One could probably say that they are the best at what they are supposed to do, it's a light infantry unit that are specialists in subarctic and arctic environments, but they are not better than other units at doing what they are not supposed to do, those units will have a different purpose and toolbox, and they are not part of the special forces. There is another Ranger battalion in the south, at Life Regiment Hussars in Karlsborg, and there is a pretty decent series about that, 16 episodes I believe, they follow conscripts during their military service, you would probably find that interesting.

@@KingSlothDefinetly look into the Jägarsoldat series. The most professional intimate look inside modern ranger training from first to last day. 17 episodes. As for your standard swedish ranger,They typically specialize in guerilla warfare, recoinnasance, sabotage and denying/delaying/disrupting enemy movement, logistics and utilizing hit and run tactics. At K3 you have the parachute ranger squadron which is SR/special recoinnasance, entering on foot,undercover,HALO/HAHO/Water jumps etc. Expected to operate in small units of 2-8 for 30-50 days in non permissive/enemy territory without support or resupply. Some duties and training similar to British Pathfinder platoon. Duties in long range recon, sabotage, tactical diversion,HUMINT and interrogation. Large engagements primarily handled by others, 31st airborne assault rangers for examaple. Direct action ,hostage rescue and high value target kill/capture bt special forces/SOG. Anyone who has completed 9 months of ranger training can apply to the parachute ranger squadron. Succesful canditates among other things have to complete a 7 day field excercise immediately into being parachuted into extremely difficult terrain to complete a 60-70 kilometer small group navigation test (with further tests at each checkpoint at the end of which you continue on a 10km individual navigation wuth final testing. This is the final test, the golden eagle. Some of those who pass *may* be selected for 6-12 months role specific operator training. All members of the squadron must succesfully complete the golden eagle every year to remain with the Unit.

I once met a young left winger (an anarcho-syndicalist) on a party who told me he had belonged to the mountain rangers in Arvidsjaur in northern Sweden when he did his mandatory service. "You may think I´m an idiot", he said, knowing that I also was some kind of left winger, "but I really enjoyed it". "I understand you perfectly well", I answered. "I wrote a whole book about the history of the anarcho-syndikalist movement in Sweden, but what I´m genuinly more proud of is the fact that I once on a shooting range managed to score 99 out of a 100 possible". "Yes, there you see"", he answered with a smile, "we men are just like that. Completely out of our minds when it comes to weapons and military stuff".

