Running back or Receiver runs at 18 MPH or 29 KPH Those collisions are small traffic accident collisions. Most of those guys are 6'3" 250 lbs!!

If you wanna see run the ball. React to “Best Trucks in Football”. Or “Best Stiff Arms in Football.” It’s pretty awesome and shows the pure strength of some of these absolute machines of players. Also the Best Jukes is good. It’s really up if you’d rather like to see defenders get ran over or get put on their ass without even touching the ball carrier.
