I realize people have differing opinions on these particular men, the political parties at that moment in time, and politics in general, but I for one find the discourse on display here to be a good example of how serious, erudite, and respectful political figures WERE, and how distorted, cynical, and mean-spirited political life is NOW. And yes, I know all about Thorpe, but murderous intent is a permanent feature of human life in society (not that it's excusable); I just don't think that undermines the point I'm trying to make.

I think their presentation is better in the ways you outline. However, the fundamental rot within the system was and is still there. Around Thorpe were Heath, Cyril Smith and Clement Freud. Their predatory behaviour only revealed after they died. The system breeds, protects and exists on deviance. How many others were never found out and how many still lurk?

They are good at getting their view across. That's all. The rest is just an illusion. It's only because people have access to 24 hour news sources today that scandals are bought to the public's attention much quicker. If these politicians governed in todays age the UK would be in an a permanent state of scandal & corruption. These politicians were far more corrupt than UK politicians today, it was just easier to get away with and cover up.

I remember the Thorpe trial very well, when discussing it in the pub we used to refer to his lover as 'Scott of the Arse-antics'.....happy days, long since gone!!
