For san diego , depending how they market the team to the local community, they absolutely could sell out the 35k. One of the reasons why mls hasn't done anything in SD before is because most of the latin population all support Tijuana Xolos. But there are alot of people in SD and Chula Vista that can be reached!

For New York City FC's stadium, yes. There was a bit of negotiating with the community required to get the stadium built. The two main hangups were about sharing parking with the New York Mets stadium and getting a police precinct built for the community. Technically the stadium isn't fully approved yet, but it's 99% likely it will be. It's in the final stages of approval.

So background info on where they are building the new NYCFC Stadium: That area across the street from Citi Field used to be all auto body shops and an over all industrial neighborhood. The City of New York opted to put that space to better use and there are rumors of a casino also going in there. -A Native New Yorker, NYCFC Fan and just a nerd for stadiums

Don Garber, the commissioner of the league, has always wanted smaller stadiums that are easier to fill up. MLS teams used to play in cavernous stadiums for other sports where 15,000 fans look like an empty stadium. The standard when these stadiums started was usually around 18,000 except in a couple of markets that went bigger. By the pandemic, all of the new stadiums were between 20-25k with notable exceptions like Atlanta United. I hope they will increase some at least to 30k by the time they are built, especially Miami and NyCfc.

When MLS says soccer specific, they don't mean soccer only. For example, Atlanta United play in the same stadium as the falcons, but the stadium was designed for both sports and can be easily arranged for soccer. Snap Dragon was built for all of these sports, and the University was hoping to have an MLS team come to San Diego to play there.

A few things brothers. Soccer specific refers to the size of the field, accommodating a proper size of at least 120x75 with square-ish corners so you can properly set up for a corner kick. I’m sure there’s videos of Beckham trying to take corners at Giant Stadium with his back on the wall taking 1 step into the kick. For New York, the project is what it is because it already sits on Corona Park “across the street” (which is several tracks for trains and the subway and a street, to be fair) and next to Citi Field (Mets) and the Billie Jean Tennis Center (US Open grounds) so there’s really a whole lot of nothing for ‘livable’ space there without crossing the park or the bay to the east. The area being used for the stadium was called the Iron Triangle… basically a bunch of car service garages set up in metal shanties. If you saw it in its heyday, it’d look seedy and dangerous. That’s been almost entirely abandoned and leveled already. Miami, by contrast, is occupying the space of a closed golf course, so they’re returning some green space to be publicly available.

The NY stadium is being built literally abut Citi Field, home of the Mets. You can see the scoreboard in the video to see just how close it is. Also the tennis US Open complex is within walking distance, Arthur Ashe Stadium being the main court.

It has been a long battle for NYCFC to get their own stadium especially since they always wanted it to be in the city and city bureaucracy. But that area of Willets Point needed to be re-done. Currently when you go out there on one side you have Citi Field for the Mets but then it had a bunch of auto shops next to it and just wasn't the best of areas. Across the way to the south is the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center (home of the US Open) so in the summer time, the area is already a hub for sports. It doesn't mention adding a park or anything because technically there is one there already.... just google map the area and you will see on the other side of the Tennis complex is Flushing Meadows Corona Park, home of former World's Fair and next to that is Botanical Gardens. The NYCFC stadium will now occupy where the auto shops were next to Citi Field, you can see Citi Field in the diagrams shown it just wasn't labeled so literally just a road dividing the two stadiums. It's pretty accessible being there, the 7 subway line and the LIRR (Long Island Rail Road) trains have stations between the two sports complexes already, LaGuardia airport is a "stones throw" away, and two of the major bridges nearby bringing people from downstate area and Bronx right into that region of Queens. It was much easier for Red Bull to set up shop years ago in New Jersey and avoid all the city politics with their stadium, but then they also didn't live up to their plans they had given and for yearssss it was an empty wasteland around the stadium until officials came knocking and were like umm you had so many years to do this and this and nothing is done so the area around it now was rushed.

Great stuff, lads. MLS Commissionar Don Garber wants smaller stadiums on purpose. Around 25,000 capacity, for the new ones being built. I live in Miami, so its moving along. Miami Freedom Park is being constructed on what used to be a public golf course. They are going to make the place a huge athletics complex. It consists of "The soccer village" (public soccer fields and other soccer related businesses and restaurants). The baseball fields and Waterpark, are being integrated as well as other restaurants, shopping and a huge tech hub. It sounds like it's gonna be a pretty awesome area. Thank heavens it's almost all privately funded. As far as, "what i would change?" Im not sure. I think they've got the right idea.

I live in Portland & have been to Providence Park to see the Thorns play (NWSL team). 1 thing I think they could do there is round the corners to where the hospital building begins on both sides to give it a more enclosed feel & get more butts in the seats. The stadium's now in the middle tier when it comes to attendance & a few thousand more people would help the team's bottom line & make the environment even louder than it already is.

