What's up guys, Part 2 is out earlier than I planned to but I had a whole host of issues getting this part posted to KZbin as it kept getting taken down and blocked. From the 10 minute mark the editing gets FUNKY but it's the best I could do in order to get it posted for you guys, I hope you still enjoy it!

Irsay had been threatening to move the team since 1976! 4 years after he bought it! He shopped it to Memphis, Jacksonville (where he landed on the 50 yd line in a helicopter in 1979 and said, "I'm bringing the Colts to Jacksonville!"), Phoenix, LA, New York, and Indianapolis. The state's eminent domain attempt, although on dubious legal ground, was only attempted after 8 years of Irsay shopping the team around, and 3 months of public intense negotiations with Phoenix and Indy.

One bit of background - prior to 1960, Texas was Redskins country, probably because local talent Sammy Baugh played there. The owner, George Preston Marshall, was preventing Dallas from joining. The prospective Dallas owner, Clint Murchison, bought the rights to the Redskins fight song and told Marshall "If you ever want to play that again, you will support our entry".

The "Atlanta Thrashers" ended up being used for the Atlanta NHL team in 1999. The second try of having a hockey team in the city. Much like its predecessor the Atlanta Flames who eventually moved to Canada to become the "Calgary Flames" in 1980. The Atlanta Thrashers left for Canada in 2012 to become the Winnipeg Jets. The Brown Thrasher is the Georgia state bird. Meaning for a few years, Atlanta had three bird named major league teams. NFL, Atlanta Falcons. NBA, Atlanta Hawks. Then the aforementioned Atlanta Thrashers.

Money was ALWAYS involved. The reason teams folded was down to whether they were able to financially operate. These teams were always about the business rather than pride within a city. Something I think would be a good reference would be a population density map for each decade. It'll help explain, one, why the NFL started where it did, and, two, why they expanded to where they did later. Neither of these apply to the Green Bay Packers, as they are the only NFL team to publicly owned by the fans. Currently, there are more than 537,000 owners (stockholders). They are also in the smallest media market.
@Lewis9700

Fun fact: The name "Super Bowl" didn't originate until the third SB. The first 2 SB's were simply called the NFL-AFL Championship Game. After SB II, the NFL Commissioner, Pete Rozelle, noticed his daughter playing with a "Super Ball"(a popular kids toy in the 60's, a small tightly wound rubber ball that would bounce really high) and decided to use the name Super Bowl, for the championship game, and the name has stuck ever since.

Wow, what a great video. The NFL documents its history in such great detail making it easy to get a sense of how its grown to such prominence in American culture. Its funny to hear Joe unable to relate to teams moving from one city to another over the history of the NFL. Most states only have one team like my home state of Washington. The closest NFL teams to Seattle are the San Francisco 49'ers at over 800 miles and LA at over 950 miles. That is a long way to travel to watch an NFL game. Much closer to home we have the Univ of Washington Huskies (located in Seattle) and the Washington State Cougars (located in Pullman, Washington) at only a 4hr 30min drive away. 🏈🏈🏈🏈🏈

One thing the video hinted at but didn't really explain is that the Minnesota Vikings are named after the whole state instead of just Minneapolis or St. Paul. It's a two-city metropolitan area, and the rivalry between the two cities was WAY more intense back then than it is now. It was thought that the failure of past sports teams in Minneapolis/St. Paul (such as the NBA's Minneapolis Lakers, who moved to Los Angeles) came down to fans from the other city not going to games, since it wasn't "their" team. So the Twins and Vikings (who were founded around the same time) were both named after the whole state to avoid that problem.

The Cardinal is the state bird for both Illinois and Missouri because Illinois and St. Louis were French Catholic settlements. That's why the team was in Chicago and then St. Louis. St. Louis also had the baseball Cardinals from the 1920s onward which were right behind the New York Yankees in success. When the football Cardinals moved to Arizona in the late 1980s I thought they would change the name considering that there are no Cardinal birds in Arizona and if there were they would have all died of heat stroke in the desert sun. 😳 😂 In 1987 the Cardinals were in a sold out exhibition game in London called "the battle of Britain" against the Chicago Bears? The NFL was virtually a complete novelty in Britain at the time and of course Brits didn't know the rules yet and were cheering at unusual intervals.

I think it makes more sense for the NFL to move or add a team to Mexico and Canada. I hate the fact that Los Angeles has 2 teams. Its pointless. Although, it's unlikely that the NFL will be allowed in Canada because the Canadian Football League would not want the competition.

im not sure if its related, but i had always believed the vikings name was influenced by the kensington runestone, which is evidence of viking settlers making it to minnesota, however it is most likely a hoax

The first Tampa Bay Buccaneers team may have been the worst team ever. They went 0-14. They were so bad that supposedly at one point in the season a reporter asked the head coach, "What do you think about the execution of your team?" and he replied, "I'm in favor of it!".

The Boston Braves (MLB) eventually moved to Milwaukee for 12 years, and ultimately on to Atlanta in 1966 where they still play today. And yes, "Redskins" was an incredibly inflammatory term. Ownership staunchly and defiantly refused to change the name until controversy bubbled over as part of the racial reckoning which occurred in the wake of the George Floyd murder in 2020. They were known as the Washington Football Team for two years before officially assuming the moniker "Commanders" in 2022. (i.e. only just this season)

Yes it was extremely divisive. Oh sure about 90% loved the "Redskins " but 10% didn't like so they changed it to placate them.

yeah, every time a franchise moves the fans are crushed, but the worst has got to be the Colts' move from Baltimore to Indianapolis. Normally when teams move locations they give the city a heads up a year, or at least some months, ahead of time. In this case however, the team literally packed up and moved in the middle of night without telling anyone other than the players and coaches. Even the team band got left behind

And in 2022 the Redskins changed their name to the Commanders because "redskin" is a pejorative term for native Americans and people didn't like it. They were considered red people, just like how each human race is assigned a colour. Honestly, it annoyed me that they removed something associated with the indigenous peoples. Now the chiefs are the only NFL team that still maintains an indigenous identity.

I kind of wish that Atlanta was named the Confederates. Mainly because I’d be curious to see which name got dropped first, that or the Redskins. Also, what kind of symbolism would Super Bowl LI hold with Patriots vs Confederates?

They don't cover some embarassing bits. The founding of the AFL had the guy that founded the Vikings. He was guaranteed an NFL franchise if he led the AFL on then abandoned them at the last minute. That is the only reason the Boston Patriots survived -the AFL need another team. Fiscally they were the weak sister - seriously using stolen milk crates to sit on as game film got projected on to bed sheets. The merger with the NFL forced them out of Boston because they needed their own stadium. Massachusetts is the bay state so for one day they were the bay state Patriots. After printing letterhead they noticed that was the B.S. Patriots.

Not sure if this is something you would normally react to but I would love to see you watch Who's On First by Abbott and Costello. It's a comedy skit about baseball and what they were most known for.
Please be kind🙏
