Best short version I've ever heard is "Jordan traded friendships for championships." It really humanizes him to see that it still bothers him but he's made his peace with it.

People often talk about Michael Jordan's baseball stint like he was terrible. It's true that he wasn't great... but to go from not having played baseball since high school and straight into double A professional baseball and actually do *okay*? That is an incredible accomplishment. Double A is serious professional baseball. What Jordan did is pretty remarkable. It would be like not having played soccer since you were 16 years old and being thrown into League One at 32 years old and actually competing at a decent level.

Michael had to get away from basketball 🏀 but Jerry Reinsdorf owned the White Sox and he signed Michael to the White Sox and it was the best therapy for him. People picked on him because he wasn’t a perfect baseball player but he didn’t do too badly. The media was ruthless trying to eat him alive. So sad, but he came back and they started winning again. Scottie began resenting Michael’s competitiveness.

I don't know how much of the drama between Jerry and Phil was publicly known but if it was public that Krause said Phil wasn't coming back even if they went 82-0, a year after Scottie made it very clear he felt betrayed, I think it's pretty fair for the press to call it as they see it to Krause. he's allowed to get upset about it but he was actively backstabbing the team because he didn't feel like he got enough credit.

It did feel like he had the little man syndrome as someone mentioned in the Doc. Thanks for the comment

Usually if a player retires under contract, they will just freeze it and if that player unretires, it resumes. Similar to most entertainment contracts. Also this is the episode that caused a rift between mike and Scottie... Scottie has been very hateful since this episode came out because he didn't like that his selfish behavior was brought up since that season had nothing to do with Mike himself. As of now, Scotties ex wife is dating Michael Jordan's son so it's been a crazy turn for the batman and robin of basketball.

It's crazy that he wouldn't expect it to come up since he's part of the documentary. He was interviewed and straight out said that he would've behaved the same way. I remember Stephen A. Smith said that Pippen looked bad but due to his own words, not anyone else's. His own teammates, especially Steve Kerr, even tried to claim that he's not the type of player that would just quit.

Bobby bonilla played for the Mets but hasnt played since 2001 but the Mets still pay him 1.19 Mill every july and those will continue until 2035

Yea, but that's not a common arrangement. When guys retire, usually the contract freezes and that's it. The Bobby Bonilla contract was a very specific agreement to alleviate cap space (and they thought they were going to get profits from their investments with Bernie Madoff. So much for that lol). It was much more beneficial for the Mets to defer the contract so that he was paid $1M every year until the agreed total ran out. He's not the only player in the league who has this sort of set up. Ken Griffey Jr., for instance, has a similar agreement with the Reds and his last payment with the Reds will come next year. The key difference that this agreement was made while he was still playing to defer his payment until later and be spread out over the course of like 25 years or so.

@@Allsizes I wasn't refuting your comment or trying to start an argument. Don't get defensive. I was just trying to add context to the Bobby Bonilla story. That's all. Peace!

I was a hardcore, Air Jordan-wearing, teenage Houston Rockets fan and like the rest of the country, we were devastated when Michael announced his retirement. It was my senior year in high school and I can tell you that the atmosphere in the school gym felt like we were all victimized when MJ lost his father in such a tragic manner. 1) We truly thought the game would not be the same without him. 2) We felt that the Houston Rockets were on their way to being real contenders [they were], but… 3) without Michael Jordan it was somewhat of Pyrrhic victory. In fact, to this day fans put a mental asterisk next to the Rockets’ 94-95 championships because it wasn’t against the best basketball player in the world.

I don't know anyone who puts a mental asterisk on the Rockets titles. That's ridiculous and Jordan would the best first to say so, knowing very intimately how hard it is to win. Can't take anything away from those Rockets teams.

If someone retires, they still have to pay any money that is guaranteed, any money that's not...they pay nothing. It's no different than a player that is traded or released. That is why people try to get guaranteed money in their contract.

Currently, Jerry Reinsdorf is the most hated man in Chicago. He has utterly destroyed the White Sox and Bulls with his old man arrogance. He does not know how to run teams in the modern era. And he's uninterested in winning championships.
