Not only is hitting for the cycle rare, getting four hits in a game is considered a quality day for a player in the MLB.

Hitting for the cycle is rare. The last Phillies player to do it was 19 years ago, Marlins - ironically against the Phillies - have never had one. Marlins came in the league in 1993 with the Colorado Rockies. There were a cluster of Perfect Games in the early 2010’s. A cluster of Unassisted Triple Plays (extremely rare) in late 2000’s.

fun fact Trayce Thompson (play #35) of the Dodgers is the younger brother of Klay Thompson. Klay and Trayce have an older brother who also played pro hoops for some years and their dad is the great Mychal Thompson who was part of Magic’s Showtime Lakers during the 80s for a few years and now does broadcast work for the Lakers.

Cycles are rare because triples are fairly rare. The big guys who hit homers tend not to be fleet afoot enough to get triples. Shohei leads the league (or recently did) and he is the exception. Fast guys who hit doubles also get triples, but they tend not to hit a lot of homers. Finally, when you're on cycle watch and need the last hit to complete the cycle, you put pressure on yourself.

Not to mention that you need to hit safely 4 times in a game. The rate at which they strike out these days...

It's probably easier to hit a dinner than to get a triple.
@Rak9-j8h
@Rak9-j8h 9 ай бұрын
@@chrisfromshaolin213 assume you meant dinger, but yeah home runs are about 5-8 more common than triples. In all the non-covid years since 2000, there tends to be around 650-950 triples in a season which makes it so that a triple is likely to happen every 2.5 to 4 games. so they are rare in and of themselves in relation to other baseball plays. But for more context on the cycle, there have been 344 cycles in 238,277 games. which puts it as 0.15% chance to happen in the majors. I'm going to go out on a limb and say that number is decreasing because of the launch angle revolution, parks getting smaller (making triples even harder), 4 hit games becoming more rare, etc.

the best part about 23:16 was that it was his 3rd time getting 5 hits in a game, this game boosting his batting average back up to .400. although he has not been able to maintain a .400 BA, it’s incredibly impressive that he even got that high so late in the season. Luis Arraez is a huge throwback type hitter with his contact first approach

I can't think of an occasion where a batter thought he hit a home run and was robbed. Much more common is when a hitter thinks they've hit a home run and it stays in the park.

I'd love if you guys reacted to the A's reverse boycott games. Its been a really tough season for us, and quite frankly a really rough decade. But for one game, on a random Tuesday, against the other lowest attendance team in the league, we made the Colosseum feel like a playoff atmosphere. We've been dumped on personally as fans by ownership, weve been dumped on by media, we've watched our team get gutted year after year, weve sat in a stadium thats deteriorated around us, we've watched ticket prices skyrocket, we're watching a completely uncompetitive team, weve watched them lie about working to get a stadium in Oakland. Just pure disrespect. But we showed up for our team. I'd really appreciate it

It is about the same in rarity as a no-hitter. Only 343 players out of 20,405 major leaguers have done it. A natural cycle is getting a single, double, triple, and home run in that order. That has only happened 15 times in major league history.

10:18 you guys misunderstood that little fact (though perhaps you figured it out on your own right after). an immaculate inning is when a pitcher strikes out all three batters in the inning with the minimum amount of pitches (9 pitches, 3 strikes per batter). in holderman's case, it was the 4th time in that team's history it had happened, not that he had 4 strikeouts. hope this helps (:

Just a point about "cycles." There are cycles in any order, then there are what are known as "Natural Cycles," where they are hit in increasing order.....single, double, triple, home run. While there have been 343 cycles, there have only been 14 natural cycles. That is even rarer than perfect games.

I want to say how much I appreciate the fact that two Brits can take the time to understand and enjoy baseball, and your videos are entertaining to watch as we see your reactions to our national pastime. But I fear you are missing a lot of the point of being a true baseball fan. It's a long slow game. 162 games. 9 innings (or more) each game. "True" baseball fans (to varying degrees) watch every inning, every pitch. Every boring foul ball. That's why these "Top Plays" are so great to see live. True baseball fans listen to games on the radio. Baseball is an amazingly descriptive game to visualize and there are many outstanding broadcasters giving play by play. I would highly recommend that both of you listen to a full 9 inning game on a radio broadcast to fully appreciate what I mean. What MLB is trying to do is sell people on thinking that the "Top Plays" are the norm and happen ever few minutes.. They are trying to make the game faster and more flashy for the younger generation. That's all cool as long as they keep the integrity of the game. As for being a fan, enjoy the game for what it is. It's a slow leisurely summer game that takes it's sweet time. Sit back with a beer and enjoy it. Then when you see a "Top Play" you will know why it's not the usual thing. Thanks fellas, "Play ball !"

Especially in foul ground where the worst case is it's a strike on the batter. There was aa GREAT bobble play in the 1980 World Series involving Bob Boone and Pete Rose.. Boone bobbles and drops the ball.. Rose lunged and caught it before it hit the ground

What a great video!! Getting that triple is why hitting for the cycle is so rare. You almost need an error or a misplayed ball by the outfielder and then a really fast base runner to get a triple. So much exciting baseball in the first half of the season, but the second half is always better because the stakes are higher as teams jostle for the playoff positions. ♣
