Jennifer Nettles has said many times this song had nothing to do with her personal life..that being said she has a great voice..
@Melly01

It's hard not to react to the real emotion in her eyes and just want to hug her. As others have said, she was going through a real life divorce at the time she recorded the video. This was not her specific real life experience, though, she just channeled the emotion in her performance. *EDIT* She was inspired by Reba McEntire's song, "Whoever's In New England," which was from the perspective of the wife being cheated on. *END EDIT* Jennifer realized - much as you did - that she'd never heard a song from the other woman's perspective, sat down and wrote it pretty quickly. IMO, it's a tremendously sad song that shows how everyone is hurt in a deceitful relationship, but it also shows the positive of her getting back on her feet and telling him to just stay with his wife since he can't give her what she needs. Sometimes good people make bad decisions. It shows a path out of a terrible situation, but also shows that it's not necessarily an easy one. Just do it anyway.

That song and especially the video hits you right in the feels. I love the raw emotion by Jennifer and how she’s hurting, begs him to stay with her, but develops strength as the song progresses until she tells him to stay away. This topic may be uncomfortable for some but Country tells it like it is and if there’s any emotion that you’re dealing with, this genre will bottle those feelings up and make music that will hopefully help you. Great songs along the lines of this one, about infidelity, realizing your mistakes, or even getting the courage to break free from a damaging relationship are All These Years by Sawyer Brown; Promises, Reasons I Cheat, and Hard Rock Bottom of Your Heart by Randy Travis; It’s Your Call by Reba McEntire; and You Were Mine by the Dixie Chicks. Man, I’d love for you to react to those songs!!! Thank you, we appreciate what you’re doing and for taking our requests!

NOT AUTOBIOGRAPHICAL She is NOT the "other woman" She is NOT the "wife" It is just a very well-written STORY Sung from the heart❣ "STAY" .....Is a gut-wrenching story-song about infidelity and betrayal, written from the POV of The Other Woman. (NOT AUTOBIOGRAPHICAL, Nettles insists.) Nettles: "When I was writing the song, it felt good, but I didn't really analyze it. However, when I was done with it, and I was sitting back and playing it back, I thought, OK, this has something. I thought it was really special. It had a wonderful moment of redemption and it was a twist on a classic story. It was fresh and new. Now, that wasn't the intent when I started writing it. The intent was, hey, I want to express another side rather than rehashing the same old thing, and see how that feels emotionally." "I feel very grateful that I have never had to be or ever chosen to be or accidentally found myself to be in the space of the other woman. But I think we can all relate to the concept of being in a place in our life that isn't the healthiest for us and having to make a hard decision that isn't easy, even if it's the best decision for us, and having to experience a loss that comes from making that healthy decision." "I think it's true to the human condition of understanding and loss, but also to the rawness and vulnerability of being fallible. We make mistakes that not only hurt ourselves, but hurt other people. We many times sell ourselves short, not only in relationships but throughout our own lives. Hopefully, we come around at some point and realize our own value. Being able to have that moment in the song where she comes around and says this is very very painful but I am worth more than this -- I think everybody has either experienced that moment or craved that moment." "This is such an emotional song. It's all about being able to hear those lyrics and being able to understand them so that you can get the impact of the whole song." "This is a crazy, emotional, dramatic song about a dramatic story in a person's life."
