Lovely video Soi with those lovely old CEP's. It's funny, I still think of 1996 as 'modern day' despite being 25 years ago!

Great footage! It reminded me of my visit to The Wherry Lines in East Anglia in September 2019, to film the final Class 37's in regular passenger operation, to see the semaphore signals, the manual opening and closing of crossing gates, and a staffed signal box, before they disappeared. It made me feel quite sad really.

Love the stumble with the gates seven minutes in! There'd be a 10k enquiry into something like that now! Those were good and happy days

Great film. Captures the rural feel of the line and the area . My sister lived for a few years at Nettlested. I used the station at Yalding a few times.

I was there later on this day, no semaphores but caught a Crompton on a ballast working......

The 4CEP (Class 411) was probably one of the more comfortable Southern units (before the advent of the Class 442 out of Waterloo). My many overnight sailings from Dover, to bash CC72000s and pairs of BB67400s on the Calais - Amiens portions, always used to start with the 21.00 ex-Charing Cross. This was always a 4CEP and a 4VEP (Class 423). I always chose to sit in the 4CEP with its better padded seating and its smoother ride.

Most of older stock was a whole lot more comfortable than 80s built stock, and as for the stock built these days, might as well sit on the floor!

@@SoiBuakhaoRoutemasterbus I agree. Straight-backed seats, with no padding, no leg room, and rarely lines up with the windows ! Now we have longitudinal seating, that really jars your back. I know the Class 306 had some such seats, but the Class 710s are awful.

I was at Waterinbury a couple of weeks ago. That signal box certainly has loads of character.

Fantastic video complete with 4 CEP EMUs (and their traction motor noise), semaphore signals & manually operated crossing gates. Only thing that some may miss is the lack of any sparks from the conductor shoes, perhaps filming on a wet day would have fixed that !!

There's probably little semaphore signalling left anywhere now.

There's still a fair amount around, Cornwall, parts of Scotland, the Welsh Marches line, Angelsey, Cumbrian Coast, Carlisle to Newcastle to name a few. Even Greenford in west London still has semaphores and a box!

1) I can't stand how the fenestration on those CIGs(?) was :PFFT: 'modernized'! 2) I never ever got to look at any manual level crossing around GB.
@Keithbarber

Perhaps "modernized" may be the wrong word - but they looked like they had been thoroughly refurbished at some stage
@trainrover

artifice of modernization is, really, more about snuffing out character or independance, ça fonction-çi...
