Tavon was a technically a wide receiver. In reality, he was a utility player. He could do it all at WVU!

WVU isn't a powerhouse school, EPL equivalent would be maybe West Ham, Tottenham, or Southhampton. A similar school, I think you are more familiar with would be Virginia Tech. A major conference school , the type of team that has some big bowl wins, and a pretty good team most years, just not a championship caliber team like the top tier big SEC and Big Ten schools. Historically they have the most wins of any team to never win the championship.

Everybody who has played football from the middle school to college level has seen this highlight tape atleast once if not multiple times. It’s a classic. He is a gadget player so he played both WR and RB but his primary position is WR. he didn’t pan out in the NFL sadly but still one of the greatest highlight tapes to ever be made

It is good that you guys notice the blocking. Football is a sport that has a lot of action away from the ball, such as the action at the line of scrimmage. Most sports all of the action involves the ball. In football there is action all over the field. The more you watch it, the more you will see. Remember no matter how good a running back or quarterback is, he must have a good line blocking for him.

If it's a passing play I actually watch the linemen/blocking because the wide receivers leave the frame. then i switch to the pass being thrown and then obviously whoever catches it. and if it's a run play i tend to watch the best offensive linemen or defensive linemen unti the rb makes a move

Tavon Austin was one of those guys who sort of defied position labelling. His position was “get him the ball.” My personal favorite of these guys was Percy Harvin. He was a glitch in Madden haha

West Virginia had a small moment during the late 00s/early 10s where they were a top team. They had a perfect mix n match of players that transfered out of bigger schools or didn't get offered by a top school. So you had guys like Tavon Austin that just balled out. Some other players people remember are Pat White (QB), Steve Slaton (RB) and Pat McAfee (K/P). They had a player make the cover of NCAA Football on PSP one year. Great team but short lived

West Virginia was a top 15 program from the 2000s-2012, they were a powerhouse in the late 80s as well. In 2016-2018 they had a bit of a resurgence but nothing too successful. Yes Tavon did make it to the NFL and bounced around the league a bit but he wasn't a superstar like his college highlights would've led you to believe; he's currently a free agent (no team). I actually got to see him play in high school being from the same city. I didn't play against him as I wasn't on the football team but just watching you could see how far ahead of everyone else he was.

Tavon was nominally a wide receiver, but the fun thing about college football is that these electric players can really play WR, RB and returner. Any way to get the ball into their hands. You don’t see it as much in the pros because players at that level are much more specialized. Some players can fill multiple roles but a guy like Tavon was too small to play RB in the NFL, so he was mostly WR and returner whereas in college he did a decent bit of everything.

10:15 West Virginia are not a perennial powerhouse, but they are on occasion quite dangerous. The state's population is quite small, meaning that the pool of in-state talent from which they draw is a bit shallow. However, they are quite near to/bordering other larger states which have an historic reputation for producing a lot of great players. Ohio and Western Pennsylvania in particular seem to manufacture great players. I'm not certain whether it's still the case, but at one time, there used to be a high school all-star game between select teams from Pennsylvania and Ohio. It was often a showcase for players who would soon be playing for the most elite college teams in the country. The Mid-Atlantic region (most notably, Virginia) also generates a lot of talent. Geography is extremely important for college football recruiting. Theoretically, a high school player can go to college anywhere. And sometimes, they pack up and go to a school thousands of miles from their home town. But, it is important to remember that they're kids, in the end. They're prone to homesickness and discomfort in unfamiliar surroundings. They generally want to play in a place where the culture is similar to home, where their families can see them play, etc. This gives Southern schools a huge recruiting advantage. The region has got loads of talent, and southern kids, regardless of race, feel immensely strong cultural and family ties. There was once a coach named Barry Switzer, who was a master at recruiting players from out of state. He knew that the key to winning over a southern kid, was convincing his mother that his school (Oklahoma) was the best place for him. When he went on recruiting visits, he frequently spent 90% of his time charming the player's mother. If she was religious, he would talk about Jesus, quote scripture, etc. If she was concerned about violence in the player's home town, he talked about how safe Norman, Oklahoma was. If she didn't care about football and just wanted her boy to get an education, he spent two hours talking about the academic support the university provided to athletes. If she wanted her son in the NFL, he would invite Oklahoma alumni along and have them discuss the advantages Oklahoma players have over those from other schools at the professional level. Switzer was a great character in college football... A good ol' boy from Arkansas whose father ran bootleg moonshine during alcohol prohibition. His teams were the chief rival of my home state university, therefore I remember him as the architect of broken hearts. But he was certainly quite colorful, and a damned fine football coach.

Think of Austin as the American football equivalent to say Moussa Diaby/Allen Saint-Maximin type player or maybe even a Sadio Mane. Smaller stature but just unbelievably quick, agile and elite top end speed. His NFL career didn't pan out that well sadly but man...he has arguably one of the most electric college highlight tapes EVER.

What are the chances the first time I notice this channel is a reaction to a guy from my college? Crazy lol. I watched this guy as a student in 2010 at WVU, as well as Geno Smith who was QB at the time. Regarding WVU as a college football power, not so much in recent years, but during this era they were a solid top 20 team for awhile, and played in a few of the top bowl games. It's also worth noting that they recruit a lot of their top talent out of high schools in Florida.

