British Patriotic Song: Rule, Britannia!

"Rule, Britannia!" is a British patriotic song, originating from the poem "Rule, Britannia" by James Thomson and set to music by Thomas Arne in 1740. It is strongly associated with the Royal Navy, but also used by the British Army. It is one of the most popular patriotic British hymns, and some consider it as a 2nd National Anthem for the United Kingdom.

I concur. I’m a law student in the USA, and I can tell you without the mighty English, the world as we know it wouldn’t exist. Not just a random power grab - they literally shaped the world forever for the better. The entire system of laws and Nearly Every single one of our individual laws here in the US is passed down from the British. The system of jurisprudence with judges passing down precedence and making decisions with the fabled “common law” is a distinctly English tradition. It’s how we have things like state decisis and precedence, the backbone of the legal structure. We all know that 1st degree murder needs, criminal mind (malice aforethought), criminal act (the taking of the other person’s life) and premeditation and deliberation. But how did we get that? English judges through decades and centuries decided that this was made a murder a murder and the common, good people of England ratified that by supporting those decisions. These became the very elements of murder and have been passed down from generation to generation. We all know what a breach of a contract is, but where did that idea of law come from, and even the system of formalized contracts which help our economy and commerce grow and prosper? It came from the British and was instituted by the good men and women and passed to us today. Heck, in my contracts law case that I read last night, one of the judges was writing the unanimous opinion of the court, and he wrote, “my fellow lords, we must uphold the concept of good faith in contract law, or certainly render the free flow of commerce, which our very nation depends upon, to collapse.” The way they talk is funny, but the things they did are incredible. Going to law school expanded my appreciation for the mighty British and am very proud to call them our great friend on the international stage today. I see it as the relationship between a mother and a daughter. It may be our turn to shine and be “the belle of the ball,” but none of this would have been possible without the mother who came beforehand. Glad to see our relationship is strong. And am very thankful for all the good the British have done for society. From worldwide commerce and the stock exchange which is the foundation for nearly all of our jobs to the very rule of law which we citizens depend on, it’s all the British. It goes way deeper than one might think. To end this comment on a high note, what language are we all commenting in and is the “worldwide language” (generally accepted for business and relations)? English.
