I noticed that in the first four, the British riffs made me head bop and foot tap. The American ones were pure headbanging. This was my physical reaction to those 4 riffs. They are equally good. Iron Maiden is my favorite band.
@adamlevine67002 жыл бұрын
British metal tends to be more upbeat, American darker and grittier. I'm no musician, so I cannot pinpoint the musical explanation -- in terms of notes and scales they favor -- but at least from these examples (which admittedly have been cherry picked) there is a clear difference in vibe.

@Kona_chibi3 жыл бұрын
The most noticable thing for me is that british heavy metal tends to be more technical, while american heavy metal is more catchy. British heavy metal bands usually want you to hear a complex guitar riff simply to show off their prowess, while American ones just want you to nod your head and jump around. That being said, there are obviously exceptions. Dream Theater for instance, has an amazing guitarist that truly puts his skill to work in many of their songs.
@stephenwilliford-compositi63953 жыл бұрын
As a composer I'd say it isn't really a difference in the level of technique, but where it's being channeled. British leads are incredibly technical, where american rhythms are incredibly technical. I can absolutely play some of my favorite Maiden lines since I mostly play lead, but I struggle whenever I pick up a Megadeth chart since the chords and progressions require such intense and brutal hand positioning. If you want an example of what I mean there, go check out the charts for Holy Wars or Tornado of Souls, those songs are just tremendously brutal
@Kona_chibi3 жыл бұрын
@@stephenwilliford-compositi6395 With Megadeth that's understandable. Dave Mustaine practically invented thrash metal. I remember watching a video some time last year where he played live with Metallica, and got to choose the song and the pace of the song. No one in Metallica could keep up with him and they ended up struggling through the entire tune while Mustaine just took it all in his stride. He's an incredibly talented guitar player for sure.

Where the British focus more on the flow of the notes, the USA just gives it all the power they've got. (Kind of fitting for other things in this situation, too... Like the military.)