Another great vid...(You know I am having my coffee and watching you guys when I leave a book for a comment) Austin is a prime example on how a player can be a combo of RB/WR. He could be deployed either in the backfield or as a receiver, and it could still be a run or a pass from either position. This allows the coaches to get more creative. Tavon did go on the NFL and had a modest 7-10 year career. The thing is that everyone in the NFL has skills on his level, in college his talent was just so much of a higher caliber than the competition he face. 2:55 that was actually a kick-off, 11:57 was a punt return , either the other team just scored or it was the beginning of a half. IF you like Kick returns, look up Devin Hester, DeSean Jackson, Brian Westbrook, Darren Sproles, and I am sure I am forgetting others that people will mention. Number 1 in college is usually given to either the best player or a team captain. There are other numbers that are specifically important to their team due to historical reason, an example is 88 for the Dallas Cowboys, all of their best receivers in that teams history have worn 88, so if you are on that team and have a "legacy" number, you are a bad man! Historically West Va. has been a middling power with periods of excellence

Quick story time that I feel a lot of people can relate to.. Growing up playing QB/WR in middle school and high school (I'm 19 now), before almost every game or any time I and many others wanted to hype ourselves up, this exact Tavon Austin video was the go to. I feel like he's the most electrifying college player ever (Cam Newton, Reggie Bush, Jabrill Peppers are also up there for me) and so just to get into the zone, to try and feel like I was really gonna go out there and dominate, this highlight tape would be played on my little iPhone 5 or whatever I had before every game. Many kids to this day still do the same - he is such an inspiration to the youth.

Vince Young's college career would be good. He was a huge QB, 6'5" 230lbs with a cannon and ran a 4.4 40 yard dash. He was so big and fast...and the fact that he could pump-fake because he could actually make nasty off platform throws created a very difficult quandry for defensive coordinators. Pay special attention to the clips where he is playing Ohio State University or USC. OSU was a top 10 team, and USC had back to back national championships. So those are the best of the best players he is just making look silly. Naturally, as a Longhorn fan, he was/is my favorite QB. Really nice guy too. Cheers 🍻

West Virginia had a small window when they were a threat to win the championship, but would always get that one bad loss at the end that knocked them out for the chance to play for the then BCS championship. From 2009 with Pat White, Steve Slaton to 2013 with Tavon Austin and Geno Smith, the Mountaineers were a fun watch.

West Virginia was a good, competitive team in the Big East, before we made our premature move to the Big 12 conference, where we've been struggling ever since. However, WVU does still produce NFL-level players.

Austin was a classic example of a guy getting drafted by the wrong team. When the Rams drafted him their coach was Jeff Fischer who was known for coaching teams with very little offensive creativity. He could never figure out how to use Austin and 5 years later when Austin was done with his rookie deal and left the Rams he was a shell of the guy from college. If Andy Reid had drafted him he may have been a perennial pro bowl player like he made guys like Desean Jackson, Tyreek Hill, and Jeremy Macklin into who were smaller and faster players like Austin is.

If your get a chance you have to see it it's incredible it's called "the u" talks about the college football team that changed the way college is played and the rule changes that came because of them. Old video and may have been mentioned. But West Virginia is not a powerhouse school. Generally we have to try to develop lesser talent, but sometimes... you hit the jackpot guys like Austin, Pat White, Steve Slaton who are often overlooked due to being smaller than most. West Virginia has actually had a few shots at National Championships, but few and far between. I still love em though! Guess the best way to put it is they are a good middle of the pack type team, sometimes better.

WVU isn't a powerhouse school, EPL equivalent would be maybe West Ham, Tottenham, or Southhampton. A similar school, I think you are more familiar with would be Virginia Tech. A major conference school , the type of team that has some big bowl wins, and a pretty good team most years, just not a championship caliber team like the top tier big SEC and Big Ten schools. Historically they have the most wins of any team to never win the championship.

Fun fact about college is that the same number can be on offense and defense. So Tavon was #1. But there could be a guy on defense with the same number.

Tavon was a flanker receiver so he played rb but lined up as a wr sometimes bc he's so fast like Tyreek Hill and Devon Hester

WV doesnt come up a lot, but when Tevon played they had some good teams... But if you want a really good game to watch, check out the WV vs Oklahoima 2008 Fiesta bowl

Know I’m super late on this, but Tavon is one of those guys who were just ahead of his generation when he entered the NFL. There wasn’t really a role for him at the time as he was primarily used as a hybrid back. Tavon was very small at the running back position, thus was expected to play fully at the receiver position in the NFL. That just wasn’t going to work in his case as although he had incredible speed, he didn’t really have the best hands nor did he have a developed route tree to get open against the top defenders. Had Tavon been going into the draft say within the last 5 years, he would likely be one of the premier players as a lot of the college style of play has translated to the NFL. It’s much higher paced, a lot more room for a guy of his size to be used in trick plays, as well as the opportunity to still be in the backfield as a running back. It’s incredibly unfortunate that he didn’t work out in the NFL to the expectations, but he still had a solid 9 year career on a few different teams. He also had to deal a lot with the sh0oting of his college and pro teammate Steadman Bailey who was completely knocked out of contact sports as the shot was to his head, thus making any head injury more fatal. Side note West Virginia has always been a fringe top school. If you’ve ever heard of Pat Mcaffe, you can look into the game that essentially drove him out of WVU sports entirely for over a decade. That season we were on pace to be national champions, but when I say within a 2 week time period it all came crashing down. Our program has never recovered despite the mid 2000’s success we had. Our state is quite poor, there isn’t a ton to do here outside of stuff in nature, so it’s not a premier destination for recruits. We’ve had a few decent years, but have never been able to capture those top spots. Thanks for watching Tavons highlights though, he’s a state treasure, as well as a part of any kid who’s ever taken football seriously. I’d venture to say that there isn’t a former or current player who hasn’t watched this video multiple times!

You guys should react to nfl best play of each superbowl and tavon austin made it to the nfl but never was able to be what was shown in college but he wasnt bad in some seasons Keep up the great content👍
