One point...all of the men and women you've watched in these two videos are members of the United States Military, not just the folks from the Army Boot-Camp. Our military, just as in the UK, is broken into different branches: Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, and Coast Guard. Each service has their own "style" of recruit training, but, they all have the same basic idea: break down the individual civilians and build them back into members of that service. Respect to all who serve their country, whatever that country, from a US Navy veteran (1975-1985).

It’s so much fun to watch. As an Army Soldier we believe we are the best branch. But ask a Marine or an Airmen or a Sailor and they will say the same about their branch. There is a long history of competition between the branches over who is the best. What it comes down to though in reality is that we are all valuable and each branch has their own important mission. I will say that Marines definitely have the best Dress Uniform. What follows is something I copied to paste that says it all and explains how each branch sees things. *Oh, and to my Coast Guard brothers and sisters not purposely leaning you out. Shout out to the Coast Guardsmen. The reason the Air Force, Army, Navy and Marines bicker amongst themselves is that they don’t speak the same language. For instance, Take the simple phrase “secure the building”. The Army will post guards around the place. The Navy will turn out the lights and lock the doors. The Marines will kill everybody inside and set up a headquarters. The Air Force will take out a 5 year lease with an option to buy. (Copied and pasted.) #ArmyStrong
@bardaghohio3 жыл бұрын
Had to chuckle at that...and, speaking as a US Navy vet, we'd go inside the building, check out the sleeping accommodations, see where the closest bar might be, and, when we came back, just turn out the lights and hit the rack.

When I went to sign up for the marine corp we did PT three times a week (voulentary) before I even went for a physical or entrance exam. It consisted of doing as many pull ups as possible then we split into two groups. One group would run 5 sets of 50 yard suicides(set is 50 there and 50 back which is almost 50m each way full sprint) while one group does this the other group does pushups non stop for one set, sit ups for another, lunges with 30pound ammo crates, jumping jacks and then cettle bells. Once the first group finishes running they switch and repeat the process. Switch and repeat again. Then you end the work out doing as many pull ups as you can again. This was before even knowing if they will accept us into basic training.

God this brings back memories. I went through MCRD San Diego back in 2017. Can confirm that this video is WAY watered down. The best way I can describe that gas chamber is agony. If you have ever accidently sniffed pepper, that burning sensation in your nose is what your entire body feels like OUTSIDE the chamber. When you break the seal, you immediately start choking. When I had to do it the first time it was the closest to pure, animalistic panic I have ever been. (By the way, you have to do the gas chamber at least once a year once you become a Marine.)

Our oldest son joined the Marine Corps and our youngest jointed the Army's 82nd Airborne Special Operations Division. Though they made about $25,000 per year starting out, as their ranks increased, they made more. Our Special Ops son made even more than that. While they're in, they get free food, housing, utilities, medical care, and college education. After they're out, they get excellent medical benefits of life, many companies offer discounts to military vets, spouse and child benefits, and special consideration for jobs. They both saved a lot of money and were able to invest some and have money for the down payment on a home. If you're wise, you can make it work for you. They serve because they love their country. Though the pay is not good, there are good benefits that follow them the rest of their lives. They truly deserve it.

13 weeks, oh my that seems relatively short. Granted I spent the first 18 years of my life on this earth being yelled at and held to Marine expectations. Being raised by a man that spent his 8 years of service in Nam. Civilian children have no clue how lucky they are. Probably why the world is soft and full of candy asses. My father had a very different way of raising his children, I assure you that being put on time out was not a thing in our house. But being ripped out of your bunk and thrown into the floor or wall well you were asleep was considered an easy evening. Have you ever seen a 16 year old be tossed up 14 stairs by the throat for trying to disobey their father? This is why I laugh when kids these days talk about their parents abusing them because they didn't buy them this or that or because they grounded them or took there tech away. Oh your child's a picky eater don't worry a year of canned goods roulette will take care of that. That's when you peel all the labels off the canned goods and force them to eat whichever they chose to open or they can sleep with an empty belly until they do. You are right that the pay sucks, but should you survive there are quite a few earned incentives on the other side. Free college, no rent, no major bills well in the service, cheaper vehicle insurance for the rest of your life. They will help you buy a house when you leave the service. Oh and they get preferential hiring treatment at most jobs as well. Well at least at any decent company they do. Plus their is a bunch of other earned rights that your spouse and kids can claim for your time in the service. Oh plus they can work certain jobs that you need military clearance to work and those usually pay better then average. I heard somewhere that the overall investment to train a Marine on the low end is about 250k. So the men and women that chose that path are an investment the country makes. So if a country is going to invest money into turning a normal person into a weapon... it's usually better off making sure they are well taken care of when that persons service ends. It's the only taxes I pay that I think that are worth paying, because most of the reasons they take my money it's for people who didn't do a thing to earn it. The military on the other hand as you said are underpaid for what they do and actually earn those tax dollars. So that is the only portion of taxes I pay that don't make me feel like I am being robbed.

The quicksand is very dangerous. I completed bootcamp in 1975. I was a good athlete in high school but it took every thing I had both psychologically and physically to make it. Don't believe the Lt. Col when he said 99.9% make it. That is not true. Many simply cannot handle the mental stress. They know how to break you down mentally until you are a blubbering idiot. I feel like the 'bootcamp videos' never really give you an accurate representation of bootcamp; its all highly regulated, and they don't show you how bad it actually is. I went through in 2007, and its way worse; i mean i dont know how it is now but its a lot worse than the video. My DI slammed a rifle butt so hard into my face because I fucked up a drill movement that my eye was swollen shut. Either way, I'd say ITB (Infantry Training Battalion, where you go after bootcamp as an infantryman) was much more physically demanding than bootcamp. Honestly the entirety of the marines just kinda sucked lol. Even when I hit the fleet, the unit I joined hazed the shit out of us new guys for months. On our first day checking into the unit, the senior guys made us pound down like a bottle of Bacardi rum, put on our gas masks and low crawl through the gravel parking lot for what felt like hours. The cuts on my knees and elbows werent as bad as puking into your own gas mask from the alcohol...hell of an experience, highly recommend it lol.

I was there in 02 and remember the DI picking a guy up and shoving his back into the front sight post of his M16 that was hanging on his rack. Another guy got a clipboard slammed on his head. Another one had a canteen to the face when he was nodding off. You're right. The entirety of the Marines do suck, at least for the first 4 years. I think it would've been better had I went to Pendleton instead of Lejeune though.