Soccer specific doesn't mean nothing else happens in the stadium; just that it is built for soccer to be played there. There must be dedicated facilities etc.. Quite a lot of soccer stadiums in the US double as concert venues which is why the horseshoe 3 sided stadiums with a giant screen dominating the 4th side is so prevalent.

You saw in this video that America has it's own Pro Rugby competition, Snapdragon Stadium is massive by our Rugby standards, the only Rugby Specific stadium in the league (used to have two Infinity Park in Glendale Colorado was the other, but the now American Raptors withdrew a few years ago) SaberCats Stadium in Houston only has about 4,500 capacity and the other stadiums rage from 3,000 to 10,00 with the league itself averaging about 1,000

I'd have thought a rugby-specific stadium would be around 10-15,000. Thinking of Exeter Chiefs with about 11,000. You want as many people as possible, but you then need to be realistic. MLR won't have found its level yet, as rugby is still under the radar.

To add to the talk about soccer specific stadiums; I think there is a lot of confusion around what that means. I've watched MLS since the very first day it kicked off. For years the issue was playing in stadiums that were far too large and that they had to pay rent for. Lamar Hunt built the old Crew Stadium and suddenly the team went from bleeding money to at least coming close to breaking even. That was where the idea of soccer specific stadiums came up. It was a way to move from expensive rental agreements into a situation where the team was able to keep most of the revenue. The odd man out for most of that were the New England Revolution. Their owner also ran the NFL stadium they play in so they were almost always close to breaking even. When the Seattle Sounders came in was around the time that it switched from "soccer specific stadium" to "stadium that the owners control the revenue". It is why Charlotte plays at an NFL stadium and Atlanta plays at one as well. Their owners (and hence the team) get the gameday revenues and thus get to make money off hosting the games. If it can fit a proper field and won't try to take a team for all they've got then MLS is fine with teams not playing in custom seat stadiums.

I swore I wasn't going to comment on NYCFC's stadium, but I can't help myself but only because I want to clear up a couple of things that you commented on right in a row at about 6:48. 1. While, yes, it is very difficult to get that much open area in New York where there isn't any already, Flushing Meadows Corona Park is already right across the railroad tracks from Citi Field and this new stadium. It is home to a large amount of open space, the Queens Zoo, The Queens Museum, and the USTA National Tennis Center which hosts the US Open. 2. This is also all a stones throw away from LaGuardia Airport which used to have interrupt play at the old Shea Stadium all the time until they finally adjusted the flight traffic patterns on game days.

Just for reference a few MLS teams regularly get 35k. Some get 50k+. MLS is the 7th most attended league in the world. The newer clubs go with 25k because they prefer having a full stadium than a partly empty one. It makes the atmosphere better, looks better on TV. It also helps them artificially jack up prices if seating is limited and there is greater demand.

Toronto FC will be expanding their stadium for the 2026 World Cup. Going from 30,000 to 45,700. The stadium has been steadily expanding over the years since the team started, it started at about 21,000. TFC have had some bad seasons, but they managed to get around 25,00o in average attendance. I wonder if the place will echo, although Canada's national team has been doing well so might fill the place.

MLS pushes for soccer specific stadiums, but with San Diego FC it’s not a massive stadium, plus it’s brand new so few minor changes needed. Team like Atlanta United average attendance per game is 47,000/ 71,000 total capacity. So it’s not too big for it. Atlanta United rank top in world’s soccer average attendance out of all soccer leagues. But another team like Seattle sounders I could see them building like 35,000 seat stadium down the road at there brand new practice facility. It’s been brought up already. Overall MLS stadiums are growing by at least 5-10,000 for capacity.

San Diego is right on the border with Mexico, so there are a lot of soccer fans there… But how this team came into existence is certainly not doing it any favors. About 65% of the entire city has hated this team since day one with the way of the city was manipulated by MLS to get this team. The stadium actually was built for soccer, but made in a way where it can also host American football, rugby, and baseball.

So when it comes to New York City, there’s almost no space to build things. Essentially the only way to build is up. If you want to clear land to build something like a stadium… You’re going to have to make it worth it. New York City is currently experiencing a housing crisis so as part of the deal to clear some land of some old decrepit buildings for their stadium. They also agreed to build 2500 affordable housing units, which will basically be a giant skyscraper of apartments for low income families. The city has also been trying to build another school because they view that their current ones aren’t big enough for the number of students so that was also included. to make it more vibrant they’ve also added retail/shopping centers and 40,000 ft.² of land like a community park. It’s not so much the team giving back, which I’m sure that they are happy to do, but it’s more these are things that they had to do in order to get approval to build in the first place.

The dopey expression "soccer-specific" is really meant to imply "The futbol team is the prime tenant." Heck, Paul Rabil of the Premier Lacrosse League famously said that the size of the pitch in his sport being in the same range as MLS, playing in an MLS park was like a non-reinvention of the wheel. At many universities, the soccer and lacrosse fields are the same patch of ground. If MLRugby ever takes off big, it too would fit in the "soccer-specific" ground.
