It is a legal requirement. It USED TO not be, but in 1951 the 22nd amendment limited presidents to serving only 2 terms. (There are some exceptions for things like people taking over for a deceased president, but yeah it's generally 2 4-year terms max)
@palpablenotion
@palpablenotion Жыл бұрын
The maximum is 10 years, if you take over any sooner than halfway through, you're considered serving a term instead of finishing someone else's. The actual wording might give days or something, it might be 23 months and not matching or exceeding 23. But that's the idea. Ford could have served two terms elected but not the guy who took over for... shoot, the president who died 30-90 days in? Technically at the time there weren't term limits, as the 22nd was passed after FDR finished his 4th term, but following FDR, that guy would have only been able to run and win once.

I think it’s technically one day shy of 10 years that is the longest possible now. Something like if they’ve served less than half of a term. I should just look it up but I’m feeling lazy.

Just adding in here I was the one who mentioned it in a prior video. That after Washington’s example, no one served more than two terms until FDR, but it wasn’t a requirement at the time to limit to two terms. After FDR they amended it. It is now a legal requirement with caveats. I didn’t want to get into the caveats in the initial post. 😅

@@firegaze21 yea, that's what I was pretty sure of, its something like if the newly sworn president finishes a term of no more than 1 year, 11 months, and one day less than a complete month, being sworn in no sooner than January 21st of the year 2 years before the following terms organization, or, on those years that January 20th of the following term's inauguration falls on a Sunday, no sooner than January 22nd, then that president is deemed to not have served a full term and is eligible to be twice reelected. That seems like the language the law makers would choose.

It's also noteworthy that they didn't declare vice-presidents at this time, that whomever was second was made VP.

A bit of a musical in-joke, this one. The last line of Hamilton's "response" before it just devolves into obscenity -- "Sit down, John" -- is the first big musical number of "1776," a musical about the events leading up to the signing of the Declaration of Independence. John Adams is very much the hero of *that* musical. The movie of that musical was also, back in the '70s, a very popular thing for substitute teachers to show children in elementary school when they didn't have a good American history lesson prepared. Consequently, I imagine that many Gen Xers reading this comment are already singing to themselves "Won't somebody OOOOpen up a window!"

I was in high school in the 90s and teachers were still showing 1776 in school- by then we had the TV show Boy Meets World- so we were all like Mr. Feeny!

@@jcdvt1 Good to know it stuck around a while! They used to show it on my local TV station on the 4th of July as well, so I have some happy memories of watching it as a kid before going off to see fireworks. In retrospect, it was probably a lifesaver as a distraction for parents who got tired of over-eager children asking if it was time for fireworks yet? No? How 'bout now? Now? It looks dark now, so is it time yet? Now?

Hahaha!! Yes, I loved hearing the reference to 1776. Love that musical, too

Thank you. I thanked you before for your eerie timing because you posted the breathing exercise on a day when I was having trouble dealing with my father's passing. I can't handle a long complex break down or song atm, but you posting this was perfect timing. My dad's cat, at 21 years old, passed 2-3 hours ago after my mother and I sitting up almost all night, sitting vigil as we held him and prepared. Your videos are calming and comforting. Thank you.

@@XavierRechs Thank you! I'm trying. Self care is hard. I'm so glad you're back, btw. You introduced me to reaction videos - I knew about them but didn't get why anyone would watch them. It's because it feels like we're experiencing this media together, there's a camaraderie to be found.

To answer your question: Before Franklin Roosevelt, it was courtesy to stop running after 2 terms in deference to Washington stepping down. However, FDR continued to run (and win) and became the only president to serve 4 terms. In 1951, the 22nd Amendment forbid presidents to run after 2 terms. I don't really have much to say on this song either, so here's a fun fact! John Adams was the first president to live in the White House!

Actually that's not what they think they "know." That's the truth but not what they saw. His affair was nothing as what they thought they knew was actually a form of treason. The term speculation used has a double meaning, but we don't use it in the second meaning often anymore.

You can only run for two consecutive terms, but you can serve more than that- just not run and be elected to more than two consecutive terms.
@ChristopherBrunk
@ChristopherBrunk Жыл бұрын
This isn't completely accurate, the restrictions in the 22nd amendment do not just apply to consecutive terms, but ANY 2 terms. For example, if candidates A and B were to alternate election wins for 4 terms (ex: A wins 2020, B wins 2024, A wins 2028, B wins 2032), they would then both be ineligible after those 16 total years (neither A or B could run in 2036). The only exception would be if one were the VP and succeeded to the presidency after the death of the President. (Ex: if A were elected VP in 2016 and took office as president in 2018 after serving as VP for half the term, A could effectively serve 2 and a half terms - inherited 2018-2021 term, elected 2021-2025, and 2029-2033.) If an inherited term is longer than 2 years, it counts as a full term and they become ineligible to run for a 2nd elected term. EDIT: Correction on rules for inherited terms.
