Yeah great stuff:) Some places in the world also design for stuff like this, for example Taiwan or Japan or the Netherlands. Their cities, because of urban/mobility design are often much warmer even during heatwaves. The KZbinr Not Just Bikes has an interesting video about Japan called ''The Secret to Japan's Great Cities'' but also many about other cities. It'd be awesome if the US would implement other proven to work measures against elements too:)

Yeah, I think of the whole “America is the best!” as being in the same vein as “My sports team is the best!” Everyone has a team where they live that they route for, sing the praises of and enjoy. I would expect French to praise the virtues of France and Japanese to praise the virtues of Japan and so on. Of course, some places are so bad this isn’t really an option (like North Korea or something). But assuming you’re happy with where you live, I think it’s normal and even healthy as long as we keep the competition friendly and good natured.

The normal way we go from SF to NYC is via a jet aircraft. It only takes five or six hours. Hence the phrase "flyover state". But if you're going to go on the ground, I would strongly suggest Amtrak instead of driving. You get meals and a place to sleep right there on the train. Getting just a seat is much cheaper, but for a long journey like that, you want to be able to lie down and sleep. West of the Mississippi, all the meals are made right there on the train (in the east, generally speaking they use food that comes from outside and just heat it up). If you get a "bedroom" or "family bedroom", you have a toilet and shower right there in your room, all to yourself. If you get a roommette you have to share it with others. And the amtrak train will also have a sight seeing lounge, where you can sit in a swivel chair pointed outward to huge windows. Flying is the best and fastest, but if you have the time to go on the ground, Amtrak is better than driving. 🙂It's a little slower, but you know, you're not going to cross the country 25 hours if you're doing it alone...at some point you need to use the bathroom or sleep. With Amtrak, while you do that, you're still moving. The quickest Amtrak trip across the country is 3 days. 🙂
@DoyleRichards-v1l
@DoyleRichards-v1l 2 ай бұрын
I've crossed the country North to South around 2 dozen times, so I can say with confidence that an East to West drive across the States will take six 12 hour days of driving. Of course if you want to stop and see things along the way you should take 3weeks at a minimum - A whole month would be better. One can rent an RV almost very where (Probably cost as much in petrol as does to rent the RV). Or buy one (their cheap second hand) and then sell it when you get to the other side.

The "bedroom" and "family bedroom" give you a toilet and shower right there in the room, all to yourself. Also there's a sight seeing lounge with swivel chairs pointed outward toward large windows. "Technically that's the same everywhere, right?" I mean... you don't have to look very far to see that's not the case, with all of the weirdness going down in England with regards to their draconian "hate speech" laws. Even Rowan Atkinson (Mr. Bean) has called the government out on how they've been infringing on free speech. And that's in Europe, in a 1st world western country. Not being allowed to speak freely, or believe freely and openly, (at least in regards to the government) is WAYYY worse in places like China and Russia.

Adam, the difference between America and Canada is basically Climate. If Canada was further south than it is, it would probably be a great place as well. But considering the the vast, vast majority of Canadian residents live within 100-150 miles of the US border should tell you something right there. Canada is considered mostly wilderness and arctic tundra. And the Winters are BRUTAL. That where the Ice Sheets (aka glaciers) came down into fhe central US during the last Ice Age. You get glaciers when the snow never melts and it just get compacted over time to form that solid ice river. America is just at right latitude level. It's mostly in a temporate region. Excluding Alaska, the Lower 48 typically experiences a steady 4 season climate where everywhere will get a slight taste of winter, if you're in the south, or slight taste of summer if you're in the north. But picture this, the 49°N parallel is our northern border to Canada. The 49th goes right thru Paris. That's how farther south the entire Lower 48 is to the UK.

Also it's a 3 thousand foot drop from Colorado where I live to Utah which I live near. I can see 200 miles into Utah from my living room The sunsets are amazing because the horizon is actually lower than where you are standing.. So it can be completely cloudy for 300 miles around but the sun peaks below the clouds just in time to set. OK I'll stop I could go on. Florida I hear is nice to visit. Too flat for me to live in though.

My buddies and I went to both these places back in 1986 or so. It was amazing going back almost 40 years later and taking pictures at the same exact places with my wife of 33 years. We try to do 1-2 national parks every year. Then we will do the gulf, normally 1-2 days in Destin, FL area and then 5-7 days at Disney World with our adult kids, their wives and grandchildren. Finally, we do at least one trip overseas. I was amazed to see your video mentioning Yosemite and ski resorts one week after I went to both (of course no snow at this time of year).

