Another thing amazing about the 1 vs 16 upset is that Purdue’s best player is 7’4 (2. 235 m) and was national player of their year. FDU was the shortest team in the whole league, and their tallest player was 6’7 (2.007 m) which makes it even more amazing. A true David vs Goliath story

Except that Purdue chokes in the NCAA tournament. Last year as a 2 to a 15 and the amazing 5-12 matchup against Arkansas Little Rock. And they always have a 7 footer. Haas, Haarms, and Edey. Turns out you need guards to win

Best part of this tourney is everyone has a chance and for most of these kids playing, this is the final time they will play in a competitive atmosphere and level as this. This is the final time these young men will have to play the game they love with the brothers they've formed. Such finality to this tournament and it makes it so much more intense.

Farleigh Dickinson wasn’t even supposed to be in the tournament. They lost their conference championship game but the other team was ineligible to be in the bracket because they just transitioned from Division II to Division I. FDU was even an underdog in their play-in game

In North Carolina, in middle and high school, teachers would postpone "teaching" during the tournament and roll in tv's so everyone (including themselves) could watch and wouldn't miss anything. Everyone, not just us that played basketball, looked forward to it every year.

You should look up pictures of the Purdue stadium and the FDU stadium. This will give you the magnitude of the upset. Purdues stadium can fit over 14,000 people but FDUs can only fit 1,800!

We have a large group who meets at Hooters Restaurant starting at 11:30 am each day until the last game (or as long as we can make it )for the first two rounds. We only avg 8 hours a day this year. I always take at least half a day if not a full day off on first Th and Fr of the tournament. Then we see how bad we are at betting.

Princeton came within a basket of beating the Patrick Ewing Georgetown team back in...I want to say 84/85... that was almost the biggest upset of all time and easily one of the biggest scares of all time, back then 15 and 16 seeds did not come within 30 points if they were lucky... you should review that game, and then also the Villanova 86 (85 season) win... nearly a perfect game shooting to beat Georgetown by a basket... one of the greatest upsets of all time. There is much to be mined in college BBall...

Look out for the Cinderella team. There’s usually one that slips in the tournament and sometimes they do some damage to some really good teams. When this happens I personally think it makes it more exciting. Who doesn’t like a team who’s not really supposed to be in the tournament, end up becoming overachievers. Many colleges have small enrollments while others have truly massive numbers of students attending classes on campus. When I was in college, UCLA won the national championship in 1995 and then next year in the tournament, Princeton shocked the world by beating the defending champs the very next year in the first round. St. Mary's is in Moraga, CA, which is where I grew up. The Gaels actually have a really good program considering they are a tiny school in a town that even a lot of people in the San Francisco Bay Area haven't heard of. In 2010, Matthew Dellavedova, who is still in the NBA now, and the Gaels beat Villanova (who were national champions in 2016 and 2018) to get into the Sweet 16. You mentioned you love three pointers and can't get enough. You should react to: Joseph Vincent- "Chef Steph- Steph Curry". Steph Curry is #1 all time on the NBA three-point list (and the #1 reason why the Warriors are 4 time NBA champions with him.

Best Mascot? Purdue Pete. (There are probably more fun mascots but Pete looks sooo strangely surreal. Walking around with an ax and that weird head...Don't know whether to cheer or be frightened.) And I regret being the jinx for Purdue. I should never have said anything about how you pronounce the school's name. (And just so you know, I was just kidding. I love a good accent. Someday I hope to make a trip to Whales for the full on effect! The tournament brings pride for all of the older alumni (graduates) of these universities. Most of the fans of the games are alumni because they can afford the tickets also. ...My university (Central Florida) did not make the tournament this year, but we have a cool looking mascot. We are called the UCF Knights, and our mascot's name is "Nitro".

A bit of history about the origin of March Madness, the Illinois High School Association coined the term for its state basketball tournament in the late 1930's. The NCAA began using the term probably in the 80's. The IHSA eventually sued and won. The settlement was the IHSA awarded exclusive right to MM for its high school tournament, plus a monetary award from the NCAA. And the NCAA the exclusive right for its national tournament.
