Jonathan Groff portrays King George, amazing how someone who spends about 10 minutes total on stage can steal the show the way he does, considering the massively talented cast.

I think the King George songs are so well placed to bring in the comic relief after the heavier/more serious moments. Keeps the audience on their toes.

100% agree!

The references to Washington looming large or being tall are historically accurate in that he was, of course, powerful and well known, but he was also famously tall at 6’ 2” or 1.88 meters.

This is honestly probably my favorite King George song 😭 The shade is genius. Great reaction as always! :)

Welcome back! We missed you! ❤ As usual, a couple historical facts: King George III famously did try to "yield his power and step away," but the rest of his court convinced him to continue on as king. Therefore, it makes sense that he didn't know someone could get away with doing that. As someone else in the comments mentioned, George Washington made everyone look small not only because of his commanding presence, but also his physical height, clocking in at 187cm (~6'2"). However, John Adams was famously not at all tall in comparison, at 170cm (5'7"). Even his official portrait made him look short, because the painter left a ton of space above Adams' head. People then and now make fun of Adams' height, which is funny considering that the shortest president in U.S. history would come just two presidents later. James Madison, who is mentioned several times in this play, would become the 4th president, standing in at 163cm (5'4").

Thank you! That's super interesting, based on how King George III is represented here, I never would've thought that he would have attempted to step away like that!

Glad you are back!! The costume is an exact replicate of one of the King's outfits. It is the only outfit that was exact. ❤

That's some great info, thanks! I wonder why this is the only one they made exact? (Great one to choose though!)

I know this is an older video, but I don't think anyone's mentioned it yet. The character that comes up to tell him John Adams is the next president is actually a subtle clue of King George's further descent into madness. That actress's character is sometimes called "the bullet," because after her death as a background character early in the play, she's only seen a couple more times, either related to an imminent character death or as the one holding the slow-motion bullet that kills Alexander Hamilton. I'm not sure how clear it is in the film, but if you pay close attention, it was also her job to subtly always be watching Alexander throughout the play. The actress said that was one of the hardest parts of the role, that she was supposed to never lose track of Lin in the shuffle. So her character is not a real person & is a personification of Death.

We didn't forget you! So glad to have you back on the horse. I wanna mention again that I would love for you to schedule a couple of lives (act 1/act2) out far enough where we could come watch you react all the way through. I'd watch the whole thing, even if I couldn't make it to the lives.

This is definitely something that I'll look at doing once we're done with the individual reacts! I'll need to see how best to do this while also not getting ruined by the copyright holder!

5:40 - it definitely made things more uncertain in American history because at that time, Presidents did not have term limits. George Washington was a reluctant president in the first place. So when he retired, it kind of blindsided the nation. But it also set an important, unofficial precedent where Presidents did not run for more than 2 terms. FDR was the first, who was elected to 4, but died within months of his 4th term. The Constitution was amended to include term limits in 1951.

George Washington was a very tall man, for that period in time, 6'3" and he was a national hero and legend before he became president. John Adams was 5'6, just around average for the time, but absolutely puny looking next to Washington. John Adams was instrumental in drafting and the ratification of the Declaration of Independence, and the Constitution, served ambassador to the UK, France, and to what is now the Netherlands, and was Vice Pres, to Washington, But, he was "anticharismatic" (as Hamilton would call him later). He was fantastic at crafting a case or policy, but he was also widely disliked. He and Jefferson were initially bitter rivals, but later reconciled and corresponded with each other for the last 14 years of their lives. They died on the same day.

It's been fun rewatching Hamilton again and my Spotify is going to reflect that 😂. Also, have to give props to Adams because coming after Washington... yikes.