Although the powers that be are trying to change it here in the US, that is what makes me feel like we are the greatest country, is our constitutionally protected speech. Many like to claim that other countries have the same freedom of speech that we do, but it’s simply not true. That’s the point of our Constitutional Republic, our laws and enforcement of those laws must NEVER violate constitutional rights. (Although many are trying)

Our country is technically an experiment that has somehow hasn’t failed, and over time of keeping this experiment going we look around the world, and for some reason many around the world want the results but don’t understand that we don’t have all of the answers for their countries to prosper. The thing is that this isn’t exactly a one size fits all situation, it’s been almost 250 years of trials and errors for our country, a lot of close calls, somehow we manage to stick to it. I think our identity as Americans is truly unique in that it is more about the principles that have been passed down the generations to continue for the future, there are times when we might fail at upholding some of these values, but we try our best to keep the country free.

With the freedom thing. I honestly think that many first world countries have similar freedoms in practice. I think what they guy is referring to however is that the US has these freedoms solidified in our founding documents. I know for example that there ARE certain speech laws in the UK, leading to 3,395 people being arrested for online speech. In addition , the US was one of the first countries to consider you innocent until proven guilty instead of guilty until proven innocent. And while many other countries have now adopted that principle, it’s not necessarily written in their founding documents as a requirement. That sort of thing.

I learned from a young age that an 8hr day is about my limit on driving. Between my home and my parents' home is about 450 miles. Takes about 8-9 hours, depending how often you stop, eat, get gas, etc. By plane it takes 1 hour, but you have to be at the airport 2 hours before takeoff, and then you don't have a car at arrival, so you have to taxi/Uber where you're going. The worst part now is that they've put Buc-cee's along most interstates, so you WANT to stop and look around, but then you're even later getting to your destination.

Yes, America is the absolute best country on earth and in the history of mankind… of course, that’s not to say we don’t have problems, or that we are perfect… no, we’re still human… however, like the guy said… we are not an ethnic group, or a creed or a cultural religion… we are an IDEA, the idea that all men are created equal and that all men should be free to pursue happiness… and we should live without fear of persecution and oppression… yes, history tells us, America though a noble idea, was birthed from blood, blood of patriots that took arms and fought for this idea. This is why the 2 amendments we hold in such a high pedestal are the 1st and 2nd amendments… the 1st ensures we have the right to have the 2nd one, and the 2nd one gives us the power to protect the 1st one… that’s why we have our “crazy” gun culture and why we, Americans are so unapologetically proud to speak our minds. It’s who we are, it’s the American culture… it’s why we LOVE our country, not our government, but our land, our people, our shared values and views, or friends and family… our right to exist…

The nice thing is at least that route there is less mountains, if one was driving East to West though, it takes a long trip because of the rights of the mountains. If I had to take a guess, maybe 6 hours at least, even though it’s not as long of a distance as it is from North to South. If my measurements are correct, I think Italy could fit in California.

The Civil War was fought between April 1861 and April 1865. There was a really good novel about it called "Across Five Aprils" that I had to read back in High School in like 1990. But with that said, even though our History only comprises of about 530 years, going back to Columbus (1492) the land in general has so much history from Native Indians up until contemporary times actually. And speaking of Native Indians, I don't think enough Europeans ever take the chance to visit our desert southwest. And it's so easy to do. You just use Vegas as your Fly-To destination and you go from there. You can go down into Arizona for the Grand Canyon and few other sites, like Sedona, but you can also go to into souther Utah and experience the Mighty Five National Parks along with a handful of smaller State Parks. I guarantee if you see this area, your view of America will never change. The ruggedness and the beauty of the terrain out there is unmatched in the entire world, I'd argue. Especially Zion Nat'l Park. You wanna feel like you're in an Old Western cowboy movie? Go to Zion. That's the first one you come to out of Vegas on I-15. For an example of that, go search the channel @AdventureEveryDay for any scenic drive in Utah.

When you commented about our freedoms (speech and the like) you said isn't that about the same everywhere. No. Our Bill of Rights is the glaring difference. The Bill of Rights (freedom of speech, to bear arms, etc.) is a legal document that says our US Government can NOT interfere with our rights as citizens. For instance, England has just recently revoked it's citizen freedom of speech with hate speech laws. Whenever some state governor or US President, corporation, organization, lower court, or any single individual attempts to censor or revoke a US citizen's freedom of speech, the Supreme Court backs that silenced US citizen in telling the offending moron to go fuck themselves and sometimes an added monetary fine against the offender to make sure they don't try it again. That's the difference.

Speaking of the sheer size of the U.S., the guy that I had as a biology teacher last year said that it takes roughly 2 days to drive from somewhere in Wayne county North Carolina to Salt lake City Utah!🇺🇸 Also both of the Carolinas can fit entirely inside the borders of the state of Texas with plenty of north and south space, AND the state of Alaska is the biggest landmass state in the United States!🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸

I felt a lot more confident saying that it was the greatest 20-30 years ago, it's very hard for me to say it now given what is going on with our freedoms and thought policing and mental health problems....it's scary as hell how fast and far a country can fall in a short period of time.

