A film taken at Paddington one Saturday early afternoon showing the varied traction at work in & out of the station. Featured are Network SouthEast class 101, 117 & 121 DMUs along with class 47 loco hauled stock while Inter-City services were in the hands of class 47s and HSTs with their original Valenta engines screaming away! If you liked the video please subscribe to my channel, there are lots more transport & quirky vids to upload!

Another superb video. Network South East, Inter City Swallow livery, Royal Mail, blue large logo all there. Great model railway inspiration.

Some of them ended up on the Waterloo-Exeter's as well when they got really short of locos, the trouble was only the 50's & 47/7's had long range fuel tanks so any other 47's used had to be refuelled part way through a loco diagram. I will upload some vids of them on the Exeter's in time.

Yes, the 47s were used all over the place! It only took one coming off perhaps Crewe Works and sitting on Crewe Deiesel depot being nabbed by control as the only loco spare in the area. So instead of being worked back to NSE it would go the other way! That was the joy of a fair amount of depot's signing 47s......

It must have been a very interesting day...I'm only up to 8.03 and as well as the standard 2+8 HSTs, I've seen that weird 2+6 with only three standard class coaches right at the start, and now a full set with the buffet car the wrong way round...

Another great video, love the sound of the 47s powering out of the station. Was not aware of there being large logo 47s with small black cab side numbers, 47830 at 56 secs. Bit unusual. I do remember the Intercity livery 47s with the very small numbers cab side and v low down bit frustrating when speeding by. As per 47??? at 2 minutes into video. Perhaps the same size as used on HST power cars. Naughty 47458 at 3 min 55 with it's tail lights showing presumably bringing in empty coaching stock. All the coaches are first class. Any ideas what service it was? The The only other observation query is the formation of the HST at 8 min 30. A TGS at both ends and two buffet coaches. Again any idea what service this was?

Hi, no i'm afraid i have no idea what services the weird stuff was on. It was filmed in the rush hour, i know there was weird loco hauled workings eg-Padd to Twyford, and HSTs on commuter trains to say Oxford. If they were short of stock i imagine Old Oak would cobble together anything that was serviceable and put it out on the shortest possible diagram/s so that all first class train would have some coaches de-classified rather than be an all first class train.

47831 Bolton Wanderer was the IC Mainline with small numbers on lower bodysides. Same livery as carried by 47/4s based at Crewe and then Stored (IXXS) at Bristol Bath Road. 47832 Tamar was so painted as well. Class 47/8s were converted and later repainted resulting in 47830 carrying this mismatch until 1993 some time. 47822 once carried these colours as did 47852 until it was accidentally run into the turntable pit at Old Oak on 11/10/1991 and the loco was written off and dumped there: Cannibalised for spares. The Mk2D formation en-suite with Mk1 RBR (behind 47458 in / 47813 out) was the OO (Old Oak HSTD) HST Substitute rake formed of seven vehicles most of which were never rebranded with INTERCITY (Swallow) branding as they still had compartments in them and were due for retirement. Replaced in May 1992 with a ten-strong Mk2 rake of all-First Open 'aircons' plus two BFOs. The second rake (behind 47432 in / 47831 out) looked like an Intercity Cross Country set up atypical of this time. Used to think most ICXC services before the 7 x Mk2 'aircon' rakes were standardized upon looked as if they had been thrown together! On a separate note: Does anyone remember the massive rake of Mk2 'aircons' which were used by Network SouthEast on NWRA services from Padd between Feb and Oct 1992? All in IC unbranded colours except for FK 13575 which was the only such carriage repainted into NSE colours? Looking for information or footage of this rake in use with NSE and all assistance will be greatly appreciated! :o)

Unusual HST formation at 8:21. Don't think I've ever seen a 9 coach train before, especially with a 'guard's/luggage' coach at each end and two buffet cars? Was this a train with some added coaches bound for Old Oak for repair/service?
@limeyfox

Unless I’m much mistaken, the first of the two catering vehicles is a TRUK, i.e. restaurant seating and kitchen but no buffet counter. The second is a regular TRFB restaurant/buffet first. There weren’t many TRUKs left in service by 1991, perhaps it’s the set for the down Golden Hind, the mid-evening Pullman express for Plymouth and Penzance. Probably a coincidence that the set is also conveying an extra TGS, probably being transferred from Old Oak Common to Laira via service train. This is very likely the case as 1991 is when the East Coast sets were being redistributed elsewhere (due to IC225 squadron service) and there was a lot of stock to move around the country.
@keef71
@keef71 2 жыл бұрын
There was a similar set on the Eastern Region for the Tees-Tyne Pullman, which had 1 or 2 less Second class and more First class, along with the extra TRFK.

I'm guessing a large part of it was declassified, Old Oak was probably short of stock and scraped together this random set for a peak hour working.

If i remember correctly the early ones went to the Chiltern lines although i do have film of proper DMUs on the Chilterns along with a couple of class 47 hauled trains. The DMUs went first on the GW and the loco hauled were replaced by the 166s but late 92 or into 93, i did a 3 day Network Rover to bash the loco hauled trains, a lot of ex RFD locos were in use at the end along with the NSE liveried ones, happy days!

Oh I thought the first gen DMU's lasted longer than the loco hauled sets which last ran from Paddington to Oxford on 3rd July 1992.

I've just checked my video records and i have a few shots of class 117 DMUs at Reading but without looking at the film i don't know if they were on Padds or heading west on Didcot/Oford/Banbury workings. I'm sure the NSE loco hauled finished in 1992, most workings had gone by early summer but a couple of diagrams held on for a bit longer. By then i was chasing locos out of Waterloo for haulage & filming as that's where the action was around London at the time. I did a mornings filming at Acton Main Line in May 94 and i have some Turbo shots but no proper DMUs. Like most things on BR it took time for the whole fleet to enter service and any teething troubles would have meant the old DMUs carrying on, i seem to recall mixed unit formations towards the end as good carriages were paired up and unfit ones withdrawn. Hard to believe all this was 25 years ago now!

Soi Buakhao The early turbos I believe were on the Chiltern route initially. The first ones 165001-002 I believe were built sometime in 1990. It seemed quite gradual though that they were all introduced. When the new approach for Paddington was complete, loco hauled stock was apparently not allowed no more and a lot of the 3 car chiltern turbos went to the Thames side of the division as the 165/1s and the 166s were delayed in being built. Once sufficient units were procured the units went back to Chiltern and gradually had tripcocks fitted as per requirement for LU although not originally a thing. There was an instance where 47s went along the Met line in service ! As far as I know 165001-007 I believe stayed with Thames Trains until the early 2000s when they returned to Chiltern. I would love to see the video of 47s on the chiltern route if you have it I believe they ran on the services via Risborough on peak hours to Aylesbury.

Thanks for the answer. I do have film of the Chiltern line 1991 and it was DMUs with a couple of loco hauled trains but i seem to recall an odd Turbo on test. There were still DMUs on the Western when i did a 3 day Network Rover in 1992, i was chasing the last loco hauled workings to Oxford & Newbury.

@SoiBuakhaoRoutemasterbus
@SoiBuakhaoRoutemasterbus 2 жыл бұрын
It used to be the Royal Mail loading platform and the public weren't allowed but by 1991 it was no longer in use for this purpose. It was used as an access route to the car parking area behind where i was standing plus Ranleigh Bridge (the old loco servicing point) which was also a car park, so standing there to film was no problem.....
