"Since 1975 no other Notre Dame player has been carried off the field...." That was true when this movie came out in 1993, but in 1995 the Notre Dame football team carried another player off the field - fullback Marc Edwards who ran for 82 yards and had 3 touchdowns in a game against USC. Marc Edwards went on to play for various teams in the NFL and was a member of the New England Patriots when they won the Super Bowl in 2002.

For someone who grew up in Indiana, this movie and Hoosiers are the two best sports movies. My favorite thing about this movie is that, you know the game at the end? My mom and dad were at that game. My dad was one semester away from completing his MBA (Master's in Business Administration) and my mom worked in the bookstore. My dad, may he rest in peace, was absolutely certain that the Rudy chant was complete fiction. (My mom had to leave 10 minutes early because the bookstore got swamped after games.) And so help me, to my mind the movie was over when Ned Beatty announced over the loudspeaker "MY SON'S GOING TO NOTRE DAME!" -- I feel like that would have made my dad's _life_ if any of his children went to Notre Dame like he did. Not that he had anything against Nassau Community College and SUNY-New Paltz...

Had the privilege of growing up in northern Indiana. I’ve visited the beautiful campus a number of times and have family and friends that actually studied there. Even though I haven’t been ‘home’ in many years, watching ND on Saturdays gives me a taste. It all makes this great film all the more special to me.

Movie made me a life long Irish fan aka Golden Domer Homer as a kid. Also helped that every game was televised in NY so I could watch them.

I don't know if it was already mentioned in the comments, but Joe Montana played at Notre Dame during the same time.

I'll throw in a shout for reacting to We Are Marshall. Another "Based on a true story" college football movie that (based on the comments from those who were on this Notre Dame team) was a little more based in reality.

Joe Montana was on the quarterback of that Norte Dame team with Rudy.

Hall of Famer and Norte Dame alumnist Joe Montana said the Rudy chant and players giving us jerseys wasn't true, but him getting in the game and getting that sack was actually true.

If you haven't already, you ought to watch _"Friday Night Lights"_ (the movie). Another heart wrenching football movie and true story and probably my favorite

Flutie play3s quarterback. Rudy played either Defensive End or Defensive Tackle

Way, way, WAY, too small for either of those positions. In high school I think he probably played DB, but the one coach at ND said he didn't want Rudy in his defensive backfield. So I'm thinking he was likely listed as a linebacker but was probably more akin to a nickel or dime back in a pass defense formation.

One of the greatest sports films of all time. And I can't believe you didn't recognize Samwise Gamgee from Lord of the Rings.