Its not really the size of the country. Its the geography of it that results in all of Earth's climate and biomes being here. Its not the reason Adam. Its the placement of the country between the Pacific and Atlantic, the orientation of the mountain systems, the direction of the prevailing Earth's winds and water currents. That's what causes the climate and geography diversity. Watch Geography Kings video, it gives a great explanation. kzbin.info/www/bejne/roaWZ32pp9WratU

Stay off of the Interstates. 3-400 miles a day is a good average. I try to make 300 a day but it often takes 14 hrs to do that. I like to stop and look around. Smell the Roses. Eat some pie. It's a vacation not an ordeal. I had a friend, from India, who was going back to his family home for a couple months. I was kidding him about not being Indian any more. A few months later he told me "You were right. It was odd being back in India". Being American is definitely a mental thing.

Everyone needs a good support system. But it is that common belief that keeps us connected as true Americans. Beliefs such as hard work, serving others, education, a belief in a higher power (for a lot of us that is our Heavenly Father, one nation under God) gratitude, integrity, that things will get better (hope) and independence. You should read the words to the pledge of allegiance. We used to have to say it every day not sure if the schools changed it. But it’ll explain a lot about how we think.

The difference in the concept of certain freedoms in the US, and the majority of countries on the planet, is based on the hard to remember basis for the US constitution. The constitution does NOT GRANT the citizen a right; the constitution defines what the government CAN NOT infringe upon... as certain residents in the UK are seeing right now, there really isn't anything stopping the government from imposing its will in regards to what kind of speech is allowed. Here, the first amendment isn't about protecting speech the government agrees with(or citizens at large), it is for protecting speech you(or the government) don't agree with. That is at the heart of the concept of freedoms in the US.

You’d have to live under a rock at this point to have not heard how many people are getting arrested for the stupidest reasons over in most of Europe, or how the British police threaten to arrest others outside the UK for making remarks of the hostility the government is fueling. Honestly if you haven’t heard of this crap, you’ve lost credibility at this point to not look at the hard cold facts that the freedom of speech is being restricted in the UK, and it doesn’t look like it’s going well for the Brit’s and it’s worrisome how many had a false sense of security when we Americans warned over they actually don’t have free speech if the government can just turn it around on a short notice. In the meantime, we at least have our Constitution that has free speech as the 1st amendment followed by the 2nd amendment to protect all of the other speeches from being taken away by the government. The one thing the Americas don't have compared to the rest of the world is a long rich documented history. Prior to explorers and colonists, there's not much written history or long lasting architecture (when compared to the Egyptians, Persians, Greeks, or Romans). Most the history for Native Americans is passed down orally which loses accuracy and preservation over time, and in Central/South America the rain forests have swallowed cities of potentially hundreds of thousands of occupants. This is not to say there isn't rich history in the Americas, we just don't have much in the way of records of it. As for climate, due to the Coriolis effect, being nearer to the equator is actually just a small part of climate. The border between South and North Korea and the northern tip of mainland Africa are within 1 degree of eachother.

Adam, I know that many Europeans assume that the US is directly West of Europe. Sorry, but no. That's Canada. Let me put the geography into perspective. Most of the US is hundreds to more than two thousand miles south of the UK. I live in New England, the most Northeastern part of the US. My city is at the exact same latitude as Rome, Italy which puts it about 600 miles south of London. New York City is about 80 miles south of my location. If you sail directly east from New York City, you would land in Morocco. Key West, Florida is approximately 1,200 miles further south than New York City. So, the Southernmost point on the US Mainland is approximately 1,880 miles south of London.

There can't really be any comparisons, because of the vastness of the country. as far as crime, that stat is based upon 1 in every 100,000 for vilent/capital crimes (rape, murder, assault with a deadly weapon, etc.) And to be honest, I wish that those numbers was still pre-Z Plague; it was truly less dangerous.

Some places we were cautioned to watch our backs, stay quiet, keep everything low-key. But the one thing I noticed, eventually, is that the everyday Joes-and-schmoes, as I liked to think of all the people I met who were pretty much just like me, WERE just like me. They just wanted to do their job, go home and have dinner with the wife and kids and not worry about the crazy crap the news media thought was important. The only “bad” parts of most countries, I discovered, was the damned governments, including my own. Everyday people are awesome, governments suck, life is mostly pretty good, in MOST countries. This is just one man’s opinion, but hey, I did get to meet a lot of different people and cultures. 😎
