With a historical Home Run, or a game winner for the pennant or championship, no one would really expect you to give away. It probably could be worth a lot of money. Foul balls are different

The distances involved in the US make a huge difference for fan behavior, in general if you see a fan of the opposing team at your stadium they either are actually from the same town/area as you or they traveled a significant distance in order to watch their team, and in both cases that calms most rivalry feelings fans might have. Fights do happen, though it tends to be considered more a consequence of intoxicated young men than anything specific to do with teams.

SF Giants won in 2010/2012/2014. They were all pretty epic too. Worth going back and looking at the legend of Lincecum in 2010 or the comeback kids in 2012. The epic Bumgarner post season was 2014.

As a Cubs fan, if you're in the bleachers at Wrigley, you're expected to throw back any home run hit by the visiting team. Some fans bring a baseball with them so that if they catch one, they can switch balls and throw back the one they brought. I think a similar trick is advisable anywhere a ball might be particularly valuable.
@DNReacts

I think a big factor in the friendliness of US fan bases is that we don't have relegation. There's no danger that the losing team will get kicked out of the league and go bankrupt, it's just which squad of millionaires get the trophy. Also there usually just aren't a lot of travelling fans due to the distances involved. When my favorite English football team, Hereford, had to travel 5 hours for a game in southwest England, I saw everyone talking about what a long trip that was. Meanwhile I'm further than that from EVERY MLB team -- and I live in the eastern US (Winston Salem, NC). It's much worse if you live in, say, Montana.

Most of the time the Club wants the significant Homerun ball back so the player can put it in his trophy case, or it can go to Cooperstown. But they will usually give you a ball autographed by the player who hit the homerun, and a bat as compensation, some clubs even give the fan money.

In a lot of ballparks, it tradition to throw a home run from the visiting team back onto the field. You might get chirped by an entire stadium of fans for not doing so.
@TheBadgertwo

At Wrigley Field it's a tradition to throw homerun balls from the other team back onto the field, as a White Sox fan my baseball dream is to go to a Sox/Cubs game at Wrigley and throw a Cubs homerun back. So when I attend a crosstown matchup at Wrigley I always grab seats in the bleachers and bring a ball with me in case there is a kid nearby. I can give the kid the real ball and throw the dummy back onto the field. It's hard not to be romantic about Baseball.
@kylek6708

that's a great idea, I'm a sox fan and me and my father go to the most convenient crosstown classic game every year. although I have never got a ball of any sorts, so the second one will go to a kid. got to pull out a sign that says this is my first ball lol.

In some cases a baseball is important to a player. And I'm not just referring to "record" or game winning homers. A rookies' 1st base hit and 1st Homer hold great sentimental value. And because of that nice results often occure. For example....a player gets his FIRST homerun as a "Major leaguer". An usher or someone from the team office will go put to person who has the ball. They will tell him that they want to give the ball back to the player....."sentimental reason". But of course they will give that person another ball or team merchandise or free tickets to another game. And of course a true baseball lover will understand and surrender the ball.

IF you caught a record ball, it would probably go back to the team or player and you would be compensated by the team with game tickets or merch.

Always give the ball to a kid. Kids are the future of the sport and if they're in attendance, fuel that passion. You'll have a story about a foul ball and that kid may have a defining moment in their life.

If there's some monetary value to the ball, it's ok to keep it. Mark McGwire's 70th homerun ball was caught by a fan and the Cardinals offered him a signed bat, ball, and jersey in exchange. The fan asked to meet McGwire as well but apparently that was too much. The fan sold the ball 3 months later for $3 Million dollars.
@johnnydropkicks
@johnnydropkicks 3 ай бұрын
The buyer of that ball was Todd McFarlane: comic book artist/writer, creator of “Spawn,” co-creator of “Venom,” etc…. He also has McGwire’s 69th HR ball, Barry Bonds’ 73rd HR ball, and I believe Sammy Sosa’s 66th HR ball.

99% of home run balls are worthless. Now like you guys were saying some home run balls are worth money, 5K, 10K, 25K, 50K and much more. One sold at auction for 3 Million Dollars. Sometimes when a player wants a home run ball back he will offer the fan in exchange, signed bats, jerseys, balls, pictures, clothing, a chance to meet them, and free tickets. But those balls are worth maybe 5K and only mean something to the player.

I had a situation where there was a foul by down the right field line and the right fielder picked it up and, looked at this young lady who was walking up behind me, while he walked closer to the wall and then he tossed it to me. So I just have it to her thinking you just can't pretty much stare at someone and then toss it to someone else. My personal opinion on catching or getting a ball is I would keep it if it was a home run and most of the time I would give it to a kid when it's a foul ball.

C'mon, Damo. You can't compare a foul ball to a historic home run ball. There's many factors in deciding the value of a ball. Who's the player who pitched it? Or hit it? Was it during batting practice before a game or during a real game? Was it a Spring Training game? Regular season game? Playoff game? World Series game? Was it a historical milestone to a player or team? Did you buy it at the team's merchandise store at the stadium? Online? Trade show? Is it signed by a player or team? Who signed it? Are they Hall of Fame? Did you acquire it from a loved one? Does it give you special feelings or memories?

That kid who wanted to give the man who gave away the ball he caught was amazing and his parents should be proud. It is amazing when adults do it but when kids have the maturity to give the ball to an adult that gave away the one they caught brings a tear to my eye. As for the world series winning homerun and the record setting homerun I say do the right thing and give it to a child. Something like this might keep the game alive with the downturn in attendance.