The Ranger Battalion consists of various Ranger units all over Sweden. The Rangers who are specialists in warfare in a mountain environment are the Lapland Ranger, then we have the Parachute Ranger, Coast Rangers those who use the Combat Boat 90. Field Rangers, Norlands Dragonerna, Airport Ranger and Rangers. I belong to the Lapland Ranger and then the Mountain Environment, to fight up in the mountains, mountain climbing. How skilled the Lapland Ranger and our specialty to quickly strike and disappear before the enemy has time to react and we only consist of ordinary conscripts, who had only had time to do 8 months of training which is 15 months long In a winter exercise up in Northern Norway, we were supposed to fight against US Navy Seals. These were professional soldiers and had been there for between 10 and 15 years, the Lapland Rangers beat the US Navy Seals 4 times. Then they refused to meet us anymore. You can see our coat of arms to the left of what I am writing and it is a Wolf, because we are like wolves. Those who are Lapland Ranger are only the best of the best, who can be. @@KingSloth Today, the Lapland Ranger Regiment does not exist. When in 1999 it was believed that Russia did not pose a threat, several regiments, airfields and some marine units were disbanded. Conscripts were replaced with professional soldiers, which meant that 15,500 people did their military service to a minimum of only 1,500 as conscripts. Then this slowly turned upwards after Russia's first war against Ukraine. Since 2022, everything has increased and disbanded regiments are reopened. The Lapland Ranger Regiment is today called: LaplandsRangergroup. However, a new regiment will be built in Kiruna and the Lapland Ranger Regiment will be re-established, what is delaying is the lack of officers. This is because the Swedish government is investing in military equipment only and not salaries, which means that officers are leaving when they get better pay and conditions in the civilian sector. As you may know, the US will place its military equipment in 11 locations in Sweden, including Kiruna. Before the name Lapland Ranger Regiment, it was called the Army's Jaeger School (JS) was a jaeger unit within the Swedish Army that operated from 1945 to 1975. The unit's command was located in the Kiruna garrison in Kiruna. History The Army's Jaeger School has its origins in the ski-running battalion that was set up on 5 October 1910 in the Boden garrison, as the Norrbotten Regiment's IV. battalion. In 1943, the battalion adopted the name Norrbotten Regiment's Jaeger Battalion in Kiruna (I 19 K).[2] On 1 July 1945, the battalion was separated from the Norrbotten Regiment (I 19) and formed the Army's Jaeger School (AJS). However, it had a common commander with the Kiruna Defense Area (Fo 66).[3] On 1 February 1946, the school's designation was adjusted to JS. In 1951, the government proposed to the Riksdag a limitation of the army's peace organization, which, among other things, meant that the Army's Hunter School (JS) should be relocated. Behind the proposal was the 1949 defense inquiry, which suggested that the hunter school should be relocated to the Boden garrison, to become part of the Norrbotten regiment there. The head of the army supported the proposal and at the same time believed that the training conditions were better in Boden compared to Kiruna. For this reason, the army chief considered it desirable to conduct hunter training in eastern Norrbotten, as Kiruna lacked the typical Norrland forest terrain. Furthermore, the army chief believed that the location of the hunter school was based on the strategic location during the Second World War, when there was a demand and need for training in mountain terrain. The army chief also believed that the Kiruna establishment did not correspond to the desired increased conscription quota for training in free hunter activities. The Army Chief proposed that the Jaeger School be located in the establishment that became vacant in Boden, in connection with the merger of the Norrbotten Artillery Corps (A 5) with the Boden Artillery Regiment (A 8). It was further proposed that the Jaeger School adopt the name of the Norrbotten Regiment's Jaeger Battalion. No date for relocation was proposed in the bill, but instead a date for relocation would be determined at a later date, when the conditions for relocation were met.[5] No further proposal for relocation was made, but instead the government proposed to the Riksdag in 1954 that the Defence Area Commander be relieved of his command of the Jaeger School. Instead, the Chief of the Jaeger School would be the Major who was the Chief of the Jaeger School's training unit.[6] In 1955, the school's staff was separated from the Defence Area's and thus had its own chief.[4] A move of the Jaeger School was again proposed at the 1955 Riksdag, when the army chief suggested that training for combat and reconnaissance should be coordinated as far as possible within the army's Jaeger units. The training of the distribution Jaeger companies for southern and central Sweden was proposed to be located at the Life Regiment's Hussars (K 3) in the Skövde garrison. The training of the Jaeger squadrons, intended for Jaeger companies and the independent Jaeger units in northern Sweden, was proposed to be located at a Jaeger center in the Umeå garrison. It was thus proposed that the Jaeger School be relocated to Umeå, however, a move to Umeå was dependent on new accommodation facilities being provided for the infantry in Umeå. As a result, neither the government nor the Riksdag took any position on the issue of a move of the Jaeger School, but instead the issue was postponed until the issue of the army's accommodation facilities was resolved.[7] In connection with the OLLI reform, which was implemented in the defense in the years 1973-1975, A-units and B-units were formed. The A-units were regiments that were given responsibility for a defense area, and with that became a defense area regiment. The defense area regiment was also given mobilization and material responsibility within the defense area, and the B-units responded only as a training unit. In the Royal Maj. Gen. Bill 1974: The Commander-in-Chief considered that there should continue to be a defence area staff in Kiruna, with the aim of leading subordinate units in the manner that applies to mobile staffs at this level. He therefore proposed a merger of the Army's Jaeger School and the Defence Area Staff. Through the Commander-in-Chief's proposal, the Chief of the Army proposed that the Army's Jaeger School, after integration with the staff for the Kiruna Defence Area (Fo 66), should be named the Lappland Jaeger Regiment (I 22). On 1 July 1975, the defence area regiment, the Lappland Jaeger Regiment (I 22/Fo 66), was formed. This meant that the Lappland Jaeger Regiment became an A unit, and was given the overall mobilisation and material responsibility as the sole unit within the Kiruna Defence Area.

@@KingSloth The task of the Lapland Rangers was to strike quickly behind the enemy line and then disappear before the enemy could react to what had happened. A Ranger shot the first vehicle with anti-tank rounds, another Ranger did the same with the last vehicle. The rest were then shot quickly. It should only take a maximum of 30 seconds to disappear. Is one of the tasks.
