British Patriotic Song: Land of Hope and Glory

"Land of Hope and Glory" is a British patriotic song, with music by Edward Elgar and lyrics by A. C. Benson, written in 1901.
The music to which the words of the refrain "Land of Hope and Glory", are set is the "trio" theme from Edward Elgar's Pomp and Circumstance March No. 1. The words were fitted to the melody on the suggestion of King Edward VII who told Elgar he thought the melody would make a great song. When Elgar was requested to write a work for the King's coronation, he worked the suggestion into his Coronation Ode, for which he used words provided by the poet and essayist A. C. Benson. The last section of the Ode uses the march's melody.
In the United States, Canada and the Philippines, the instrumental version of this song is traditionally associated with high school and university graduation ceremonies.

I remember speaking to a Sri Lankan Tamil a little while ago about Ceylon and the British Empire as well as the civil war that followed. One comment he made that stuck was the fact that unlike the French and German empires which broke down the countries they ruled and left very little behind, the British Empire spent a lot of time modernising and connecting the land, and once independence was gained in 1948, still provided support and trade as part of the Commonwealth. Yes we caused a lot of travesty and damage, but we also left behind a lot that kept these countries going to build their own economies. It's an interesting way to look at things. Certainly wasn't a comment I expected to hear.
